DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee Valley Museum Presents-Ice Age Flooding & Glaciation in the Columbia River Valley Geology Tour \nJim O’Connor of the United States Geological Survey (USGS)\, one of the preeminent experts on the Missoula Floods\, guides a tour focused on the ice age floods and glaciation in the Columbia River Valley from Moses Coulee to Pateros. The tour\, slated for 9 am to 5 pm Saturday\, Oct. 6 begins and ends at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center. \nTopics for the tour include the Missoula and other floods and the relationship of these floods to the landscape of the Columbia River Valley\, Moses and Grand coulees. The history of the Okanogan glacial lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet will be highlighted. \nO’Connor majored in Geological Sciences at the University of Washington and earned an M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Arizona. Since 1991\, he has worked at the USGS\, intent on improving understanding of the processes and events that shape the remarkable and diverse landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. His primary research and writing activities center on stream channel and floodplain processes\, glaciers\, floods\, debris flows\, landslides\, geologic and hydrologic hazards and the history of geology. \nO’Connor is a current member of the American Geophysical Union\, the Geological Society of American\, and has served on the Pima County Flood Control Advisory Board\, the Hatfield Science Team. He is the current editor of Quaternary Research. The journal’s scope is global\, building on its nearly 50-year history in advancing the understanding of earth and human history through interdisciplinary study of the last 2.6 million years. \nA leader in scientific geology studies\, O’Connor received the USGS Director’s Award recognizing his work in landslide response\, the USGS Excellence in Science Award and received a Fulbright Fellowship for work in U.S.-Spain Cooperative Science in 2000. DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee Valley Erratics Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute will meet at 7:00 P.M.\, Tuesday\, October 9 at the Wenatchee Valley Museum\, 127 South Mission\, Wenatchee. \n“Exploring the Southern Ocean: Two Months in Antarctica and the Sub-Antarctic” \nDr. John Buchanan\, Prof. of Geology\, EWU\, takes us to unfamiliar territory with stunning photographs from trips to the Southern Ocean. From Ushuaia\, Argentina\, we go to the Falkland Islands\, South Georgia\, the Shetland Islands\, and finally to the land of ice\, the Antarctic Peninsula. \nThe Scotia Sea plate\, at the northern edge of the Southern Ocean at its boundary with the South Atlantic Ocean\, opened in the last 1% of geologic time. Cold ocean currents now pass through the Drake Passage that connects the southwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean and the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean. DESCRIPTION:October 13 @ 9:00 am – 3:30 pm\n\n\nWenatchee Valley Museum Presents- Tule Mat Workshop \nThe museum will host an all-day weaving workshop led by Wanapum elder and master weaver Angela Buck. The workshop with feature the versatile tule\, or bulrush\, as raw material\, to create a sitting mat that can be used for yoga\, picnics or even as an insulating layer on the dining room table. Wanapum tribal elders skilled in the art of tule weaving lead the class. \nHistorically\, the Wanapum\, or River People\, created houses out of mats made from the tall reed that grows abundantly in local ponds\, springs and sloughs. The mats were used to cover winter log houses and summer tepees as well as mattresses\, table mats\, ceremonial sitting mats and burial mats. \nThe tule plant’s unique Styrofoam-like core makes an excellent insulating material and was used by Columbia Plateau indigenous peoples for hundreds of years as a natural air-conditioning system. The plant swelled with moisture during rainy\, wet times to seal gaps in the mats and form an insulating roof. On hot\, dry days the reeds in the mats would shrink allowing cooling breezes to filter into the lodging. \nAll materials are provided and all skill levels are welcomed. Lunch is included. Cost is $100 per person.

