SUMMARY:Trees in Trouble: Wildfires\, Infestations\, & Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee River Institute Presents- \nSave the date for a virtual event with Daniel Mathews on his newest book “Trees in Trouble: Wildfires\, Infestations\, and Climate Change.” \nA troubling story of the devastating and compounding effects of climate change in the Western and Rocky Mountain states\, told through in-depth reportage and conversations with ecologists\, professional forest managers\, park service scientists\, burn boss\, activists\, and more. \nClimate change manifests in many ways across America\, but few as dramatic as the attacks on our western pine forests. In “Trees in Trouble\,” Daniel Mathews tells the urgent story of this loss\, accompanying burn crews and forest ecologists as they study the myriad risk factors and refine techniques for saving this important\, limited resource. \nMathews transports the reader from the exquisitely aromatic haze of Ponderosa and Jeffrey pine groves to the fantastic gnarls and whorls of five-thousand-year-old bristlecone pines\, from genetic test nurseries where white pine seedlings are deliberately infected with their mortal enemy to the hottest megafire sites and neighborhoods leveled by fire tornadoes or ember blizzards. \nScrupulously researched\, “Trees in Trouble” not only explores the devastating ripple effects of climate change\, but also introduces us to the people devoting their lives to saving our forests. Mathews also offers hope: a new approach to managing western pine forests is underway. “Trees in Trouble” explores how we might succeed in sustaining our forests through the challenging transition to a new environment. \nDaniel Mathews is the author of Natural History of the Pacific Northwest Mountains\, Rocky Mountain Natural History\, and Cascade-Olympic Natural History. During a career of writing about the natural history of western North America\, he has backpacked far and wide\, watched for fires from Desolation Peak Lookout\, witnessed a forty-foot fir crash onto his family’s house in a storm\, and lived for years in a forest cabin without electricity\, heating with firewood and writing by kerosene lamp. He lives in Portland\, Oregon. \nThis virtual Red Barn Event is presented in partnership with A Book for All Seasons. \nHow to Watch: This event be streamed on Facebook. Visit our Facebook Live page (linked above) or go to the Wenatchee River Institute Facebook page and scroll down. You do not need Facebook in order to watch this live event. \nPhoto provided courtesy of Daniel Mathews. \n\n\n\n\n\nCONTACT INFO\n Rebecca Ryan\n rryan@wenatcheeriverinstitute.org\n 509-548-0181 ext. 2

SUMMARY:Mountain Trail Clinic
DESCRIPTION:Mountain Trail is one of the fastest growing disciplines in the horse world. Whether you would like to compete or be a better partner with your horse on the trail\, this course can help. The work that you will do with your horse during this 3-day course will create the groundwork for a safe and sane mount out on the trail. There will be over 30 obstacles that we will work on along with arena work to achieve a basic foundation. From beginner trail to advanced trail\, there is something for everyone. \nThe course will begin in the classroom to explain the training methodology and then you’re off to get your horse in hand with just a halter. You will work on basic ground work that will teach your horse to move on the haunch\, shoulder\, forward\, back\, and laterally. Next you will work through the basics of moving through cavalettis and simple obstacles while driving your horse in hand. After lunch the group will move onto the trail course to work on the teeter totter\,\nbridges\, water\, logs\, and more. Day 2 will be under saddle. Trail obstacles will be ridden after they have been accomplished in hand. Day 3 will be spent on the trail course and then out on a trail ride that has real world obstacles to test your new skills. \nEach course will be limited to 10 students and taught by 2 instructors\, ensuring lots of hands-on attention. Chris Jonason has 35 years of horse experience and apprenticed with Mark Bollender for 2 years and she was his first certified apprentice. Chris gleans from both her extensive back country experience as well as Mark’s teachings. She presents an easy step-by-step methodology that will help you and your equine friend attain your goals. Chris was an outfitter and farrier for over 35 years with vast experience in the mountains. Horse and rider will be taught as individuals with consideration for their own goals and desires. \nLocation: Rendezvous Ranch \n9140 Nahahum Canyon Rd\, Cashmere\, WA 98815\n\nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Darkside 2020-CANCELLED-
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 26\, 2020 at 6 PM – 10 PM \nFor more information click here. \nThe Darkside…CANCELLED \n… the infamous ride that started with a small group of Mountain Bikers wanting to ride at night almost 20 years ago has seen MANY changes over the years… \nThe Event has grown and morphed into a large festival…we have had Music acts\, Running races\, hikes\, camping\, taco trucks\, you name since 2001. \nWe have changed locations a handful of times as well! From the days at Beehive\, to Misson Ridge Lodge\, to Ancient Lakes\, and then Squilchuck the last few years. \nWe have seen Mother Nature flex her muscles over the years! From rain\, to Blazing Heat\, to smoke\, and\, of course\, SNOW! When Mother Nature wants to show you who’s the boss\, she can! \nWith all the fun over the years\, I’ve heard grumblings from locals that the Darkside lost the organic feel that it did so many years ago… that MAYBE we “fixed” something that didn’t need fixin’… \n…so this year\, we are going organic. Back to being a ride. Back to standing around a campfire after the ride\, with a hot dog and a coldy\, catching up with new and old friends. Back to NEEDING a light for the ride. Back to celebrating mountain biking in the Wenatchee Valley. It just feels right… \nOur plan is to have it at #2. We are talking with the FS about it\, so not 100% nailed down. We will get you checked in\, and head out around 6 30 ish up Stairway to our First stop at the Shark Fin to catch the sun set at 6 50 pm\, and watch night fall onto the city. Our other stops will be dependent on what trails get built over the upcoming summer. \nWe will all return to stand by the fire\, roast a dog\, raise a glass of cheer to each other\, to our community\, and to Mountain Biking in the Valley! \nWe will get registration up and running later\, but wanted everyone to get this on their calendar! \nBEST in health to you and your family! \n

