SUMMARY:We Are Community-Findings From the PCT Trail
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Series presents Richard Brinkman on the Pacific Crest Trail and community May 2 The 2018-2019 WVC Speaks Lecture Series presents “We Are Community: Finding Gemeinschaft in a Gesellschaft World\,” by WVC faculty Richard Brinkman. \nBrinkman will be presenting a second time for the lecture series his research findings from traveling the Pacific Crest Trail. Brinkman first presented about his journey in 2016. The lecture is Thursday\, May 2 at 2 p.m. in Wenatchi Hall room 2105 and room 901 in Omak\, via ITV. It is free and open to the public. \nThe Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a 2\,650 mile footpath that runs from Mexico to Canada. A notoriously up and down route\, the PCT passes four national monuments\, six national parks\, five state parks\, 25 national forests and 48 federal wilderness areas. Brinkman—who hiked the PCT from April through September\, 2015—explored not only the incredible majesty of the trail\, but a subculture of those who attempt to hike the entire length of the trail. He studied the long-distance hiking subculture as a participant observer and conducted interviews with fellow thru-hikers along the length of the trail. His journey took 150 days. \nBrinkman is collaborating with Marshall University sociology professor Dr. Kristi Fondren\, who pioneered the first of such studies on the Appalachian Trail (AT)\, the PCT’s sister trail on the Atlantic coast and one of three long trails in the United States. The two have presented two papers on the subject at Rural Sociological Society annual meetings. A few of the focal points of the research include the very strong emotional bonds that develop among long-distance hikers\, how ‘trail names’ affect personal identity\, and how our society and world could learn from the long-distance hiking subculture. \nRichard Brinkman is a sociology professor at WVC and has taught sociology at the college or university level since 1992. Prior to teaching full-time at WVC\, Brinkman served the cities of Aberdeen\, Wenatchee and Leavenworth\, the latter as a city administrator. Both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in sociology from the University of Oregon and Iowa State University respectively\, and he served in the United States Peace Corps from 1990-92 in Central America. Brinkman has served many years with charitable organizations including The United Way and Red Cross\, and performed comedy magic for many years benefitting such causes. In 2015\, he was awarded a sabbatical from Wenatchee Valley College to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and conduct research on the long-distance hiking subculture. \nDaily parking passes on the Wenatchee campus cost $2. Parking permit machines are available in the Wells Hall/Music and Art Center\, Smith Gym\, Brown Library and Sexton Hall lots. Students must have valid WVC parking permits.

We should be back to our cars in Leavenworth by 7:45. \nRSVPs required. This trip is limited to 14 participants. Participants will be emailed with more information before the trip. DESCRIPTION:Sleepy Hollow Riverside Ramble \n\nView PDF \n\n\n\nDate\nMon\, 05/13/2019\n\n\nTime\n5:30-7:00 pm\n\n\nLocation\nLower Sleepy Hollow Preserve\n\n\n\nSign up online here!\n\nGive your mother the gift of an evening spent in nature. One of our newest protected properties\, Sleepy Hollow Preserve contains almost 40 acres of land along the lower Wenatchee. On this outing\, we will explore what makes this place so special and important to protect. This takes place the day after Mother’s Day\, so we will be including Mother’s Day-themed activities on this outing. \nWhile the route itself is flat\, the ground is rocky and uneven\, so good footwear and physical ability are required. We will be visiting during flood season\, so there is a chance that access will be limited\, and it will be a good idea to bring rubber boots and clothes you don’t mind getting wet in order to cross shallow side channels. We will cancel this outing in the event of a major flood. \nThough public access will be available in the future\, the only way to access this property now is on a guided Land Trust outing. We expect this to fill quick – don’t miss out! \nThis event is open to members only. Not a member? Become one today! (Not sure? Email hillary@cdlandtrust.org to ask about the status of your membership.) \nRSVP required. More information will be emailed to participants prior to the trip. Sign up online here. SUMMARY:Experiencing Birds of the West through Artistry
DESCRIPTION:When: Friday May 17th from 1-3pm \nWhere: Wenatchee River Institute’s River Haus \nExperiencing birds of the west through the eyes of an artist\, with Molly Hashimoto \n“When creating art about birds\, it brings me closer to them –art extends the experience. With birds\, I actively learn more about them\, I read about them and I study my own art\,” explains award-winning artist Molly Hashimoto. Hashimoto wants to meet her subjects halfway when she paints\, and feels that taking a photo is too quick an experience. With her art\, she devotes time to her natural muses\, giving them her full attention; Hashimoto wants to share this experience with others. \nThe publication date for Hashimoto’s book Birds of the West: An Artist’s Guide\, is May 1st.  While creating art for this book\, Seattle resident Hashimoto sought inspiration in settings both urban and wild\, exploring parks and wildlife refuges all over the West. In the book\, she captures nearly 100 Western bird species using different media\, from sketches with pen and ink to vivid block prints. \n“Each medium has a unique way of revealing different avian qualities—those delicate feathers and eggs or a direct and imposing eye\, an elegant curve of a bill or the brilliant colors of plumage\,” tells Hashimoto. \nHashimoto’s artistic pursuits began when she was a young child\, but she did not start with birds. However as time progressed\, she noticed that birds accompany us daily in backyards and neighborhoods\, with their songs\, bright colors\, and energetic activity. As she began to paint birds\, she became what she describes as an avid bird watcher. Hashimoto is always delighted to uncover in her art details she hadn’t consciously noticed before. \nOn Friday\, May 17\, 1-3pm in Wenatchee River Institute’s River Haus\, Molly Hashimoto is offering a fun hands-on art session as a part of the Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest (May 16-19). In this class\, you will learn about some of the techniques she shares in her new book\, including block prints\, sketching on toned paper\, etching\, and more. Included with the session will be a slide presentation about Hashimoto’s many experiences with birds and how they have inspired her art. Afterward\, from 3-4pm and open to the public\, Hashimoto will be available for questions and book signing. \nFor more than twenty-five years\, her work has appeared in cards\, books\, and calendars. She is the author of Colors of the West. Her subjects include mountain peaks\, forests\, ferns\, wildflowers\, coastal headlands and estuaries. Hashimoto is dedicated to connecting people to nature through hands-on art experiences and for many months each year\, can be found offering workshops to aspiring artists of all ages in Seattle\, the North Cascades Institute\, Yellowstone Forever Institute\, Wenatchee River Institute\, and Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. \nSaid Hashimoto\, “Even people who don’t consider themselves birders seek them out. From urban wetlands to wilderness trails\, we follow the sound of a distant twitter or song.” The range of her art and precise detail encourages all of us -whether artists or not- to observe our feathered friends more closely. \nFor more information about Hashimoto’s Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest workshop\, please visit\, www.leavenworthspringbirdfest.com or call Wenatchee River Inst.\, (509)548-0181 x2 \nwww.mollyhashimoto.com\, Birds of the West: An Artist’s Guide published by Pomegranate Communications\, Inc.
