DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Sunrise Rotary Club is proud to host the 2021 Apple Century Bike Ride on Saturday September 25. We continue to monitor the current health and safety protocols to offer our participants a successful event. Registration is scheduled to open ASAP.\n\nDETAILS:\n25\, 50 or 100 mile fully supported ride through the Wenatchee Valley.\nRide begins in Wenatchee continuing to Lake Wenatchee and returning for the full 100 mile experience\, or riders can opt to return once arriving in Leavenworth.\n\nRegistration fees help support our Challenge Scholarship Program\, focusing on at-risk high school students. Our club\, while working with school counselors\, identify 10th grade students that are at risk of not graduation high school. After the selection process up to 8 students are paired with mentors (club members) for a two-year period. During the two-year period club members help keep the students on track to graduate\, with the possibility of 2 students being awarded a $10\,000 scholarship each to the college or trade school of their choice.\n\nThe Wenatchee Sunrise Rotary Club helps fund a number of local projects such as Rotary Park\, and the Second Harvest Food Truck. Our club is also involved with hunger & disaster relief\, Polio eradication\, international student exchange programs\, and numerous community projects.\n\nRegistration Information

The trip simultaneously illuminates the beauty and fragility of the canyon and of life as Forest grapples with the reality of his rapidly aging father and struggles to find his own path. \nABOUT “UNFENCED” \nThe Red Desert in southwest Wyoming is the largest unfenced area in the continental United States. DESCRIPTION:October 6 @ 7:30 AM – 10:00 AM \n\n\n\nLocation: Horan Natural Area \nRegistration is not required \nWe are pleased to announce that the NCWAS Friends of Horan monthly bird walks through Walla Walla Point Park and the Horan Natural Area are beginning again after months of pandemic denial. We follow the latest CDC guidelines for Covid protection. If you are vaccinated\, you can participate in these bird walks without using a mask. Carpooling to the parking area is fine if everyone is vaccinated. If you are not vaccinated\, please wear a mask and do not carpool to the parking area. Simple\, right? \nThere is no registration required for these walks. Just show up\, be prepared for the weather and\, walk about 2.5 miles on easy\, gravel trails. Each of the walks begins at 07:30am and ends by 10:00am. It is fine to leave the walk early if you have limited time. The walks begin at the north-most parking lot in Walla Walla Point Park near the restrooms. Parking does not require a Discovery Pass and is free (thank you Chelan PUD). \nEvery walk follows a protocol to visit several sites and the bird sightings are entered into eBird. Multiple paces and route distances will be offered each day ranging from 37 miles with an elevation gain of 2\,800 feet to 56 miles with 5\,000 feet of climbing.\nThe tour includes SAG support with a scheduled food stop during the rides.\nRides each day will start at Don Morse Park in downtown Chelan and you are not required to ride each day.\nThe charge per rider for the weekend is for the three day ride support. DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Erratics\, Ice Age Floods Institute’s next ZOOM program will be on Tuesday\, October 12 at 7:00 PM. Joel Gombiner\, PhD candidate at U. of Washington will discuss “Moses Coulee Megafloods.” \nMoses Coulee is unique from other Scabland canyons because it lacks an obvious tie-in to the Columbia River. It heads in the middle of the Waterville Plateau\, but lacks clear feeder channels or flood-scoured surfaces that link to the Columbia River. How did it get there? How was it formed? And when? \nUsing field observations and laboratory analyses of rocks and minerals transported by the megafloods\, Joel will present new\, unpublished data using megaflood deposits in the Coulee that suggest it formed before the last glaciation\, that it flooded prior to the Grand Coulee during the last glaciation\, and that Lake Missoula was a flood source for at least some\, but not all\, Moses Coulee floods. \n\n\nZOOM link:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86226617396

People are tuning in from further afield\, and our persectives on our home region are informed by considering other distant ecosystems. Thanks to a fellow environmental educator on the other side of our continent\, we have an opportunity to consider an ecosystem on the Atlantic coast with some intriguing similarities! \nJoin Dr. Sarah Bois\, Director of Research and Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation based on Nantucket Island\, Massachusetts for a discussion about the similarities and differences in habitats\, ecology\, and land use between our two coasts. \nWe’ll explore our cross-continent similarities starting with the geologic history that defines both regions and on through current land ownership and the challenges each region faces. Sarah will use her experiences in conservation on both coasts to look at invasive species\, coastal grassland management and rare species conservation comparing and contrasting the two regions. \nWe’ll highlight what we can learn from each other both in terms of successes and areas in need of improvement. By 2050\, the world will need to feed 10 billion people. Today\, 30% of crops feed meat\, meaning feed production competes with food production. Beta Hatch is industrializing insect agriculture here in the Wenatchee Valley to solve these problems. Mealworms\, we like to say\, are a super bug\, digesting waste that ordinarily has low or no value. Our insect-protein production platform converts mealworms and their waste into high-value proteins\, oils\, and nutrients for agriculture.
