SUMMARY:Science on Tap with Tiffa Thedan
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted at Ground Control in Wenatchee. \nCome join Wenatchee River Institute for Science On Tap! This casual\, free event is a great opportunity to gather\, socialize\, and learn about an exciting science topic from a member of our community. No prior science knowledge necessary! Speakers will give a talk on their latest research or a science topic they are passionate about\, with some time afterwards for discussion or Q&A. Presentations start at 7pm – arrive early to grab a drink and get a seat! \nPresentation: Lichens! They’re not moss… \nDescription: Many people see the bushy growths all over the trees here in WA and assume MOSS! This statement may be true on the west side\, but east of the Cascade crest\, much of what we see growing on trees\, and rocks\, and soil is actually lichen. Lichens are a symbiotic organism – made of a fungus and algae (and maybe other things!). If you’re excited to embark on a deep dive into what a lichen is\, the names and terminology for all things lichen\, how they reproduce\, and how they are used by people and wildlife\, come to this talk! You will leave knowing why a lichen isn’t a moss (and how to tell them apart)\, and all about the most common species in our area. \nPresenter: Tiffa is the Land Steward at WRI and serves as a board member of WNPS and NW Lichenologists. They are in love with all the flora and funga of NCW. They are especially interested in lichens and would love to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for these beautiful\, symbiotic\, community organisms. They have a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies/Biology from UC Santa Cruz with plans to start their Master’s degree at Oregon State in the coming weeks. \nIf you want to see more Science on Tap events\, please consider donating at the link below. There will also be a donation basket at this event. \n  \nEvent Link

SUMMARY:Red Barn Event - Good Plants for Good Bugs
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee River Institute \nStreaming link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-3U36Cs8XM \nDoors open at 6:30pm for a community social with beer\, wine\, sparkling water\, and tea available for purchase. The presentation will start at 7:00pm. \nNative plants aren’t only beautiful\, they’re also essential for pollinators! Species like bees\, butterflies\, and other helpful invertebrates rely on these plants for food\, habitat\, and more. Our presenter\, Angie Orpet from the Xerces Society\, will discuss collaborative efforts made by Washington growers to conserve these important species. She’ll discuss how planting native plants and creating pollinator habitat on working lands can assist with crop production. \nAbout the Presenter: \nAngie Orpet works for the Xerces Society\, a non-profit organization dedicated to invertebrate conservation. She has been collaborating with farmers since 2016 to help with resource needs in perennial and annual crops. Angie has worked at Washington State University at the Tree Fruit Research Station and with Foster Creek Conservation District prior to her job with Xerces. She is very excited about native plants and credits much of her learning about Washington’s flora to her involvement with the Washington Native Plant Society. \n  \nEvent Link

SUMMARY:Red Barn Event - Tales from the Saddle
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee River Institute presents \nStreaming link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeZzFqCv8uU \nDoors open at 6:30pm for a community social with beer and wine available for purchase. The presentation will start at 7:00pm. \nWith over 45 years of bicycle touring experience\, Bob and Carolyn have some biking stories to share! They have ridden through cyclones\, snowstorms\, and mud wallows; with a baby\, three teenagers\, and with many families; on single bikes\, on a tandem and on mountain bikes; as newlyweds\, parents\, and retirees; in campgrounds\, wilderness\, youth hostels and guesthouses; with laughter and with tears. \nJoin us for an evening of storytelling through photos and reflective memories highlighting how their touring has changed over the past four decades. They’ll share a bit about gear\, how to take a bike on planes\, trains\, boats\, escalators\, and elevators\, and bike touring resources to know about. If the snow’s not too deep\, they’ll bring their loaded tandem. \nAbout the Presenters: \nBob Bugert (he/him) and Carolyn Griffin-Bugert (she/her) have an extensive bike touring resume. They have cycled internationally in fourteen European countries\, Canada\, Fiji and New Zealand and nationally in Alaska\, Oregon\, Idaho\, Washington and the Southwest. Their trips have ranged from a few days to three months. Almost all of their trips have been self-guided with camping gear. They are well known for being poor photographers\, but they make up for it with good storytelling. They just returned from a five-week tour in Estonia and Finland. Carolyn is the past Executive Director of the Wenatchee River Institute. \n  \nEvent Link
