DESCRIPTION:Location: Lower Castle Rock \nEven land that’s been severely disturbed can provide a home for rare wildflowers if we give it enough care and attention. On this outing\, join CDLT Conservation Fellow\, Susan Ballinger and Elisa Lopez to view the Fuzzy-tongue Penstemon in the wild in early May. We will learn a little bit about the process of caring for a highly disturbed area\, and how the pandemic led to the local discovery of this rare plant. After the guided hike\, participants are welcome to extend their walk and explore the trails on their own. \nRegistration required. This <1-mile round trip walk will last about 1 hour and participants can join us at either 4:30 or 5:30 PM. All spots for 4:30pm have filled. Limited to 10 participants per time slot. SUMMARY:Leavenworth Firefighter Challenge
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club \nEvery year thousands of Firefighters protect communities from wildland fires. We are dedicated individuals working together to defend life and property from fire’s potential devastation. Variable\, rugged terrain and dangerous conditions require knowledge\, strength and cooperation. \nThe Leavenworth Firefighter Challenge serves as an opportunity for Firefighters to connect with our Brothers and Sisters from around the region. The race is an opportunity to rep our crews and departments; to demonstrate that we are ready for the coming season; and to share stories over beers and around the fire. \nCutting through the scenic foothills of the Cascades\, the course climbs a grueling 1\,665 vertical feet over 6.2 miles (10k) of rugged terrain. The Leavenworth Firefighter Challenge will test the physical and mental endurance of the toughest competitors. \nCompetitors wear full Wildland PPE throughout the race and are divided into three divisions: \n\nThe Probie Division: Full PPE\, except your choice of footwear.\nThe Arduous Division: Full PPE including NFPA 1977 compliant wildland boots and 25lbs of weight\nThe Sawyer Division: Full PPE including a saw. A chance for the truly tough to show their grit by shouldering a chainsaw throughout the entire course.\n\nThe race is followed by a party at Ski Hill with a beer garden\, food booths\, and live music. \nThe Leavenworth Firefighter Challenge is hosted by Chelan County Fire District #3 Firefighters. We are a combination department serving Leavenworth and the Upper Wenatchee Valley through response to both structure and wildland fire\, EMS\, and technical outdoor rescue. \nIn addition to supporting the efforts of local volunteers\, the Challenge benefits firefighters everywhere as we have partnered with the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. For over 25 years\, the Wildland Firefighter Foundation has assisted the families of firefighters who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty and supported those with physical and emotional injuries on the long road to recovery. \nWe hope you join us a weekend of fun\, sweat\, beer\, food\, and music with the men and women of the fire service.

SUMMARY:Wolves in Washington
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nWolves are a keystone predator that plays a valuable and important role in the health of our ecosystems. After nearly being eradicated in the early 1900s\, the gray wolf (Canis lupus)\, a native Washington species\, has naturally returned to our state. A wolf pack with pups was confirmed in July 2008 in western Okanogan and northern Chelan counties and represented the first fully documented breeding by wolves in the state since the 1930s! Since then\, the state’s wolf population has increased at an average rate of around 25% every year – 16% in 2021 – and many other wolf packs have been confirmed. \nIn the latest annual census of wolves in Washington State\, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) reports the following good news for wolf recovery: \n\nWashington has a minimum of 206 wolves in the state at the end of 2021\, compared to 178 in 2020\, and 19 breeding pairs in 2021\, compared to 16 in 2020.\nFour new wolf packs were formed\, including a new one in the North Cascades south of Lake Chelan (Shady Pass).\nThere are four breeding pairs in the North Cascades recovery region for two years in a row\, which is an important step toward meeting recovery goals.\nEvidence from a collared wolf of consistent residency in the South Cascades may indicate or lead to an established pack this year.\n\nJoin us for a Zoom presentation with biologists from the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Wolf Advisory Group. They will share an overview of the status of wolves in the state\, provide updates on current wolf packs and take questions too. \nParticipants will learn how they can stay updated\, get involved\, and how the Washington Wolf Advisory Group is working to promote equitable\, inclusive\, and respectful dialogue and decision-making among diverse people to foster durable peace by transforming the root causes of social conflict and providing high quality recommendations on wolf recovery\, conservation\, and management. \nTo learn more information and to register click here.

Lewis traces his roots to the Wenatchi band. Our main task will be basic trail maintenance (clearing drainage dips) along mountain bike trails.  Volunteers can expect a light to moderate work party\, walking a total distance of 2 miles with 300 feet elevation gain. Most volunteers will be working with hand tools such as hoes and McLeods. Kids are welcome! We may also see blooming balsamroot\, desert-parsleys\, serviceberry\, pussytoes\, brodiaea\, lupine\, springbeauty\, blue-eyed Mary\, yellow bells\, waterleaf\, prairie-star\, Oregon grape\, bluebells\, phlox\, currant\, and more. No botanical experience needed; we will bring a plant list in case anyone is interested. We can walk and talk about plants\, restoration\, weed control\, and/or whatever the people are interested in.
