SUMMARY:Spirit Whales & Sloth Tales
DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Erratics Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute’s next program will be Tuesday\, December 12 at 7:00 PM. This is a hybrid program\, with the speakers presenting remotely via Zoom from Seattle. For those who are not computer-or Zoom-savvy\, you can attend in-person for a screening at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center\, 127 S. Mission\, Wenatchee. Or at home via Zoom link https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84520197937   Webinar ID: 845 2019 7937 \nIn Washington\, you are never far from the past\, including evidence of plants and animals that came before. Fossil flowers in Republic. Trilobites near the Idaho border. Primitive horses on the Columbia Plateau. Tracks of giant birds near Bellingham. Curious bear-like creatures on the Olympic Peninsula. With abundant and well-exposed rock layers\, Washington has fossils dating from Ice Age mammals from only 12\,000 years ago\, to marine invertebrates more than 500 million years old.\n\nJoin co-authors Dr. Liz Nesbitt and David B. Williams as they discuss this rich array of past life\, which is featured in their new book\, Spirit Whales and Sloth Tales: Fossils in Washington State—the first book ever on fossils in the state! Why did they choose the fossils they did? What is the new science that has allowed paleontologists to tease out the 500-million-year long story of life in this region?\nLiz Nesbitt is curator emerita of invertebrate and micropaleontology at the Burke Museum. David B. Williams is an author\, naturalist\, tour guide\, and Curatorial Associate at the Burke Museum. Please sign in\, or show up\, at 7:00 PM\, December 12! SUMMARY:A Winter Watercolor Workshop-Online
DESCRIPTION:Snowy Trees and Misty Mountains a Winter Watercolor Workshop Online \nThis event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nTuition: $50 \nGet cozy with a cup of tea and your watercolor paints for a new winter-themed workshop with local adventure artist Claire Giordano. \nIn this interactive online class\, local artist Claire Giordano will share with us her favorite techniques for painting two iconic elements of winter landscapes in the Pacific Northwest: trees draped in snow and mountains wreathed in mist and cloud. \nAfter exploring some of the magical (and unpredictable!) effects of watercolor\, we will put our new skills into practice as we paint two winter scenes with step-by-step guidance from Claire. These two paintings could also make lovely gifts or cards for the holidays. \nOver the last ten years of creating outdoors Claire learned to work with watercolor in a way that is fun and accessible to artists of all levels\, and she is excited to share her favorite painting medium with our Institute audience! \nA simple supply list will be included with your class registration. We look forward to seeing you online. Lastly\, please note that by registering for this workshop you agree to share your email address with our instructor Claire. \nIf you can’t make the specific date or time of a class you want to take\, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the program on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time to re-watch too. \nFor more information and to register click here.

SUMMARY:The Doctrine of Recovery
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center \nOn Thursday\, Nov. 9\, 2023\, attendees will have the chance to view this widely acclaimed film\, which won the 2023 Dreamspeakers Feature Documentary award. \n\nSince 1493\, the so-called Doctrine of Discovery has justified the dispossession and decimation of the Indigenous inhabitants of North America and brought us to our present environmental breaking point. The Doctrine of Recovery is an Indigenous antidote to rebalance Earth systems\, restore the sacred feminine\, and ensure our species survival. \n\nThree generations of Tribal women – Casey Camp-Horinek\, Crystle Lightning\, and Juliet Langley Hayes – speak what has gone unspoken\, and unapologetically expose the influence of founding patriarchs and white supremacy in places most never thought to look\, and in doing so demonstrate the ongoing and devastating formula patterned by the Doctrine of Discovery. \nAdmission is free for members and $5 for non-members. Registration can be found here. \nFor more information click here.
