DESCRIPTION:NCW EcoChallenge\, May 6 – 19. \nRegistration opens 4/9. \nThe NCW EcoChallenge is a community-wide competition for Chelan and Douglas county residents. Participants challenge themselves to try new\, environmentally-friendly behaviors for two weeks. You choose the behaviors you want to commit to doing (from dozens of options) and report your progress online daily. In addition to learning how to reduce your carbon footprint\, you have a chance to win valuable individual prizes and cash for the nonprofit agency of your choice! \nThe EcoChallenge is a Northwest Earth Institute program that is facilitated by Sustainable Wenatchee. Sponsors include Chelan County PUD\, Link Transit\, and Waste Management.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 16\, 2019 Sunday\, May 19\, 2019\n\nBarn Beach Reserve | 347 Division St. Leavenworth\n\nLeavenworth Spring Bird Fest\, May 16-19\, is based in Leavenworth-WA and takes place in various locations throughout the Wenatchee Valley -from eastern coulees to Blewett Pass. Celebrate the return of migratory birds in the midst of peak wildflower season while enjoying events\, activities\, and festival trips. There is sure to be something for all ages and abilities at the Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest. Bird enthusiasts\, as well as nature lovers and outdoor recreationalists\, can bird and sightsee by river raft\, on foot\, bike\, and by ear\, while guided by regional birders and scientists. \nLeavenworth Spring Bird Fest provides educational\, recreational\, and artistic activities promoting the awareness of environmental and conservation issues unique to the area’s birds\, wildlife\, landscapes\, and communities. This event follows on the heels of World Migratory Bird Day and includes a multicultural aspect linked to Latin American countries. The heart of the festival is to have fun through bird education for families\, visitors\, and those who call the Wenatchee Valley home. Important scientific birding data will be gathered during the festival. \nFestival Spotlights: \nKeynote Address by Richard Crossley\, internationally acclaimed birder\, photographer\, and award-winning author of The Crossley ID Guide series\, Friday\, May 17\, 7pm at the Icicle Creek Center for the Arts’ Snowy Owl Theater. Crossley will present “There and Back” recounting his experiences while working on The Crossley ID Guide: Waterfowl\, telling us what compelled him to drive to the Arctic Ocean\, northern Alaska – from his home in Cape May\, NJ. Told in a thick Yorkshire accent\, with a sense of humor and a disdain for being PC\, you will hear about the incredible places he traveled and the inspiring people he met there and back. \nBirds of the West: An Artist’s Guide with Molly Hashimoto\, May 17 from 1:00–3:00pm at the Wenatchee River Institute’s River Haus. Come for a short slide presentation about Molly’s experiences with birds and how they have inspired her art. Participate in a fun hands-on art session where you will learn about some of the techniques Molly shares in her new book\, including block prints\, sketching on toned paper\, etching\, and more. Book signing following until 4pm. \nBirding and Bikes -Leavenworth\, Sunday May 19\, 8:00-11:00am. Bring your binoculars and be sure to wear high visibility clothing\, helmets are required. Join Don and Ann Schaechtel for a leisurely 9-mile bike tour in the Leavenworth Valley to visit great birding destinations. Most riding will be on paved roads and suitable for most types of bicycles. Meet at the Wenatchee River Institute\, Bird Fest Central. \nThere is so much going on over four days! Writing workshop. Songbird concert. Birders barbeque. Birding by ear. Songbird ecology.
