SUMMARY:Birding by the River
DESCRIPTION:Go birding with knowledgeable WRI staff around the WRI campus! All birding skill levels are welcome. Need binoculars? We have loaner binoculars that you can borrow. \nThis is a great opportunity to learn about eBird\, the largest biodiversity-related community science project in the world\, and utilize it to record our observations of local wild birds. Total walking distance is ½ mile\, over a gravel path with two moderate hills. Come prepared for the weather. These walks will happen on the second Wednesday of each month for the whole year. Join us for as many as you can! \nTrail difficulty level: beginner\nTrail is wide enough for ADA access\, but trails are gravel\nBathrooms available at the start and end of the walk \nMeet outside the River Haus at 8am and plan to be finished by 9:30am. Howell\n\n\n\nCLASS TUITION: $10.00\n\nWith three decades of experience as a wildlife biologist and 25 years as a published writer\, Betsy L. Howell lives at the intersection of conservation and communication. She began work in Pacific Northwest forests in the mid-1980s and worked as a wildlife biologist through the tumultuous years before and after the adoption of the 1994 Northwest Forest Plan. During this time she found her voice as a writer sharing stories about working as a woman in wildland firefighting\, profiling passionate peers\, and bringing to light local species and their conservation challenges. \nBetsy has worked with northern spotted owls\, marbled murrelets\, Roosevelt elk\, and a variety of amphibians and reptiles. She currently serves as a wildlife biologist on the Olympic National Forest surveying for Pacific martens\, Van Dykes salamanders\, and Pacific Northwest bat species and writing from her home on the Olympic Peninsula. \nIn this virtual program\, we will hear stories of Betsy’s career including excerpts from her forthcoming book Wild Forest Home: Stories of Conservation in the Pacific Northwest and learn about her creative process as a writer. \n  \nEvent Link