Guests will explore some spectacularly beautiful and rugged terrain while learning the unique and powerful natural forces at work in the landscape. Learn how the rule of geologic precedence sets the stage for a flat-land meandering river to become a frozen-in-place meander at the bottom of a deep canyon surrounded by the Manastash\, Umtanum\, Yakima and Ahtanum ridge tops. Besides visiting locations in the canyon\, the tour will stop at the Ginkgo Petrified Forest Interpretive Center at Vantage. DESCRIPTION:The Oktoberfest Trail Runs (10-mile and 5-Mile\, plus kids race) are held on Wenatchee National Forest lands near Leavenworth\, with the start and finish occurring at the Leavenworth Ski Hill facility\, located two miles north of the town of Leavenworth. \nThis event is held during the third and final weekend of Leavenworth’s famous Oktoberfest celebration. And the trail runs serve as a fundraiser for the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club\, which operates the Ski Hill. \nOnline registration: Click here! \nDescription: The 10-mile route will take trail runners from the start at Leavenworth Ski Hill onto the 4 the Boyz Memorial Trail and then the Rosie Boa Trail to the Freund Canyon Trail. Runners will run down Freund Canyon to 4 the Boyz and then back to the Ski Hill.  This is a challenging and hilly course. \nThe 5-mile run will be entirely on the existing ski hill trail system. We are about halfway done with this 1.5 mile entirely hand-built trail. This is challenging\, but rewarding and fun physical work outside\, and we have something for every skill level\, from raking to swinging a pick\, maybe even rolling up some stray barbed wire near the trail if we have enough volunteers! \nThe Land Trust will provide snacks\, lunch\, water to refill your own bottle\, gloves and tools. Please wear clothing you can get dirty\, sturdy\, closed-toe shoes\, bring your own work gloves if you have them\, and pack a small pack with layers of clothing–the weather at the Horse Lake Reserve is often different from Wenatchee. If you have dietary restrictions\, we recommend bringing your own food. \nPlease sign-up online ahead of time so we can get an accurate headcount for lunches\, and so we can provide you with details for the work party. Learn more about becoming a CDLT citizen scientist volunteer by contacting Conservation Fellow\, Susan Ballinger at susan@cdlandtrust.org or call 509-667-9708. Please note: contact Susan by cell phone 24-hours ahead (509-669-7820) to confirm\, because changing weather conditions can result in cancelling the route. \nCDLT is recruiting volunteers to help with two once/month bird monitoring projects. \n\nMountain Home Preserve eBird Monitoring Project\, prior to the thinning project that will restore a pre-settlement open ponderosa-pine forest.  Meeting at 6am at the Safeway store in Leavenworth\, or Susan will pick up carpoolers in Wenatchee at 5:30am at the Penny Road Park and Ride. We walk a 2.2-mile route\, stopping at 5 points to conduct 10-minute counts. Upcoming Dates:  Oct. 18\, Nov. 15.\nHorse Lake Reserve eBird Monitoring Project:  Meeting at 6am at the end of the pavement on Horse Lake Rd. to carpool up the gravel road\, we walk a 5-mile route\, stopping at 7 points to conduct 10-minute counts. Richard Hart talks about the current status of Wenatchi Fishing Rights on the Wenatchee River. The evening includes a screening of the newly updated False Promises\, a film documenting the history of events leading to the Yakima Treaty of 1855 and the Wenatchi Band’s quest for the fulfillment of treaty rights. The film is based on the research of Hart\, who draws on more than 30 years’ experience in tribal issues. Through interviews with Hart and living tribal members\, archival photographs and the words of the last Wenatchi chief\, Chief John Harmelt\, the Wenatchi people are vividly brought to life. \nThis event is part of the Wenatchee Valley Environmental Film & Lecture Series. Washines uses the reintroduction of the Wapato plant as an example of the connection of indigenous foods to the health and culture retention of the Yakama tribe. In her 60-minute slide show presentation\, Washines talks about interviewing elders\, visiting traditional food gathering grounds and ultimately reclaiming land that had grown wheat for 70 years back to its historical roots of prime wapato wetland. \nWashines is a member of the Central Washington University board of trustees and president of the Yakima Environmental Learning Foundation. She is a lifelong learner of Ichiskiin Sinwit\, the Yakama language. Her published documents include: “Natural Restoration and Cultural Knowledge of the Yakama Nation” and “Indigenous Rights\, Water and Development: The Skokomish and the Yakamas.” \nThis event is part of the Wenatchee Valley Environmental Film & Lecture Series. Beehler\, PhD Research Associate\, Division of Birds\, Smithsonian Institution \nWenatchee River Institute Presents-In this illustrated lecture\, naturalist and ornithologist\, Bruce Beehler\, will recount his hundred-day-long 2015 field trip following the spring migration of songbirds from the coast of southeastern Texas up the Mississippi and thence into the boreal forests of northern Ontario— breeding ground of many of the beautiful and vocal North American wood warblers. Along the way\, Beehler visited various migratory bird field projects as well as scores of local\, state\, and national parks and refuges critical for the preservation of the migration phenomenon. He also spent time in an array of eclectic and beautiful rural communities from southern Louisiana and Mississippi through the Heartland and to the northern limit of roads in Ontario\, land of the Cree and Ojibwe First Nations peoples. Beehler’s informal goal was to spend time with all thirty-seven eastern wood warblers on their prime breeding habitat. In pursuing this objective\, he saw a lot of deeply rural North America.
