DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nThis event is online. \nClass tuition is $10. \nTrails thousands of years old remain underfoot in Washington and in the North Cascades. For ancient travel and 21st century treks alike\, well-worn paths wind through the lowlands\, valleys and peaks of this Northwest corner of the state. Where were people going? What were they looking for—mountain goats\, huckleberries\, gold\, grazing\, the international boundary\, a route for a railroad or a highway\, fire\, perhaps even purely adventure? \nIn this online gathering with historian and writer Judy Bentley—author of Hiking Washington’s History—we’ll follow in the virtual footsteps of people who have gone before us: an indigenous Okanogan leader\, a fur trader\, an army lieutenant\, the proprietor of a boarding house at Diablo\, a Japanese railroad worker\, forest service geographer\, prospectors\, a boarding house operator at Monte Cristo\, an adventure traveler writing for Cosmopolitan magazine\, a lonesome homesteader\, a highway engineer\, and the infamous Poets on the Peaks. \nWe’ll add your own adventures and explorations of these storied trails to the historical record\, and by the end of our gathering\, you’ll have gained a new sense of how these trails we love to hike came to be and appreciation for the thousands of footprints laid down before us. \nJudy Bentley is faculty emeritus of South Seattle College where she taught composition\, literature\, and Pacific Northwest History. \nTo register or for more information click here.

DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center \nFor more information click here. \nOn March 1\, 1910\, the deadliest avalanche in North American history swept down the snowy Cascades\, burying two trains and killing 96 people. \nWe are offering a guided tour of the Wellington Site led by Randy Dasho on Saturday\, September 9th. This tour visits several other sites between Leavenworth and Stevens Pass that played important roles in the history of the Great Northern Railway Company. Tour-goers meet at the Wenatchee Valley Museum to board a tour bus that departs at 9am. The bus heads west on U.S. Highway 2\, stopping for discussion at different points of interest. The final stop is at the interpretive site at Wellington\, where participants will have lunch and take a half-mile walk around the area of disaster. The bus will return by 3pm. Please bring a lunch\, plenty of water\, and good walking shoes. \nRandy Dasho of Port Orchard\, WA will speak about the Great Northern Railroad and the Wellington Disaster of 1910 at 6:30pm on Friday\, September 8th. His talk stems from a trip he took in September 2022. Highlights include seeing the divergent plate boundary apparent at the surface\, the Icelandic Hotspot\, many basalt flows\, geothermal fields and geothermal energy\, geysers and hot springs\, glaciers and waterfalls. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid meeting. DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by Waste Loop\nLocation: Sage Mountain Natural Foods in Leavenworth\n\nCalling all aspiring basket makers! Come learn how to make a basic coiled basket using old rope and reclaimed fabric.\n\n\nThis method can be adapted to make baskets large and small\, coasters\, hanging storage devices\, natural fiber baskets\, abstract creatures\, and whatever your imagination can conjure! No experience necessary. We will provide materials\, but if you have old rope (any diameter) or fabric (longer than a few feet) lying around that inspires you\, please bring. And if not\, but you know any rock climbers\, check with them\, because they may just have a tub somewhere full of retired ropes. DESCRIPTION:This event will be held from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at 155 N Worthen Street (the parking lot near the pedestrian bridge and little railway\, just north of Pybus). \nThese events are FREE and open to everyone in our community ages 5 to 105+ with cognitive\, physical\, and/or sensory impairments. As with previous events\, Outdoors for All will be providing a wide variety of adaptive bikes including handcycles\, trikes\, recumbents and tandems for participants to ride on the Loop Trail.