SUMMARY:Connecting to Place Through the Creative Process
DESCRIPTION:How can the creative process enrich your sense of place? How can it deepen your empathy for other beings? \nIf you’ve ever wondered about the utility of art beyond merely expressing yourself\, this online course taught by Seattle-based artist Carina A. del Rosario will show you some rewarding functions of the artistic process. \nCarina will share inspirations that have developed her own creativity and connections to her environment. She will also facilitate an exercise in ekphrastic poetry that invites us to imagine ourselves in a place and to use our imaginings for discovery and connection. The media covered include photography\, collage\, drawing\, poetry and more. For maximum learning and fun\, you may bring images you find influential and moving to trigger the process she’ll be teaching. \nYou’ll be shown how to create ekphrastic writing – a vivid description of a scene or a work of art – and there will be opportunities for participants to share their work with the group. Prepare to broaden and refine your creative practice in a way that connects you with landscapes and other beings. \nYour registration includes a slideshow presentation about Carina’s work and the work of other influential artists using photographs\, paintings\, papercuts\, collage and other mediums; discussion of the practice of imagining oneself as part of a scene as both a meditative practice and a creative one; guided ekphrastic writing exercise and live share-out with others. Screen reader support enabled. \nFor more information click here.

DESCRIPTION:On October 10\, 2020\, Serve Wenatchee Valley is bringing back their community event “Light the LOOP”\, only this year it is going to have a different look and goal! “We plan to coordinate lighting the entire 9.6 miles of loop trail”\, says Thom Nees\, Executive Director of Serve Wenatchee Valley. “We are inviting our communities to come together and stand in solidarity hand-in-hand or 6’ apart (depending on what phase the counties will be in and in cooperation with the local health district) to celebrate where we are as a Sign of HOPE!” \nLocal organizations\, businesses\, and churches are invited to adopt a 1/8-mile section of the loop within the circle from Chelan County’s Walla Walla Point Park southward across the Columbia River on the Pedestrian Bridge\, down the paved trail north on the waterfront of East Wenatchee\, crossing the Odabashian Bridge (Highway 97) on the north side of town\, and back to the western side. \nWe will begin to gather at 5:30PM\, get into place and light the loop at 7:17PM. Residents who cannot attend in person are invited to shine their light and sound their HOPE from their own homes at the 7:17PM mark. SUMMARY:Living with Volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest Online
DESCRIPTION:North Cascades Institute Presents- \nFire and Brimstone: Living with Volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest Online \nWhat distinguishes the Pacific Northwest from other regions in the United States? Hint: it’s an explosive geological feature. That’s right – our many active volcanoes! From Mt. Baker and Glacier Peak in the north to Mts. Rainier\, Adams and St. Helens\, these iconic glacier-clad peaks of the Cascade Range are part of a 800 mile-long chain of volcanoes\, according to the USGS\, extending from northern California to southern British Columbia. \n\n\n\n“The volcanoes are the result of the slow slide of dense oceanic crust as it sinks beneath North America (subduction)\, which releases water and melts overlying rock\,” the geological agency explains. “Cascade volcanoes have erupted in the recent past and will erupt again.”Join science educator Gina Roberti for an interactive online presentation which will provide you the tools to observe and understand volcanic processes. Become acquainted with the volcanoes in our region and why we have so much volcanic activity concentrated in this part of the world. You’ll also gain awareness of volcanic hazards to serve as an informed community member. \nIn this virtual program\, we’ll use satellite images and aerial photography to make observations of the major stratovolcanoes of the Cascades range. You’ll learn how to observe evidence of past eruptive processes in the rock record on your next hike or drive over a mountain pass. We will also discuss how the science of volcano monitoring and hazards mitigation has shifted with modern technologies and become familiar with the international collaboration of government agencies. Finally\, we will discuss how we as communities can live safely with volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest. \nYour registration includes a 45-minute interactive comprehensive volcano presentation; dynamic exploration using Google Earth of regional volcanoes; discussion of local community and global scientific responses to volcano activity; and time for Q&A and discussion. \nPrepare to have the top blown off your curiosity in this red-hot program!
