SUMMARY:Exploring the Southern Ocean: Two Months in Antarctica & the Sub-Antarctic
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee Valley Erratics Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute will meet at 7:00 P.M.\, Tuesday\, October 9 at the Wenatchee Valley Museum\, 127 South Mission\, Wenatchee. \n“Exploring the Southern Ocean: Two Months in Antarctica and the Sub-Antarctic” \nDr. John Buchanan\, Prof. of Geology\, EWU\, takes us to unfamiliar territory with stunning photographs from trips to the Southern Ocean. From Ushuaia\, Argentina\, we go to the Falkland Islands\, South Georgia\, the Shetland Islands\, and finally to the land of ice\, the Antarctic Peninsula. \nThe Scotia Sea plate\, at the northern edge of the Southern Ocean at its boundary with the South Atlantic Ocean\, opened in the last 1% of geologic time. Cold ocean currents now pass through the Drake Passage that connects the southwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean and the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean. This sets in motion the circumpolar current\, isolating much of the area from the warmer north\, and sustains a highly productive fishery. Geological highlights include plate tectonic evolution of the area\, similarity of rocks in the Falklands to those in South Africa\, spectacular rocks and glacial landforms on South Georgia\, and intrusive igneous/sedimentary/volcanic rocks on the Antarctic Peninsula. \nThe program is free & open to the public. \nFor overviews of the Ice Age Floods and more information on the Ice Age Floods Institute\, please see our website: http://www.iafi.org; http://www.hugefloods.com; and quadricopter videos of Ice Age features\, http://www.brucebjornstad.com.
