SUMMARY:Centuries on Foot: Historic Trails in the North Cascades
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nThis event is online. \nClass tuition is $10. \nTrails thousands of years old remain underfoot in Washington and in the North Cascades. For ancient travel and 21st century treks alike\, well-worn paths wind through the lowlands\, valleys and peaks of this Northwest corner of the state. Where were people going? What were they looking for—mountain goats\, huckleberries\, gold\, grazing\, the international boundary\, a route for a railroad or a highway\, fire\, perhaps even purely adventure? \nIn this online gathering with historian and writer Judy Bentley—author of Hiking Washington’s History—we’ll follow in the virtual footsteps of people who have gone before us: an indigenous Okanogan leader\, a fur trader\, an army lieutenant\, the proprietor of a boarding house at Diablo\, a Japanese railroad worker\, forest service geographer\, prospectors\, a boarding house operator at Monte Cristo\, an adventure traveler writing for Cosmopolitan magazine\, a lonesome homesteader\, a highway engineer\, and the infamous Poets on the Peaks. \nWe’ll add your own adventures and explorations of these storied trails to the historical record\, and by the end of our gathering\, you’ll have gained a new sense of how these trails we love to hike came to be and appreciation for the thousands of footprints laid down before us. \nJudy Bentley is faculty emeritus of South Seattle College where she taught composition\, literature\, and Pacific Northwest History. \nTo register or for more information click here.
