DESCRIPTION:the North American rainforest caribou to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge \nIn WRI’s Red Barn on Wednesday\, January 25th\, wildlife expert\, author\, photographer\, and tracker David Moskowitz shares from his book Caribou Rainforest: From Heartbreak to Hope. In a North American rainforest that few people know exists\, about a dozen dwindling herds of mountain caribou are struggling to survive –in the US herd\, fewer than twenty of these shy animals remain. \nThis iconic ungulate\, identified as an “umbrella species” by conservationists (protecting their habitat contributes to the preservation of a variety of species sharing the same delicate ecosystem) are some of the last of the great caribou herds that once roamed throughout the northern US. Moskowitz’ book provides examples of shifting challenges and tactics for wildlife and mountain caribou conservation in the twenty-first century. While the topics are at times wrenching and even contentious\, Moskowitz tells us that opportunities to engage effective solutions still exist. In Caribou Rainforest\, the author searches for lessons that can turn despair into hope and stories that can become the inspiration for committed change. \nThe author of three books\, David Moskowitz has contributed his technical expertise focusing on tracking and other non-invasive methods to study wildlife ecology\, to a wide variety of regional studies\, as well as in the Canadian and US Rocky Mountains.
