DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nCost for class: $50 \nAmong the most quizzical and overlooked of all life on our planet is the lovely lichen. Lichen can be found on every corner of the earth\, from the poles to the tropics. They are fascinating organisms with many properties\, such as\, food\, medicine\, and dye. \nBridging two kingdoms of life\, lichens are a composite life form. They feature a fungal component as well as a botanical. This accessible workshop provides you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the most unfamiliar inhabitants of your backyard! \nAstonishing variety and near-omnipresence make lichens awfully hard to describe and conceptualize. In this workshop we’ll visit living specimens in the forest to illustrate the basics. The 100-acre woods feature a variety of lichens\, including those of the main growth types that will help us wrap our heads around the incredible variability of shape and form. \nEvan is a program coordinator and field educator at North Cascades Institute who fancies all things fungal in his free time. DESCRIPTION:Looking to get those wheels off the ground? \nOur Stump Jumpers class focuses on the building blocks necessary to tackle jumps and drops. Sail over jumps safely\, and fly through dirt with confidence. This class is for kids 9-12 who want to acquire technical trickery skills. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nInstructor: Mari Schramm \nClass Tuition: $110 \nPlant identification is an essential naturalist practice. Wherever you go\, you can introduce yourself to the botanical residents you meet! As the poet Gary Snyder instructs us: \nWhile seemingly complex at first blush\, plant ID is simplified if you learn to recognize not the species\, not the genus\, but the family of the plants you find. \nThis workshop takes place on the quintessential Sauk Mountain with a marvelous meander with Mari Schramm. Sauk Mountain provides incredible views of the valley lowlands\, the Skagit River\, the Salish Sea and the sea of peaks that is North Cascades National Park. The steep-but-easy trail winding up delivers us to subalpine meadows where Mari will orient us to the lupines\, penstemons\, fireweeds\, paintbrushes\, lilies and other wonders blooming below our feet. We have timed this hike at the typical peak of wildflower bloom\, making it easy to observe all of their parts. \nMari\, a long-time instructor at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center\, will instruct you in the use of a hand lens\, botanical field guides\, and even a dissecting microscope. \nBy the end of the day you will know how to recognize common northwest plant families\, and you’ll find an entirely new layer of interest and wonder on any trail. And the Sauk Mt. trail is probably the most spectacular locale to learn these skills – just don’t let the views distract you from the workshop! \nWondering what you might see on this trip? How have people and other living creatures engaged with Puget Sound? What are today’s challenges and opportunities? \nJoin Institute Education Manager Molly Harrigan as she interviews David B. Williams about his newest book\, Homewaters: A Human and Natural History of Puget Sound. In offering a hopeful perspective on how we can work together to make Puget Sound more habitable for all\, his book comes at a critical moment as residents are working to create a more nuanced and complex picture of this beautiful but suffering place. \nTheir conversation will dive deep into the mysteries of the Sound’s kelp forests. Through research and interviews with archaeologists\, biologists\, and tribal authorities\, David traces how generations of humans have interacted with these underwater ecosystems\, which are as complex as any terrestrial ecosystem. We will dive into the attributes of kelp itself as well as the many species—rockfish\, salmon and crabs—that live\, depend\, and thrive in and around the kelp. \nDavid B. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nInstructor Kaeli Swift \nClass Tuition $15 \nWhether you are keen on them or not\, crows\, ravens and other corvids are often daily parts of our lives. They live and nest throughout the human world from cities to rural communities\, exploiting our resources and watching us perhaps even more closely than we watch them. \nBut our relationship to these intelligent and sociable birds extends far beyond our contemporary experiences with them\, reaching as far back as humans have been telling and recording stories. \nRavens are associated with Apollo in Greek mythology. In the Book of Genesis\, Noah releases a raven from the ark after the great flood to test whether the waters have receded. In Norse mythology\, Odin is accompanied by two ravens – Huginn and Muninn – that serve as his eyes and ears: huginn meaning “thought” and muninn meaning “memory.” The depiction of a three-legged crow is prevalent in various mythologies and arts of East Asia\, while in China magpies are associated with children and marriage.The Kingdom of England will fall\, according to legend\, if the ravens that live at the Tower of London are removed. And\, closer to home\, ravens play a prominent role in the stories of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast\, including the Tsimishians\, Haidas\, Heiltsuks\, Tlingits\, Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish. \nJoin us online as Dr. Kaeli Swift walks us through the various mythology that surrounds corvids from their symbolism in ancient Greece to the creation stories of the Coast Salish people\, and how we can use best practices to celebrate the role of corvids in the cultures of others. \nFor more information click here.

