It only suggests where to look: Discover this\, reexamine that\, put one thing in relation to another\, orient yourself\, begin here… Sometimes a map speaks in terms of physical geography\, but just as often it muses on the jagged terrain of the heart\, the distant vistas of memory\, or the fantastic landscapes of dreams.” \n― Miles Harvey\, The Island of Lost Maps  \nThis event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nThis class is comprised of two online sessions: November 5 from 10-11:15 am and November 15 from 6-7 pm \nMaps are powerful\, visual tools that tell stories of exploration. During this two-session online workshop\, artist Véronique Robigou invites you to take an interesting tour of beautiful and intriguing maps through time and then to create one of your own. \nThe first online session on 11/5 at 10 am will start with early explorers of Earth discovering new territories. We will also look at lesser-known maps depicting major historical events and geological or biological processes evolving through time\, and even personal experiences reflecting one’s life or some of its milestones. \nWe will survey the elements that compose maps of various types and discuss the mapper’s creative choices that facilitate the interpretation of maps by specific audiences or that highlight specific points. \nInspired by these examples and guided by instructions\, we will then try our hand at producing a map of our own in the week between sessions! Upon debut\, this production was seen as Merc Playhouse’s best original production.\n\nThese special encore performances will begin with a prayer from Randy Lewis\, followed by readings from the original short story by author Phil Davis and musical performances from Rebecca Kinney\, playing Spring\, and Andrew Tuller\, playing Buck.\n\nIn Twisp\, Kristen Kirkby will join the cast after the performance for a lively discussion about salmon and the role humans play in their future. DESCRIPTION:Beyond Borders: Transboundary Conservation in an Interconnected World (online) \nThis event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nClass Tuition: $10 \nNature knows no borders. Despite this\, the political boundaries of the modern world have a profound influence on our landscape. \nThe North Cascades Mountains retain large tracts of wild land that support a great diversity of species\, but these mountains are split by the 49th parallel\, the international border between Canada and the United States. While this line has great meaning and importance in the lives of Homo sapiens\, it is largely irrelevant to the other species that make these mountains their home – at least as far as they are aware. \nDuring this session\, we will explore the transboundary nature of the North Cascades\, how borders can be both meaningless and very consequential\, and why healthy ecosystems need to function across these boundaries.
