SUMMARY:Introduction to Ornithology with W.R.I.
DESCRIPTION:A note from the WenOut Staff: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, please contact the organization hosting the event or check their website or Facebook page to verify if the event is continuing to take place. Thank you. \nIntroduction to Ornithology Class with Wenatchee River Institute \nLeavenworth— Are you interested in birds? Would like to learn about the science behind them? Ever wanted the opportunity to set up a mist net? This two half-day Introduction to Ornithology class will immerse you in everything birds\, anatomy to their social value\, and communication to field study. Fri.\, April 17\, 10am-2pm and Sat. April 18\, 6am-10am at Wenatchee River Institute (WRI)\, 347 Division St. in Leavenworth. \n“There’s so much more to birds than the little critters that we love to see in our yards\,” explains Suzanne Tomassi\, Visiting Researcher at University of Sheffield. “For example\, their bills: some can drill holes into trees\, some are serrated for catching fish\, some are specialized to collect nectar from a single species of flower\, some are extravagant to aid in mate attraction.” \nThe first day of the class\, April 17th 10am-2pm\, will be all about the basics of bird biology: evolutionary history\, anatomy and physiology\, social value of birds\, behavioral ecology (breeding\, migration\, molt)\, and field methods for studying birds. While Suzanne touches on all these subjects\, she likes the audience to drive the specifics of the class. Interrupt at any time so that all of your questions get addressed! \nOn day two\, April 18th 6am-10am\, we’ll meet outside to set up some mist nets! With a little luck\, we’ll catch some birds and see for ourselves the things we discussed in class the previous day. Participants will be able to observe handling and measuring techniques and learn how to set up and take down the nets. \n“The science of ornithology provides endless opportunities to further understanding of the natural world\,” says Suzanne. “My greatest interest lies in the distribution of birds’ energetic resources.” \n2-day class cost is $60 for WRI-Members and $70 non-members. Food and lodging is not included. Please dress appropriate for the weather\, bring snacks and water. Limit of 15 participants so please\, register soon!\nQuestions?
