DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 30\, 2024\n6:00 pm-7:30 pm\n\nWenatchee River Institute\, 347 Division St. Leavenworth\, WA\nJoin WRI for our Plant Foraging Series. We will be hosting plant foraging workshops to introduce people to the abundance of local plants and their edible\, medicinal\, and functional uses. Each workshop will feature a new plant at its unique harvest time. Participants will learn hands-on how to identify\, harvest\, propagate\, and make use of the plant. Our goal is to empower people to respectfully and reciprocally engage with the plants that live here. \nThe featured plant for this workshop is horsetail\, which is seen abundantly in our area near water. This is an ancient plant first appearing during the Jurassic period and has been used through time for practical and medicinal benefits. \nSarah Michels\, the owner of Infuse Organics\, will teach us about this plant from her medicinal herb farm in Leavenworth. The class is designed to instruct you on foraging and harvesting along with a few ways it can be used. This will be a hands-on class to become more familiar with this plant. \nWe will meet at Wenatchee River Institute and van/carpool to the Infuse Organics farm.\nRegistration required.\nSpace is limited\, so sign up fast! SUMMARY:Birds Up Close: Ornithology Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 27\, 9:00am-4:00pm & Sunday\, April 28\, 6:00am-12:00pm\nWenatchee River Institute – 347 Division St.\, Leavenworth\, WA 98826\nGet to know birds like never before in this weekend-long exploration with ornithologist\, Suzanne Tomassi. You’ll get the chance to see live\, wild birds up-close! \nIf you have an interest in birds and want to know more about the science behind them\, this course is for you. A large component of the weekend will be focused on field methods and putting them into practice during a day of netting\, measuring\, and releasing passerines (songbirds). No prior experience is necessary. This course has been updated to expand on the most fascinating characteristics of birds\, and will emphasize field techniques and an in-depth firsthand account of the instructor’s avian research in Borneo. \nCourse Structure:\nDay 1: 9:00am-4:00pm\nThe morning will be lecture format with slides\, video\, and real examples of feathers\, skulls\, and nests to observe. We’ll go through an overview of bird biology\, touching on evolutionary history\, anatomy and physiology\, behavior\, and more. After a quick lunch break\, we’ll go over field methods for netting birds and discuss some of the gear involved\, and go outside to practice setting up the equipment. We’ll hear how our instructor used these field methods in her 10-year field study in Borneo\, and see some beautiful photos of the amazing birds she got to work with. \nDay 2: 6:00am-12:00pm\nOur second day starts early! We’ll set up mist-nets to trap and measure birds using the techniques we learned about on Day 1. With a little luck\, we’ll catch some birds and participants will be able to take photos and learn to handle a bird in a “ringer’s grip\,” before releasing them back into the wild. In the late morning\, we’ll take down the nets and wrap up with a brief discussion on how to attract the birds we’ve seen to backyards. \nBoth days of the course are question-driven\, meaning that participants should speak up at any time with questions and interests on expanding a topic. DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nClass Tuition: $10 \nWolves are a keystone predator that plays a valuable and important role in the health of our ecosystems. After nearly being eradicated in the early 1900s\, the gray wolf (Canis lupus)\, a native Washington species\, has naturally returned to our state. A wolf pack with pups was confirmed in July 2008 in western Okanogan and northern Chelan counties and represented the first fully documented breeding by wolves in the state since the 1930s! Since then\, the state’s wolf population has increased at an average rate of around 23% every year – 5% in 2022 – and many other wolf packs have been confirmed. \nIn the latest annual census of wolves in Washington State\, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) reports the following good news for wolf recovery: \n\nWashington has a minimum of 216 wolves in the state at the end of 2022\, compared to 209 in 2021\, and 26 breeding pairs in 2022\, compared to 19 in 2021.\nEight new wolf packs were formed\, including four new packs in the North Cascades.\nThere have been greater than four successful breeding pairs in the North Cascades recovery region for three years in a row\, which is an important step toward meeting recovery goals.\nThe Big Muddy pack was the first to establish in the South Cascades.\n\nJoin us for a Zoom presentation with biologists from the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Wolf Advisory Group. They will share an overview of the status of wolves in the state\, provide updates on current wolf packs and take questions too. \nParticipants will learn how they can stay updated\, get involved\, and how the Washington Wolf Advisory Group is working to promote equitable\, inclusive\, and respectful dialogue and decision-making among diverse people to foster durable peace by transforming the root causes of social conflict and providing high quality recommendations on wolf recovery\, conservation\, and management. \nIf you can’t make the specific date or time of a class you want to take\, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the program on your own time! DESCRIPTION:Join Wenatchee Outdoors Executive Director Sarah Shaffer to view the fundamentals of how to rock climb! Whether you have never climbed in your life\, or have tried it a time or two inside\, let’s get down some basics on how to “clean” a route when outside now that the weather is warming up along with discuss “lead” climbing and how to accomplish this outdoors. We can also gain basic knowledge for knots used for climbing and have some more advanced classes down the road for other knot options. At a later date we can take a field trip! DESCRIPTION:Date\nSat\, 04/20/2024\n\n\nTime\n9:00 AM – 1:00 PM\n\n\nLocation\nHorse