SUMMARY:Great Gray Owl: A Visual Natural History Online
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by North Cascades Institute \nTwo Part Owl Series \nClass Cost: $5 \nNorth Cascades Institute is excited to partner with Skagit Audubon Society to welcome award-winning author and photographer Paul Bannick for a two-part series on owls. We hope you’ll join us as Paul shares an intimate look into the life histories of two of North America’s most charismatic birds\, the Great Gray Owl and the Snowy Owl! \nFor both presentations\, Paul will combine his breathtaking images\, first-hand accounts\, video\, sound\, and science to help inspire conservation and education efforts as well as to help spread awareness about the threats facing these owls and what we can do to protect them. You will also be given a chance to ask Paul all of your burning owl questions after his presentation. \nPaul is proud to have recently published two new books: Great Gray Owl: A Visual Natural History and Snowy Owl: A Visual Natural History. Both books feature several dozens of never-before-published images\, some of which capture behaviors rarely witnessed and perhaps never photographed. The photos work with first-hand field accounts\, which are illuminated by our most up-to-date understanding of these species. You can order copies of the books signed by Paul here!

SUMMARY:Becoming a Conscious Consumer
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by NCW Libraries & Sustainable Wenatchee\n\nDid you know that the things we buy can impact our personal health as well as the environment\, society\, and the economy?\nJoin us for Becoming a Conscious Consumer: The high cost of cheap stuff and how to be a better buyer to learn more.\n\nSustainable Wenatchee Executive Director\, Jana Fischback will help us identify ways to make more responsible purchases. Jana will cover the ethical problem of all the cheap stuff that we buy\, including global environmental and societal implications. Now\, that can get a little depressing\, so then we’ll talk about solutions!\n\nFirst\, Jana will share ideas for how to buy less. And then\, she will teach us how to buy smarter in four main categories: clothes\, groceries\, everyday household goods\, and electronics. She will also briefly touch on the issues of personal health\, greenwashing\, and advocating for manufacturers to take responsibility for the environmental cost of their products.\n\nSustainable Wenatchee is a nonprofit that promotes a culture of environmental stewardship and social sustainability in the Wenatchee valley. Jana is a Wenatchee native and earned her Master’s in Environmental Studies from Evergreen State College. She worked as a Sustainability Coordinator on the west side before returning to the valley in 2016. She co-founded Sustainable Wenatchee a year later. She is passionate about showing how social justice and economic sustainability are both intricately tied to environmental issues.\n\nAll NCW Libraries’ virtual events are free and open to the public. Events will be held through the Zoom digital meeting platform. To participate\, register. Registrants will receive an email with the Zoom meeting information. During this event\, attendees hear from the presenter and then have an opportunity to submit questions to the presenter to answer live.\n\nFor more information click here.
