SUMMARY:Firewise Communities Chipping Event
DESCRIPTION:This event is for all residents of Chelan County including those who live in the middle of town. \nThis service is FREE for residents of Chelan County \nAllowed: Tree and limbs up to 8″ diameter trimmings and brush \nNot Allowed: Noxious weeds\, sod\, animal waste\, garbage\, plastic bags\, root balls\, pine needles\, or leaves \nStacking Piles for Chipping \n-When stacking debris\, please place all the stems and tress and brush pointing the same direction with the cut ends toward the road. This makes the pile easier to pull apart to feed the chipper. \n-Max pile height is 5 feet. \n-Individual cut pieces must not be thicker than 8″ in diameter. \n-Stack similar sized items together in piles. Please pile items by hand. \n-Debris should not be blocking any traffic. \n-Chipping will occur in mid to late October. \nPlease track your hours preparing for the chipping crew. Proof of landowner contribution is required for this program. Record your time raking\, pruning\, thinning trees\, and other activities to make your home better prepared for wildfire. \nRegister here. \nFor questions or additional information contact Amanda Newell with Cascadia Conservation District at (509) 436-1601 or amandan@cascadiacd.org

SUMMARY:Living with Volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest Online
DESCRIPTION:North Cascades Institute Presents- \nFire and Brimstone: Living with Volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest Online \nWhat distinguishes the Pacific Northwest from other regions in the United States? Hint: it’s an explosive geological feature. That’s right – our many active volcanoes! From Mt. Baker and Glacier Peak in the north to Mts. Rainier\, Adams and St. Helens\, these iconic glacier-clad peaks of the Cascade Range are part of a 800 mile-long chain of volcanoes\, according to the USGS\, extending from northern California to southern British Columbia. \n\n\n\n“The volcanoes are the result of the slow slide of dense oceanic crust as it sinks beneath North America (subduction)\, which releases water and melts overlying rock\,” the geological agency explains. “Cascade volcanoes have erupted in the recent past and will erupt again.”Join science educator Gina Roberti for an interactive online presentation which will provide you the tools to observe and understand volcanic processes. Become acquainted with the volcanoes in our region and why we have so much volcanic activity concentrated in this part of the world. You’ll also gain awareness of volcanic hazards to serve as an informed community member. \nIn this virtual program\, we’ll use satellite images and aerial photography to make observations of the major stratovolcanoes of the Cascades range. You’ll learn how to observe evidence of past eruptive processes in the rock record on your next hike or drive over a mountain pass. We will also discuss how the science of volcano monitoring and hazards mitigation has shifted with modern technologies and become familiar with the international collaboration of government agencies. Finally\, we will discuss how we as communities can live safely with volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest. \nYour registration includes a 45-minute interactive comprehensive volcano presentation; dynamic exploration using Google Earth of regional volcanoes; discussion of local community and global scientific responses to volcano activity; and time for Q&A and discussion. \nPrepare to have the top blown off your curiosity in this red-hot program!
