DESCRIPTION:Each fall\, thousands of hawks\, eagles and falcons fly along a high ridge perched above Lake Chelan on their way to winter territories. Join us for a trip to Chelan Ridge Hawkwatch International observation point so you can witness this amazing spectacle. Learn from local biologists about these birds’ migration\, why they are migrating and how is it all related to habitat and land management. While we are there field station biologists will be working the trapping blind providing the rare close-up opportunity to see a live bird captured\, banded and released! We’ll gather data in an effort to capture information on the health of North America’s raptor populations. DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee River Institute Fall Salmon Walks\, Oct. 4th and 11th\, witness the return of the Pacific Salmon \nThe fall Pacific Salmon migration has begun. Walk along the banks of the Wenatchee River guided by a WRI naturalist to watch these fish jump fully out of the water while in search of spawning grounds. The females move gravel to build a ‘nest’ for their redds (salmon eggs)\, as males battle over fertilization. This is an amazing experience for nearby residents as well as those from out of area\, and not to be missed! \nThe fish now at this river location migrated from the Pacific Ocean to the Columbia River in the summertime. “For someone who has seen salmon spawning many times\, the fascination never diminishes. Considering what they have gone through to get this part of the river –hundreds of miles of river and over dams\, they don’t seem tired at all\, even jumping completely out of the river!” exclaimed Rachel Bishop\, WRI Community Education Lead and Fall Salmon Walk trip guide. \nWRI Fall Salmon Walks\, 10am on Oct. 4 and 11\, 10am-12noon. DESCRIPTION:Lake Wenatchee Geology Tour \n\nOctober 5 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm \n$40 – $45 \n\n\n\nThis is geologic tour in the Leavenworth area\, up the Wenatchee River Valley to Lake Wenatchee. We’ll look at everything from Chumstick sandstone\, to the glacial features from both the Icicle Creek and Lake Wenatchee Glaciers. We’ll see the Leavenworth fault\, identify glacial moraines\, discuss how streams change with time\, and examine 90 million years old igneous rocks and even older metamorphic rocks! \nTour goers will meet at the Wenatchee Valley Museum to board a tour bus that will depart at 9 a.m. The first stop will be at Pinnacle State Park the tour will continue along Hwy 2\, Chumstick Hwy\, and Icicle Canyon with multiple viewing and discussion stops. SUMMARY:Leavenworth Oktoberfest Marathon
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ted Driven. \nA stunningly beautiful course in the scenic town of Leavenworth. Marathoners will start near the renown Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area. Runners will run a loop through the Icicle Canyon the Bavarian Village of Leavenworth through wooded riverfront trails. Mixed surface of asphalt and dirt trails. Surrounded by impressive mountains\, you’ll likely see salmon spawning in the Wenatchee River and Icicle Creek. The half marathon events welcomes both runners and walkers. The marathon is limited to runners who will complete the course within the six hour time limit\, due to course restrictions. The half marathon course is open for four hours. \nLeavenworth is Washington’s “Bavarian Village” located 2 hours east of the Puget Sound bordering the Wenatchee National Forest and Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area. Oktoberfest is Leavenworth’s biggest festival of the year with 3 weeks of music\, parades\, food (and of course\, beverages) and activities for children and adults. DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee Valley Erratics Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute will meet at 7:00 P.M.\, Tuesday\, October 8 at the Wenatchee Valley Museum\, 127 South Mission\, Wenatchee. \n“Searching the Okanogan Drainage for Multiple Ice Age Events and Catastrophic Flooding: A FOOLS Journey” \nGlacial features of the Okanogan area have stories to tell\, and a FOOL has come to tell them. Don Hruska\, retired mining geologist\, is one of four Okanogan residents who formed the FOOLS\, Friends of the Okanogan Lobe. Their quest has been to investigate how geologic forces shaped the Okanogan landscape. \nThe Okanogan drainage is in the heart of the last ice sheet of the 2.6 million-year-old Pleistocene Ice Age. That ice sheet left a covering rich in glacial drift and associated glacial topography in the Okanogan. A number of theories abound about the pre-ice terrain. When was the onset and gradual decay of the ice? Are there indications of older ice events? DESCRIPTION:Pacific Salmon in a changing climate \n\nWednesday\, October 9\, 2019\n7:00 pm 9:00 pm\n\n\nRed Barn\, Wenatchee River Institute\, 347 Division Street\, Leavenworth\n\nPacific Salmon have survived volcanic eruptions\, repeated glaciations\, shifting rivers\, the commercial fishing boom of the late 1800s\, an era of dam building\, and many other human-related changes to their environment. They now face additional stressors related to climate change\, including increased stream temperatures and altered river flows. Join local biologist Tracy Bowerman in a discussion about the adaptations salmon have evolved to persist in a highly dynamic environment\, and how salmon have responded to recent climatic shifts. Tracy will present the latest research on how climate change is expected to affect salmon populations and other organisms that rely on salmon for food and nutrients. \nTracy Bowerman lives in Leavenworth and conducts research on salmon and trout throughout the Columbia River Basin. DESCRIPTION:Join Chelan-Douglas Land Trust and Butte Brand for a fun fall day of volunteering at Nason Creek Alcove! We will meet in Wenatchee at 8:30 am and carpool to the site about an hour away. Once there\, we will focus our efforts on:\nBrush removal in a small parking area and trail\nInstalling a few steps in a steep portion of trail\nInstalling an informational sign\nRemoving a fence\nDepending on the task you choose\, the work will be light to heavy\, involve hiking less than a mile and using hand tools such as loppers\, hand saws\, hoes and shovels. We will break for lunch at 1 pm\, overlooking Nason Creek\, where CDLT staff will explain the history of the property\, its importance for salmon\, and future habitat restoration plans. You can expect to return to our original meeting spot in Wenatchee by 3 pm.\nCDLT will provide instruction\, tools\, snacks\, water to refill your own bottle\, extra gloves and lunch. Please bring a water bottle\, and wear sturdy clothing you can get dirty\, including close-toed shoes. Suzanne Tomassi\, Wenatchee Valley ornithologist and Research Scientist with the University of Sheffield\, UK\, will give a present about her 10-year study in Borneo’s Danum Valley. \nPerhaps the oldest rainforest on Earth\, the remote and unforgettable Danum Valley is a biodiversity hotspot. “I love talking about Danum Valley because most people don’t realize such a place exists. When you step into this deep\, ancient forest\, you can almost feel it breathing around you. Every day you encounter a human-like primate face peering at you through the trees\, or a silent cat creeping by\, and always a cacophony of birds and insects. It’s a wild Disneyland!” tells Tomassi. \nTomassi’s fieldwork uses birds as a means to measure wildlife responses to both natural and human-driven phenomena. Come learn about this ancient forest and see photos of the spectacular wildlife that make it their home. DESCRIPTION:Fall Mushroom Forage with Wenatchee River Institute and Brian Luther \nFall mushroom season is here! Do you want to learn about some of our area wild mushrooms? Thursday\, Oct. 17\, 9-2pm\, Leavenworth resident Brian Luther\, Identification and Field Trip Chairman for the Puget Sound Mycological Society\, will guide us through a fall mushroom forage. \nThe day will begin at the Wenatchee River Institute with a brief introduction to fungi\, where it grows and thrives\, and the role fungi plays in the environment. Luther will then give instruction on what gear is most appropriate for collecting\, what to wear\, and how to stay safe while foraging through the forest. \nMost of the course is outdoors and in the woods\, searching for and collecting mushrooms and other types of fungi.