Lake Trailhead\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, April 20th at Horse Lake Trailhead for the 4th Annual Sage Fest Event– a volunteer trail event co-sponsored by Chelan-Douglas Land Trust (CDLT) and Central WA Evergreen Mountain Bike Association (EMBA). \nWhere we meet will depend on trail and road conditions\, and we will provide more information on this as we get closer to the event. We’ll meet at 9:00 AM\, break into groups that will be shuttled to various access points\, and then regroup for a 1:00 PM BBQ. We plan to do maintenance on Sage Hills and Horse Lake trail systems. This work will be light to moderate and involve hiking 2-5 miles and using hand tools such as hoes and Mcleods along the way. \nCDLT and EMBA will provide trail maintenance instruction\, snacks\, BBQ lunch\, water to refill your own bottle\, gloves\, and tools. Please bring a water bottle\, wear clothing you can get dirty\, and wear closed-toe shoes. SUMMARY:Plant Foraging Series: Arrowleaf Balsamroot
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 8\, 2024\n6:00 pm-7:30 pm\n\nWenatchee River Institute\, 347 Division St. Leavenworth\, WA\nJoin WRI for our Plant Foraging Series. Starting this spring\, we will be hosting plant foraging workshops to introduce people to the abundance of local plants and their edible\, medicinal\, and functional uses. Each workshop will feature a new plant at its unique harvest time. Participants will learn hands-on how to identify\, harvest\, propagate\, and make use of the plant. Our goal is to empower people to respectfully and reciprocally engage with the plants that live here. \nArrowleaf balsamroot is found across the hills of the Wenatchee Valley come springtime\, shining brightly with their yellow flowers. They grow in a large bouquet with the arrow shaped leaves shooting out below the flowers. Nearly all the parts of the plant can be used as food or medicine. \nOur first workshop will be with local herbalist Kyra Skaggs. The class is designed to instruct you on foraging and harvesting arrowleaf balsamroot along with a few ways to turn it into potent herbal medicines that can be used to heal the body\, mind\, and spirit. This will be a hands-on class to become more familiar with this plant. \nKyra owns and operates Balsamroot Botanicals\, a small herbal medicine business focused on making high quality medicines and body care products using locally wildcrafted herbs. She grew up exploring the wildlands of the Pacific Northwest and has always had a special love for plants. Following this passion for plants and the outdoors\, she received a BA in Environmental Education from Western Washington University in 2016 and completed a clinical herbalism program with Wildroot Botanicals in 2020. She started Balsamroot Botanicals in 2022 because she is passionate about using plant medicine to help others take ownership of their health and deepen their connection to the world around them. \nRegistration required.\nSpace is limited\, so sign up fast! These trails are truly spectacular and will allow you to experience the best the desert has to offer\, taking you on a journey through canyon-like gorges\, along the shores of ancient desert lakes and to the base of cascading waterfalls. You will feel like you are in the desert southwest but with a Washington flare. With a distance for everyone\, and the same great support and swag you have come to expect from Run Super Series events\, this is an event you won’t want to miss at this exciting new venue! \nCourse Description\nWith a unique cloverleaf design\, our scenic course will allow you to experience the best of the Ancient Lakes area. The larger 25k loop features 3 smaller loops\, each beginning and ending at a common aid station. The 25k loop features about 2\,200’ of rolling up and down\, with no single climb or descent more than 400’. The trails are primarily single track. The first loop will take you to the a spectacular waterfall and then run along the shores of the Ancient Lakes. The green loop will run out to yet another lake and feature a return trip through some canyon like desert terrain. The blue loop will drop you down into the Columbia River Gorge\, and have you run along the river before climbing back out and rolling to the finish line. The 50k will run the 25k course twice and the 50M will run the 25k course three times. The 10k course will run on portions of the red and green loop and will have about 1\,000’ of elevation gain. DESCRIPTION:Join WenOut team member Jena Edwards for a stroll along the loop trail. Meet outside on the South Plaza of the Pybus Public Market\, at the top of the stairs to the loop trail. The walk will be about 3 miles total on the Apple Capital Loop trail\, out 1.5 miles and back 1.5 miles\, meeting and ending at Pybus. DESCRIPTION:Event Title:\nOur Native Bees (and Other Pollinators) with David Jennings\n\nEvent Schedule:\n5-6:15 pm: Dinner\, benefitting the Community Cultural Center of Tonasket\n6:30 pm: Finding Our Native Bees presentation\, free to the public\n\nLocation:\nCommunity Cultural Center of Tonasket. 411 S Western Ave Tonasket\, WA 98855\n\nEvent Description:\n\nMost of our native bees are so small and fast-moving that we often don’t notice them\, or if we do\, we don’t recognize them as bees. Estimates are that we have upwards of 650 species of native bees here in Washington State\, but only about 500 have been identified to species. Yet bees are a keystone species: without them\, whole ecosystems falter. David will provide an overview of pollination\, explain why native bees are vital\, and share identification tips for common bumble bees. Join in a discussion on how we can meaningfully support our local pollinators.  \nDavid Jennings has an academic background in wildlife ecology and conservation from the University of Georgia and a MPH in Biostatistics from the University of Oklahoma. He is a former WA State Fish and Wildlife Commissioner. David is the current President of the Washington Native Bee Society\, and a past president of the Washington Butterfly Association and the Gifford Pinchot Task Force. Currently\, he also serves on Black Hills Audubon Society’s conservation committee.
