Is it just me or does this month feel a bit underwhelming? The weather has been less than ideal with the mix of freezing rain, snow, rain and melting snow. Our family tried to build a snowman a few days back and it lasted less than 24 hours before loosing eye balls, it’s mouth and loosing weight around it’s middle. Not to mention the snow was filled with dirt and goose poop, old snow never looks as pretty as the fresh stuff. With less than wonderful snow conditions it can make it a bit tricky to figure out what activities to do or what trails to hit up. Here are my recommended tips for this month of funky weather.

  1. Hit up the Ski Resorts, Mission Ridge and Stevens Pass. The resorts have the ability to make snow so if need be, use the groomed runs and have some fun.
  2. Fat bike riding is still doable on certain trails in Squilchuck and Leavenworth, although depending on snow melt this may not be the best bet, so watch the conditions.
  3. Head to higher elevations to chase the snow for snowshoeing and skiing (also being aware of the avalanche conditions when heading into the backcountry).
  4. Nordic skiing is still doable at Lake Wenatchee and some areas of Leavenworth. If you are a big Nordic skier and are looking for more options, check the conditions for the Methow Valley as they will likely have snow longer than us on the Valley floor.
  5. When in doubt, hit the dirt roads and pavement for some outdoor fun. Rock Island Grade would be doable on a bike, the loop trail for some running and walking, the Waterville Plateau, the Stemilt Creek Loop for bike riding, the road ride from Wenatchee to Leavenworth. These are all options with this kind of weather, just bundle up and watch for freezing rain.

For some indoor time during the funky weather, take a look at your gear. Which gear needs repair? I have a sewing machine that I use for gear repair and for crafting utilitarian style home projects like cushion covers, or curtains etc. Speaking of repairing gear, our team member Andy Dappen will be hosting a Fix and Maintain Your Outdoor Gear event coming up at Pybus University on Tuesday January 23rd along with some of our team members who will have sewing machines ready to go to help you get your gear in tip top shape.
