One of our reporters or editors interviews the guest or guests live on stage based on questions they have researched and on questions submitted by Wenatchee World readers. After the interview\, we open the floor to questions from the audience. \nWe encourage you to submit recommendations for featured guests as well as questions you have for them. \nSeating is limited to 100 people and is on a first-come basis. DESCRIPTION:DIY Shampoo and Conditioner Bars with Wenatchee River Institute and The Bubblery’s Shawna Lassen \nDate: Jan. 16\, 6-7:30pm \nLeavenworth– When looking for ways to reduce plastic waste and shrink your carbon footprint\, making your own shampoo and conditioner bars is one more step toward that goal. On Thur.\, Jan. 16\, 6-7:30pm\, Wenatchee River Institute (WRI) and The Bubblery\, a soap company in Leavenworth\, will offer a class on making your own bars without of the use of plastic containers and harsh chemicals! \nThe Bubblery’s owner Shawna Lassen\, will teach you how to make shampoo and conditioner bars by formulating a palm and sulfite free vegan base designed to benefit your particular hair type. Various essential oils and herbs will be used such as charcoal\, coconut oil\, rosemary\, orange and lemon peel. \n“My initial motivation to make these bars was simply to cut down on waste and have a more natural haircare option. I also really like DIY projects like this because it educates people on how to create simple items used daily that will have a lower environmental impact and are geared toward personal needs\,” said Lassen.\nTake the step away from commercial shampoos and conditioners often made with harsh ingredients (including lye!) and dispensed in plastic containers not easily recycled. Participants will leave with their own personalized shampoo and conditioner bars. Class cost is $38 for WRI-members and $45 for non-members\, with a limit of 15 participants. All supplies provided and please wear clothing you will not mind getting a little oily or soapy. DESCRIPTION:United by Water\, film by the Upper Columbia United Tribes showing in the Wenatchee River Institute’s Red Barn \nUpper Columbia United Tribes (UCUT) is proud to present their film United by Water on Thur.\, Jan. 23\, in the Wenatchee River Institute Red Barn\, 347 Division St. in Leavenworth. United by Water follows the first tribal canoe journey to\, and gathering in\, Kettle Falls\, WA since the Ceremony of Tears in 1940\, when tribes throughout the Northwest gathered to mourn the loss of their ancestral fishing grounds soon to be flooded by the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam. \nNarrated by author Sherman Alexie\, the film documents this inspiring journey taken in 2016 by members of five tribes from the Upper Columbia River. United by Water chronicles the building of the dugout canoes\, the physical and spiritual journey along the Columbia River and finally\, the landing at Kettle Falls. \nThis timely film highlights the importance of fostering connections to the Columbia River and restoring its salmon runs. Not only is attention brought to the historic wrongs that blocked salmon from the Upper Columbia River\, United by Water shares the current efforts by UCUT\, and other tribes\, to bring forward tribal traditions to help better understand something lacking in today’s society –a deeper connection to the waters that bring life to our communities. \n“I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall\, after an Indian woman puts her shoulder to the Grand Coulee Dam and topples it… I am told by many of you that I must forgive and so I shall\, after that salmon leaps into the night air above the water\, throws a lightning bolt at the brush near my feet\, and starts the fire which will lead all of the lost Indians home\,” from Sherman Alexi’s poem\, The Powwow at the End of the World\, used by permission of Hanging Loose Press. \nThis event is by donation. Travel through space and time by visiting the stars from season to season\, rewinding and fast-forwarding\, as well as viewing the stars as they appear real time in the night sky above. Then travel outdoors through the soft moonlight on a guided snowshoe stroll\, identifying the winter constellations viewed earlier from the planetarium. \n“After leaving the planetarium you will have a more global sense of place\, a better perspective of where we are in the galaxy\, and that everything is constantly in motion\,” said WRI’s planetarium expert and Youth Programs Manager Will Crowley. Snowshoes provided and all ages are welcome. \nThis is a unique opportunity to take a virtual tour of our solar system and beyond\, learning about our sun\, moon\, and stars\, and travel to distant planets. Next\, local naturalists will lead the group of up to 16 on a guided snowshoe stroll under a starry sky (fingers crossed clouds will be absent)\, with ambient light highlighting the meandering Wenatchee River and majestic Wedge Mountain. \nCrowley says\, “My favorite thing about introducing people to the planetarium (and night sky snowshoeing) is all of the Oooos and Ahhhs!” \nOn Jan. 24\, meet by 5pm at WRI’s Red Barn\, 347 Division St. in Leavenworth and prepare for cold\, nighttime temperatures. Mooney has always loved science and computers\, so while in college more than 25 years ago\, he decided to make a career of it. Mooney soon became attracted to healthcare and providing opportunities to participate in projects improving people’s lives through better health. \n“The human genome is really complex! It’s not something we can just have a doctor order a test for and then report on what it says. I think what has surprised me the most is the ease with which we can now determine genetic information and that the cost is relatively low. The first human genome cost the federal government more than $100 million to sequence. We can now determine a person’s genome for less than a $1000. That’s amazing!” said Mooney. \nMooney is a 4th generation Washingtonian and outdoor enthusiast\, frequently spending time recreating with his wife in the Wenatchee Valley. “I love everything science and am constantly working with other scientists to make the world a better place.