DESCRIPTION:Calling all kids ages 8-12! \nCome join us for a 5-day\, 3 hours a day\, mountain bike camp. The class will continue to develop more specific skills such as track stands\, front and rear wheel lifts\, and wheelies. We will also introduce rollers\, drops and beginning jumping. Be ready to ride trails\, play some games\, and have fun on your bike. \nEach student will be responsible for supplying their own working bike and a helmet. This class is geared towards 8-12-year-olds. SUMMARY:National Parks Free Admission Day!
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the Great American Outdoors Act the National Parks are offering a free admission day! \nThis landmark conservation legislation will use revenues from energy development to provide up to $1.9 billion a year for five years to provide needed maintenance for critical facilities and infrastructure in our national parks\, forests\, wildlife refuges\, recreation areas\, and American Indian schools. It will also use royalties from offshore oil and natural gas to permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund to the tune of $900 million a year to invest in conservation and recreation opportunities across the country. \nNational parks host more than 325 million visitors every year\, and the infrastructure cannot keep up without significant repairs. The network of roads\, trails\, restrooms\, water treatment systems\, and visitor facilities are aging\, and many are exceeding the capacity they were designed to support. The National Parks and Public Lands Restoration Fund will provide funding for priority projects that address the maintenance backlog at NPS facilities\, including campgrounds\, picnic areas\, roads\, trails\, and other critical infrastructure. Specific projects to be funded will be announced in the future.

Have you ever wondered what keeps bees so busy? The answer is simple and practical: pollination. Bees\, as well as many other small creatures on the wing\, have a very important job to do. \nAccording to pollinator.org\, “Birds\, bats\, bees\, butterflies\, beetles\, and other small mammals that pollinate plants are responsible for bringing us one out of every three bites of food. They also sustain our ecosystems and produce our natural resources by helping plants reproduce. \nPollinating animals travel from plant to plant carrying pollen on their bodies in a vital interaction that allows the transfer of genetic material critical to the reproductive system of most flowering plants – the very plants that \n\nbring us countless fruits\, vegetables\, and nuts\,\n½ of the world’s oils\, fibers and raw materials;\nprevent soil erosion\,\nand increase carbon sequestration\n\nThis nearly invisible ecosystem service is a precious resource that requires attention and support” \nDr. Bob Gillespie has worked with pollinators and taught at Wenatchee Valley College for many years. He brings his expertise and enthusiasm for this life-sustaining group of creatures to a day-long workshop. And thanks to Bob’s networking\, we’re highly fortunate to be hosted at the Washington State University’s Northwest Research and Extension Center. \nThis location features 10 acres of gardens maintained for research and education\, as well as an apiary and a pollinator garden. There couldn’t be a more ideal location to learn about pollinators! \nCome along with the Institute as Bob shows us the diversity of pollinators as they buzz about. We’ll learn how to capture pollinators in a net and transfer them to a vial for identification. SUMMARY:The Oceans of Mars: My Five Decades of Mars Research
DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Erratics\, Ice Age Floods Institute’s next Zoom program will be on Tuesday\, August 10 at 7:00 PM. Dr. Vic Baker\, Professor of Planetary Sciences and Geosciences\, University of Arizona\, will discuss The Oceans of Mars: My Five Decades of Mars Research. \nA slew of international Earthling robots are now exploring Mars: 3 rovers on the planet\, 8 orbiting craft\, one stationary lander\, and a small helicopter. \nAll are yielding data about the geological history of very ancient water-related events on the surface. This has been a topic of Dr. Baker’s scientific research since NASA’s Mariner 9 Mission of the early 1970s\, with the discovery of ancient megaflood channels on Mars. He recognized these channels were caused by processes similar to what had formed the Channeled Scabland and other megaflood landscapes of the northwestern U.S. (our backyard!). \nLater Mars surveys have revealed that massive flooding was associated with an immense ocean that covered much of the northern half of the planet.
