SUMMARY:Native Plants and Vegetation Zones of the Olympic Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee Valley Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society will be hosting the distinguished speaker of the Olympic Peninsula Chapter on Monday\, October 6th from 7-8pm at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center. \nNative Plants and Vegetation Zones of the Olympic Peninsula  \nWashington’s Olympic Peninsula is home to a number of endemic species as well as a large variety of native plant communities that live on the Peninsula’s sea shore\, forest\, prairie\, wetland\, rain forest\, subalpine and alpine habitats. We will see how factors like aspect\, elevation\, soil\, moisture\, and temperature shape each vegetation zone of the northwest corner of our state and gain an appreciation for the variety of native plant species that live in this diverse area. \nAbout the speaker:Dr. Fayla Schwartz earned her Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Washington with a specialty in plant taxonomy. She taught biology and botany at Everett Community College until retiring to the Olympic Peninsula in 2017. She is the Chair of the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society and can be found frequently on the trails with WNPS as well as in the classroom with her springtime native plant taxonomy students.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED- Red Barn Event- Enchantments: What Comes Next?
DESCRIPTION:This event has been POSTPONED\, future date TBD.  \nWenatchee River Institute presents this hybrid Enchantment event\, will be offered in person and livestream via YouTube Channel. \nStreaming link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmaKfMFofyc&list=PLjATQxBXvvgXSiC_qr24e5jmPS-LyJ5T9&index=34 \nNo registration required\, but RSVP to receive email reminders and updates about this event! \nDoors open at 6:30pm for a community social with beer and wine available for purchase. The presentation will start at 7:00pm. \nAfter a summer of overcrowding and understaffing in The Enchantments\, the issue of day use management has reached an inflection point. Will this offseason present an opportunity to make changes along the Icicle Creek corridor\, and if so\, what will they entail? Hear from Seattle Times outdoors reporter Gregory Scruggs\, who covered the issue closely this summer and traveled to Colorado to learn how another mountain town grappled with a similar challenge\, along with Mat Lyons\, Executive Director of TREAD\, who has been working with Chelan County stakeholders on a proposal for alternative transportation options to Enchantments trailheads\, and Sarah Shaffer\, Executive Director of Wenatchee Outdoors\, who will share insights on the on-the-ground work with over 40 volunteers in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service\, packing out pounds of trash from the Enchantments Wilderness area. \nAbout the presenters:\nGregory Scruggs (he/him) is the outdoors reporter at The Seattle Times\, where he writes about the intersection of recreation\, land management and the outdoor industry in Washington. His coverage takes him deep into the Cascades and out on the Salish Sea. In 2022\, he won the President’s Award in the newspaper category from the Outdoor Writers Association of America. \nMat Lyons (he/him) is the Executive Director of TREAD\, a nonprofit that collaborate with all partners to drive sustainable outdoor recreation initiatives in North Central Washington. \nSarah Shaffer (she/her) is the Executive Director of Wenatchee Outdoors\, a nonprofit focused on engaging volunteers and the community in stewardship and recreation in North Central Washington. \nEvent Link to RSVP
