SUMMARY:Foothills Wildfire Preparedness
DESCRIPTION:Location: Jacobson Trailhead \nHosted by the Chelan Douglas Land Trust \nCome see how a little elbow grease can transform a piece of land from overgrown to beautifully wildfire-ready. \nWhen we think about wildfire preparedness in our natural lands here in Chelan and Douglas Counties\, we often think of our forests. But what does wildfire preparedness mean in the shrub-steppe habitat close to our lower-elevation communities? At Jacobson Preserve\, the Land Trust has spent the last two years improving habitat and reducing wildfire risk by clearing overcrowded shrubs and planting fire-resilient native grasses and wildflowers. \nJoin Susan Ballinger\, Conservation Fellow\, and Al Murphy\, WSU Chelan Master Gardener\, for this short trailhead talk to explore the work that has been done at Jacobson and ways that local homeowners can use the same techniques to prepare their own shrub-steppe landscapes. Afterwards\, attendees will be invited to stay for a Q&A or may take a self-guided walk at Jacobson. \nRSVP online. Contact susan@cdlandtrust.org or call (509) 667-9708 for more information.

SUMMARY:The Salmon Way\, an Alaskan State of Mind
DESCRIPTION:WRI Red Barn Speaker Event\, Wed. June 12\, 2019\, 7PM (doors open 6:30PM) \nThe Salmon Way\, an Alaskan state of mind\, award winning nature photographer and writer Amy Gulick \nWednesday\, June 12th\, join us in the Wenatchee River Institute’s Red Barn for The Salmon Way\, an Alaskan state of mind\, by Amy Gulick. Doors open at 6:30pm for community social and no-host refreshments\, presentation begins at 7pm. \nAlaskans have deeply personal relationships with salmon. These remarkable fish provide a fundamental source of food\, livelihood\, and identity\, connecting generations and communities throughout the state. Yet while salmon are integral to the lives of many Alaskans\, the habitat they need in which to thrive is increasingly at risk as communities and decision makers evaluate large-scale development proposals. Gulick reminds us that long before Alaska was an oil state\, Alaska was a salmon state. \nThe Salmon Way celebrates and explores the relationships between people and salmon in Alaska. Through story and images\, author Amy Gulick shows us that people from wildly different backgrounds all value a way of life that supports healthy\, wild salmon populations. \nWhile researching for her new book\, Gulick spent time with individuals whose lives are inextricably linked with salmon: Commercial fishermen take her on as crew\, Alaska Native families teach her the art of preserving fish and culture\, and sport fishing guides show her where to cast her line –as well as her mind. Each experience expands our understanding of the “salmon way” in Alaska. \n“Only one species views my images\, so my photographs have to connect people with nature and help them see why it all matters\,” writes Gulick. \nGulick is an award-winning nature photographer and writer\, with images and stories featured in Audubon\, Outdoor Photographer\, National Wildlife\,Sierra\, and many other publications. Her work has received numerous honors including the prestigious Daniel Housberg Wilderness Image Award from the Alaska Conservation Foundation\, the Voice of the Wild Award from the Alaska Wilderness League\, and a Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation. She is also the recipient of a Philip Hyde Grant for her work in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest\, and a Mission Award\, both presented by the North American Nature Photography Association. Her book\, Salmon in the Trees: Life in Alaska’s Tongass Rain Forest\, is the winner of two Nautilus Book Awards and an Independent Publisher Book Award. \nLearn more about Gulick and Pacific salmon by visiting www.thesalmonway.org \n357 Division Street in Leavenworth | (509)548-0181 | info@wenatcheeriverinstitute.org \nwww.wenatcheeriverinstitute.org\, Community Experiences\, Red Barn Events

SUMMARY:New Old Way: Reflections on Health Habitat Connection
DESCRIPTION:New Old Way: Reflections on the health-habitat connection\, Frank Forencich \nJoin community and friends in the Wenatchee River Institute’s Red Barn on Wednesday\, June 19 for author and movement teacher Frank Forencich’s presentation and slide show New Old Way: Reflections on the health-habitat connection. Forencich will guide us in exploring the nature of the human-habitat connection. Doors will open at 6:30pm for community social and no-host refreshments\, with the presentation beginning at 7pm. \nIn conversations about health\, Forencich recognizes that most of our attention is focused on diet\, exercise and more recently\, stress. He wants us to understand\, however\, that the natural world is an essential part of our physical\, mental and spiritual function and that if we neglect this element\, or worse\, destroy our natural surroundings\, we would greatly compromise our health\, our future\, and even our sanity. In New Old Way\, Forencich will share research and ideas that reveal the deep and essential unity of body and habitat\, and suggest some ways we can all do better. \nForencich has worked at the intersection of health\, biology\, ecology and athletics for over 30 years. As a speaker and movement teacher\, he brings a unique perspective to the human predicament and offers practical solutions for some of the most pressing problems of our age. Forencich is known to be a superb public speaker –articulate\, knowledgeable\, and passionate in his presentations. He has an enlightening and entertaining interactive style that captivates audiences\, offering unique and practical advice. \n“Frank Forencich’s engaging and passionate call to action strives to awaken inspiration\, awareness and contagious hope within each of us. It takes bold steps towards shaping a much-needed narrative as we embark on this journey to unlock our personal and planetary potential\,” Susan Prescott MD\, author of The Secret Life of Your Microbiome. \nEarning a BA in Human Biology from Stanford University\, Forencich is the author of several books relating to health and the human predicament including Exuberant Animal\, Beautiful Practice\, New Old Way\, and The Exuberant Animal Experience: Teacher’s Guide to Philosophy\, physicality and rapport.
