The presentation will start at 7:00pm. \nJoin the Lake Chelan Research Institute to hear geological\, environmental\, and human stories from the Lake Chelan Watershed\, while learning about potential threats to the lake’s ecology and opportunities to restore and steward the lake into the future. With aerial and underwater photography from Cashmere’s Steven Gnam (National Geographic\, Crown of the Continent)\, and contributions from the Lake Chelan Research Institute’s Anna Galipeau and Phil Long\, this presentation is sure to provide new perspectives on the ever-changing ecological treasure that is Lake Chelan. \nAbout the presenter: Nate Hough-Snee is a Leavenworth\, Washington-based wetland\, aquatic\, and riparian ecologist who researches and restores ecosystems across the Pacific Northwest. Trained as a researcher\, and with a Ph.D. in Ecology from Utah State University’s Watershed Sciences Department\, Nate is an environmental storyteller at heart. Nate currently spins environmental narratives of the Wenatchee and Entiat watersheds\, Lake Chelan\, and Washington’s Olympic Peninsula\, working with the Lake Chelan Research Institute as a senior scientist and as a consultant through his firm\, Meadow Run Environmental. Recently Nate has increasingly focused his attention on understanding how Lake Chelan is changing from periphyton\, invasive species\, and how threats to the watershed might change the Lake. FISH WAR follows the tribes’ fight to exercise their treaty-reserved fishing rights. A landmark court case in 1974 would affirm the tribes’ treaty rights and establish them as co-managers of the resource\, but the fate of salmon in the Pacific Northwest still hangs in the balance. \nFollowing the screening\, the Indigenous Roots and Reparation Foundation (IRRF) will host a Q&A panel discussing the impacts of this film. \nAdmission is free for both WVMCC and tribal members and $5 for non-members. SUMMARY:Hybrid Wilderness First Responder
DESCRIPTION:This course is offered by the Wilderness Medicine Training Center.\nAbout this course\nOur Wilderness First Responder course is designed for outdoor professionals\, those taking multi-day or extended trips\, and people involved with high-risk activities (rock climbing\, whitewater paddling\, mountaineering\, etc.). WFR courses provide the ideal training for people who travel in remote locations\, in challenging weather\, with limited equipment\, unreliable communication\, and little or no access to outside assistance. WFR certification is the industry standard for outdoor guides and instructors. Graduates are trained to care for patients for extended periods and to make independent decisions about evacuation and resources. \nCourse delivery format: Hybrid\nThis course includes both the Online Module and In-person Session. You must complete the Online Module before attending the In-person Session. If you have already completed the Online Module through WMTC or another Sponsor\, you can register for the In-person Session Only option. \nAttending this Course\nLodging: There is an option to add lodging at the Bush School for additional charge during payment. The options are: Single room $55/person/night\, shared room $30/person/night (up to 3 folks sharing a room\, hostel style)\, and camping/vanning $20/person/night. All options have access to shared indoor bathrooms\, semi-commercial kitchen\, and indoor common areas. Lodging options open at 4pm the evening before the course on 11/6\, and close at 10am the morning after the course on 11/12. Add lodging options on during payment. \nMeals and Dining: Mazama Store and the Mazama Public House are the closest options. A variety of other options and grocery stores exist down valley in Winthrop (~20min) and Twisp (~35 min). Those lodging at the Bush School will have access to a semi-commercial kitchen. \nClassroom and Parking Information: Bush School Methow Campus is in Mazama\, WA. A vehicle or bicycle is needed to get there. DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee River Institute presents make a difference in your neighborhood and community! WRI will be participating in this year’s Make a Difference Day. We will be working in the E. Lorene Young Community Garden for this year’s project. \nFor the last two Make a Difference Days\, WRI has worked with dedicated volunteers to dismantle and replace old planter boxes and replace them with new cedar ones built onsite. Now\, there are only 12 boxes left to replace\, and we need your help to finish this project! These new boxes will serve community members for the next decade of fruit\, vegetable\, herb\, and flower growing. \nThis is a family friendly volunteer event! DESCRIPTION:This is WVAC’s flagship event. This event is for the whole community; members and non-members; those just curious and advanced amateurs. No registration is required\, come on out and show up. \n\nHave a telescope but don’t know how to use it? or want some pointers? this is an opportunity to get to know your telescope.\n\n\nNo telescope? No problem! Astronomy is for sharing. Members will have red lanterns below their telescope. Come on up and see what we are looking at. Every member will have a different telescope and looking at something else. The secret password is “Whatchya Looking at?” This is a place for exploration of the curious and answering any questions you have from deep cosmic questions to what type of telescope you should get. \n\n\nHave a telescope and know what your doing? Great! Come on out and meet our members. This is an event for astronomers of the community. This event allows all of us to connect to one another and to our cosmos.\n\nEvery person will be greeted by a WVAC member so new-comers know where to start and how the event works. Come on out and we can all enjoy the stars together in a comfortable environment.  \nBathrooms will be made available on nights that USFWS staff is available in the main building. \nProgram Rules \n \n\nDuring the program\, please avoid the use of white light\, red lensed lights are allowed. White lights are allowed for emergency use.\nPlease dress appropriately for the weather and possible wind; insect repellant may be necessary.\n\nLocation \nWe all will park at the USFWS Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery Parking Lot just outside of the gate. The gate will be half closed\, but please do not drive beyond the gate.  \nThe Telescope Area is just beyond the main building\, about 50 yards from the parking lot. Walk beyond the gates and follow that main roadway straight until you see our red illuminated light sign board.  \nHow to Sign Up \nNo registration is required. No need to sign up\, just come on out and show up. Stay as long as you would like. But please arrive on time\, so we can start introductions and explain how the event works.  \nCost \nWhile the event is free\, donations are gladly accepted. The presentation will start at 7:00pm. \nChimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest is part retirement home\, part rescue\, part educational facility. Learn how this unique organization cares for chimpanzees who have been used in the pet\, entertainment\, and biomedical industries and how the sanctuary has grown over the last seventeen years. Learn about the plight of chimpanzees and other primates and hear stories that illustrate the big personalities\, intelligence\, and resiliency of the sanctuary residents. Find out from a behind-the-scenes perspective what it takes to care for chimpanzees in captivity and what the future may hold for them and others like them. \nAbout the presenter: Diana Goodrich has been with Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest since the first group of chimpanzees arrived in 2008\, beginning as the sanctuary’s Director of Outreach. She and her husband J.B. took on the roles of Co-Directors in 2013. Diana has an MS degree in psychology from Central Washington University\, where she worked with the chimpanzee Washoe and her family\, and an MS in animals & public policy from Tufts University. In her role as Co-Director\, she oversees all fundraising as well as marketing and communications. DESCRIPTION:Leavenworth Winter Sports Club Fall Gear Swap. Fall is around the corner and it’s time to dig out that gear! Although most people are thinking about Winter and Fall gear\, all gear is welcome (think Spring/Summer too) from skis/boards to bikes and paddle boards. \nGet into your gear closet and go out to your garage. Try on all the things. And then come to the Gear Swap to fill in gaps or get rid of redundancies! \nThe gear swap will be at Alpine Lakes covered area. \nSunday\, October 19th\n12pm-3pm Admission: Free \nDo you want a 10×10 space to sell your gear? It’s only $10! ($25 for commercial sellers). All money goes to support the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club. If you are a seller and you have access to a 10×10 and weights (we may be able to assist with weights) to secure it and would be willing to have your space outside the covered area please note this on the application.  Last year we had so many folks selling that we overflowed out of the covered area!  If the weather is good it’s not a problem\, but we want to be prepared! \nThe LWSC ski team will also have a booth that you can donate any of your items to to be sold that will directly benefit the LWSC Nordic and Alpine teams. If you don’t have enough gear for a single booth or just want it out of your house\, this is a great option and helps raise funds for the kids upcoming season. Drop off for this booth starts at 11am. The presentation will start at 7:00pm. \nThis event features new film “Ridge to River” created by Cashmere resident and Emmy-award winning videographer Steven Gnam. After the film\, Friends of Mission Ridge (FOMR)\, a Wenatchee-based\, grassroots non-profit\, will host a Q&A session with the audience. \nA developer proposes a 7\,812-bed luxury resort near the top of Mission Ridge\, adjacent to the Mission Ridge Ski Area. Orchardists\, skiers\, hunters\, birders\, and Tribes are concerned about the impacts that this development would have on the ecology and culture of the region. \nMission Ridge was an oasis during the last ice age\, while the surrounding terrain was buried under thousands of feet of glacial ice or scoured by cataclysmic floods. The mountain became a refuge for plants\, animals\, and early humans\, evidenced by the fact that it has one of the highest occurrences of endemic plants in the region\, and continuous human habitation going back before the building of the pyramids in Egypt. The film\, Ridge to River\, follows locals as they trace lines across the mountain\, following the migrations of the Colockum elk\, chasing ski turns\, and growing food at its base. Ridge to River is a love letter to this landform that stretches from Mission Peak to the Columbia River. \nAbout the presenters:\nSteven Gnam is a FOMR board member\, National Geographic photographer\, Emmy-award-winning videographer\, and author of the book\, Crown of the Continent\, The Wildest Rockies. Steven lives with his wife and daughter in Cashmere\, WA\, with their four ducks. \nMike Rolfs is Friends of Mission Ridge’s executive director. Mike has skied on Mission Ridge for 50 years. Mike builds custom skis at COOP Ski Works. DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee River Institute is receiving a gracious donation of 500 native plants from the Xerces Society and Derby Canyon Natives to help build habitat for endangered bumblebees. These donated native plants provide meaningful forage and nesting opportunities where bees are struggling. By helping plant\, you’re directly contributing to the recovery of at-risk bumblebees in the region! DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday October 14\, Dr. E. F. Cater\, Director of the Douglas County Historical Museum in Waterville\, will present a talk\, “Expansion of Early Roads in the US West.” The program starts at 7:00 PM\, at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center\, 127 South Mission\, in Wenatchee. Business people and shippers built some of the first usable roads. They needed to get wares to market. Others built ways to get to town to buy those goods. \nBuilding new roads\, and connecting roads\, was difficult and expensive. No entity wanted to do that. Not the Federal government\, nor the states\, not the counties. They got pushed into road-building. What happened? \nAround 1912\, the introduction of the automobile\, especially the Model T\, spurred the United States into building auto-routes adequate for travel. There were no transcontinental highways. SUMMARY:Field Work Party- VOLUNTEER! (Event 3)
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a hands-on volunteer work party focused on trail and habitat restoration!  \nYou will help plant native species to improve the health of our local lands. You may also prepare sites for planting\, mulch around new plants\, or help with general trail maintenance. \n\nWe will provide all the tools\, gloves\, and gear you’ll need\, along with water and snacks before and after the event.\nPlease wear sturdy work clothes and closed-toe shoes that are good for hiking and working outdoors.\n\n! Meeting Location: We will meet at the Jacobson Trailhead at 12pm (Address: 1811 Skyline Dr\, Wenatchee\, WA 98801) and will walk up 1 mile to our work location\, Saddle Rock East trail. \nRegistration is required! When you register\, you will get event reminder emails and updates. Please register below. \nAccessibility: The Land Trust is working to make all of our events as accessible as possible.
