SUMMARY:National Park Free Admission Day for Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Day to the National Parks in honor of Veterans Day \nMany national parks have direct connections to the American military—there are dozens of battlefields\, military parks\, and historic sites that commemorate and honor the service of American veterans. In addition\, every national park is part of our collective identity that defines who we are and where we came from as a nation. They are tactile reminders of the values\, the ideals\, and the freedoms that our veterans protect. \nThe majestic landscapes\, natural wonders\, and patriotic icons that we cherish as a society have also inspired military members through the years. The Grand Canyon\, Mount Rushmore\, the USS Arizona Memorial\, and the Statue of Liberty are just a few of the national parks that have served as reminders of home to those stationed abroad. On Veterans Day\, or any day\, honor those who have served and sacrificed for our country with a visit to a national park. \nThe National Park Service invites all visitors to remember our veterans by visiting any National Park Service site for free on Veterans Day (November 11). Find tips to recreate responsibly while you visit!

SUMMARY:Sagebrush Seed Collection near Spiva Butte
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sat\, 11/13/2021 \nTime: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm \nLocation: Spiva Butte \nChelan-Douglas Land Trust and Conservation Northwest invite you to join a Saturday\, Nov. 13\, 2021\, work party to help collect big sagebrush seeds.  We welcome families and volunteers of all ages and abilities\, who will enjoy spending a day in the sagebrush grasslands of rural NE Douglas County where it is usually windy and cold.  The location is 1-1/2 hour drive from Wenatchee\, 2-1/2 hours from Spokane\, and 1-1/2 hour drive from Winthrop. We will meet at 10am (detailed location directions will be provided) and conclude at 2pm. \nOur goal is to collect seedheads to use to replant big sagebrush on CDLT’s Spiva Butte Nature Preserve where the 2020 Pearl Hill Wildfire killed all sagebrush.  Greater Sagegrouse\, Sage Thrashers\, and many other native wildlife depend upon sagebrush for food and habitat. Our goal is to quickly re-seed this shrub on the 1300-acre preserve.  Part of the seeds will be used in nurseries to grow seedlings. Most will be used in late fall\, distributed by a field crew who will fling seedheads within the preserve to simulate natural wind-blown dispersal.  CDLT conducted a pilot flinging project in 2020 and the positive results show the effectiveness of this novel method. \nParking is along a well-maintained county gravel road. Volunteers will walk cross country on uneven flat ground for up to 1-mile.  Volunteers will be within sight of parked vehicles\, so extra clothes\, food\, and water can be left in vehicles for easy access.   Volunteers will use hand clippers or scissors to cut seedheads and place them into a lightweight bag\, tucked into a belt. \nEveryone’s safety is our top priority at these events. Please read CDLT’s COVID Safety Protocol and do not attend the event if you are feeling unwell. Remember to bring a face mask to wear when you’re around other people\, work gloves\, hand sanitizer\, water\, snacks\, layers of clothing appropriate for the task & weather on site\, close-toed shoes.  We’ll supply some sweet treats and raffle off 4 gas cards. \nPlease RSVP by filling out the form so we can provide you with details for the work party as the date approaches. \n*All work parties are weather and conditions dependent. Canceled work parties will be rescheduled if possible. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Susan Ballinger (susan@cdlandtrust.org) or Keith Watson (keith@conservationnw.org).

SUMMARY:Orca-Shared Waters\, Shared Home
DESCRIPTION:Red Barn Event: Orca – Shared Waters\, Shared Home \nTuesday\, November 16th 7:00PM-8:30PM @ WRI Red Barn \nIn Orca: Shared Waters\, Shared Home journalist Lynda V. Mapes explores the natural history of the orca and the unique challenges for survival of the Southern Resident group that frequents Puget Sound. These whales are among the most urban in the world\, a focus of researchers\, tourists\, and politicians alike. Once referred to as “blackfish” and still known as “killer whales\,” orcas were for generations regarded as vermin to be avoided or exterminated\, then later were captured live for aquariums all over the world. With greater exposure\, scientists realized how intelligent the mammal is and are learning about their matriarchal family groups\, vocalizations\, behavior\, and different subspecies. Today only 74 Southern Resident whales are left\, and they are threatened by habitat degradation\, lack of chinook salmon (their primary food source)\, relentless growth\, and climate change. Can we reverse the trend? \nMore information: https://wenatcheeriverinstitute.org/event-calendar.html/event/2021/11/16/red-barn-event-orca-shared-waters-shared-home/347770

DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee Valley Erratics Zoom Program \nWhen: December 14\, 2021 at 7:00PM\, when Stephen J. Angster\, Research Scientist with the USGS Earthquake Science Center\, Seattle Field Office\, will present: \n“Paleoseismic history and hazards associated with the Wallula fault zone: A new look at clastic dike features in southeast Washington” \nIn an effort to better understand seismic hazards within the Tri-cities region of SE Washington and NE Oregon\, the USGS is leading an effort to characterize the paleoseismic and rupture history along the Wallula fault zone. In this talk\, Steve will share recent field observations and new geochronologic data collected from a paleoseismic trench and roadcut exposure that display Holocene age liquefaction features (e.g. clastic dikes). These features appear within late Pleistocene slackwater deposits of the Missoula Floods (aka. Touchet Beds); and cap Holocene loess. Stratigraphic and sedimentologic relationships along with luminesces ages of the liquefied sediment suggest up to four seismically-induced liquefaction events during the Holocene\, any of which were likely triggered by earthquakes sourced from either the Wallula fault zone and/or faults of the Yakima fold and thrust belt. Additional observations and analysis along a newly discovered late Holocene scarp indicate that the scarp is most-likely tectonic in origin and plausibly the surface rupture trace of the 1936 Milton-Freewater earthquake. \nHere’s our Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82730527571 Sign in at 7:00 PM\, Tuesday December 14.

SUMMARY:Highland Wonders-Okanogan Ice Islands
DESCRIPTION:When: Friday\, January 7 at 6:30pm \nWhere: Community Cultural Center of Tonasket\, 411 S. Western Ave. \nWhat: Highland Wonders; Okanogan Ice Islands: Nunataks\, with George Thornton \nDescription: \nHigh\, craggy peaks rise to the West of the Okanogan. These mountains are home to unique plant communities\, and our glacial history holds a clue as to why and how those plants come to live where they do. The changing climate endangers these indicators of our glacial past. In this edition of Highland Wonders\, we will discuss various theories about local natural history and ecology using Chopaka Mountain as a primary example of several nearby Eastern Cascade peaks. \nJoin OHA and George Thornton\, high school teacher\, botanist\, and lifelong nature enthusiast\, at the Tonasket CCC on January 7\, 2022. George has lived his entire life in the Okanogan. He taught for 33 years\, worked summers doing vegetation surveys for the Forest Service\, and has hiked and explored most of the north Okanogan area. \nContact: Jennifer Weddle jen@okanoganhighlands.org \n509-429-4399
