SUMMARY:Weed Warrior-Grass Assassins
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Chelan Douglas Land Trust\n\nDate\nThu\, 06/01/2023\n\n\nTime\n8:30 AM – 11:00 AM\n\n\nLocation\nHorse Lake Reserve Trailhead\n\n\n\n\nWant to improve the success of our native grass restoration? Want to fit in an upper body workout before your hike or bike ride? Become a Weed Warrior – Invasive Grass Assassin! We will meet on Wednesdays\, weekly\, until about mid-June. \nStop by for as long as you want to help CDLT staff hoe weeds in the restoration area near the concrete slab where the barn used to be at Horse Lake Reserve. \nWe will mainly be removing bulbous bluegrass (we need to get it before it spreads!)\, which is a shallow\, fibrous-rooted\, perennial weed that we were not able to control during the weed spray last fall. Our native basin wildrye\, Idaho fescue and bluebunch wheatgrass need your help to survive! Please join us\, even if it’s just for 15 min. We need all the help we can get. \nYou do not need to be able to recognize the different grass species – we will flag native plantings as we go and work in sections\, so you know what to hoe out and what to leave. We can also teach you some ID characteristics of each of the grasses growing in this area – both the natives and non-native. \nTo register for this event please email Tiffany Theden\, Stewardship Assistant: tiffany@cdlandtrust.org. 310-254-0067 \nThank you in advance for being as tenacious in your support of restoration as the weeds are in growing. \nHoes\, gloves\, and snacks will be provided. \n*All work parties are weather and conditions dependent. Canceled work parties will be rescheduled if possible.

SUMMARY:Weed Warrior Knapweed Pulling
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Chelan Douglas Land Trust \n\nDate\nWed\, 05/31/2023\n\n\nTime\n5:30pm-7:30pm\n\n\nLocation\nLower Sleepy Hollow Preserve\n\n\n\nAre you looking for a hands-on way to positively impact our lands in just two hours? \nDo you like to get outside in the company of other like-minded folks? \nConsider signing up to join the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust for our Weed Warrior knapweed pulls this spring! \nWhat & Where? – A weed hand-pulling volunteer project at our newly acquired Lower Sleepy Hollow Preserve. Sign up for one or more work party dates and times! \nWhy? – Our goal is to hand-pull knapweed as one element of a larger habitat improvement plan. By pulling the weeds before they flower and set seed\, we can leave the plants on-site with no need to bag them! \nWill it be fun? – Conversations can flow as we work in the shade of cottonwood trees\, listening to birdsong along the Wenatchee River. Consider inviting your friends or family members to join you for one or more of these outdoor work parties. Our time on-site will be limited to 2 hours. \nHow? – We will send you a follow-up confirmation email with full logistic details. \nThe youngest age is 5 years old – no upper age limit. Families welcome! \nContact Susan Ballinger if you have any questions.  susan@cdlandtrust.org \nFor more information and to register click here. \n

SUMMARY:Comparing and Contrasting Killer Whales in the Salish Sea
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nOrca whales are an iconic species of the Pacific Northwest and in Washington’s inland waters we are lucky to have two distinct populations as our neighbors: the endangered fish-eating Southern Resident killer whales and the thriving mammal-eating Bigg’s killer whales. \nn this online presentation\, Monika Wieland Shields—co-founder and director of the nonprofit Orca Behavior Institute based on San Juan Island—will cover the natural history of both of these unique populations\, introducing you to their unique characteristics and life histories. \nIn recent decades\, as we’ve gained a new appreciation for what are really two different cultures of killer whale\, we have also learned about what it takes to live alongside a top predator in the increasingly-urbanized Salish Sea. By comparing and contrasting the trajectories of these two populations\, Monika will share what conservation lessons we’ve learned and what it will take to ensure that both populations are able to survive into the future. \nMonika is a biologist\, wildlife photographer and author of the 2019 book Endangered Orcas: The Story of the Southern Residents. She has a passion for community science and connecting people to whales\, working to combine research and storytelling in education and advocacy efforts on behalf of the orcas of the Salish Sea. \nIf you can’t make this specific date or time\, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the class on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time after the program. \nTo register or for more information click here. \n

SUMMARY:Grizzly Bears: Guardians of the Wilderness (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nCost: $10 \nGrizzly bears\, one of North America’s most iconic wildlife species\, once roamed across half the continent. Today\, their range and numbers are much diminished. They are gone from 25 percent of their former territory in Canada and 94 percent in the Lower 48 states. And they are no longer found at all in the southern part of their original range\, which once extended all the way to central Mexico. \nIn 1975\, grizzly bears in the Lower 48 states were listed under the newly minted U.S. Endangered Species Act. The following decades saw increased protections implemented in most other jurisdictions. Yet despite making slow but steady gains in some places\, grizzlies continue to lose ground in others. Their uneven recovery leaves wildlife managers and communities asking questions like: Why is it so hard for grizzlies to survive in the modern world? And what do we lose when they disappear from the landscape? \nFrances Backhouse is a Vancouver Island-based journalist and author who writes about nature and human history\, often exploring their intersections in a conservation context. For this unique online program\, she will discuss the challenges grizzly bears face\, their vital contributions to ecosystem health and how they can serve as guardians of the wilderness. \nAnd we’re excited to welcome Joe Scott from Conservation Northwest to the conversation to provide us with a timely update on the on-again\, off-again Grizzly Bear Reintroduction efforts in the North Cascades. Joe leads Conservation Northwest’s trans-boundary grizzly bear recovery and habitat connectivity efforts in the North Cascades and southwestern BC\, working collaboratively with several First Nations\, research biologists\, governments and other conservation organizations. \nAudience members will have the opportunity to ask questions of both speakers during the final segment of the program. \nIf you can’t make this specific date or time\, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the class on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time after the program. \nFor more information or to register click here.

SUMMARY:Bird Fest Recon Trip at Stormy Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Location: Stormy Preserve \nJoin Cascadia Conservation District’s Mark Ingman and Chelan-Douglas Land Trust’s Susan Ballinger to explore a variety of Entiat watershed bird habitats including recently restored riverside forests and shrubby creeks. We’ll walk off-trail for ½-mile along the Entiat River where over 60 species of birds use the riverside forest habitat during May. We hope to see resident American dipper\, belted kingfisher\, common merganser\, and dozens of just-arrived migrant songbirds\, especially flycatchers\, warblers\, and vireos. We will then drive a few miles on a dirt USFS road to explore Potato Creek that experienced the 2018 Cougar Creek Fire. The fire moved through the Entiat watershed in 33 days burning over 135\,000 acres and 20% of the Potato Creek watershed. The mid-high severity fire left behind a charred landscape but also many snags for bird habitat. Now five years later\, through a large investment from area restoration partners such as the USFS\, Cascadia CD\, Trout Unlimited and Cascade Fisheries\, Potato Creek is vibrant and green—replete with birds\, wildlife\, and even more water! Come learn more about how beaver dams are accelerating the rate of post fire recovery and how they help form a containment line to future fires. \nTo REGISTER CLICK HERE \nContact Susan Ballinger if you have any questions. susan@cdlandtrust.org.
