Doors open at 6:30 p.m.\, start at 7:00 p.m. \nhttps://www.wnps.org/wv-events/calendar/1782 \nThis presentation by Dr. David G. James will provide the results of recent research on the migration biology of monarchs in the Pacific Northwest\, as well as insights into the ability of monarchs to adapt to a warming climate. Despite reports to the contrary\, the monarch does not face irretrievable doom and gloom. Instead\, it is a shining example of how an insect can alter its biology to better suit a changing environment.  Threats do exist to monarch survival (pesticides\, host plant loss\, parasites) however\, none are overwhelming. A holistic view of monarch biology and ecology better describes the ability of this species to persist and show resilience.

Yoga Basics is slower-paced and focuses on developing a clear and safe alignment of fundamental postures. Claire is a watercolorist par excellence\, educator\, community scientist\, and adventurer. Her work captures the drama\, serenity\, and chromatic wonder of the natural world. \nShe first started making her distinctive “memory pages”–a combination of nature journaling\, mini paintings\, color swatches\, and candid notes–over five years ago. They quickly became her favorite painting practice and now she wants to share it with you! \nWhether you are on the trail or at home enjoying photos of a recent adventure\, Claire will share her approach to creating quick sketches\, page layout\, and experimenting with color to quickly record what we experience\, see\, and feel while exploring nature. \nBy painting along with Claire during this participatory workshop\, you’ll learn the techniques to create a simple yet captivating visual record of your outdoor adventures\, dripping with color. \nClaire Giordano is an environmental artist\, writer\, and educator creatively exploring the interwoven patterns of people\, place\, and climate change. DESCRIPTION:This fun\, informative\, guided snowshoe trek leaves from the Mission Ridge Base Area and heads up to the Midway Lodge. The pace of each trek is fitted to the group’s interests and abilities. Great for first-time snowshoers and those looking for a unique\, non-skiing\, on-snow experience. Twilight Snowshoe Treks are approximately 1.5 miles in length\, with an elevation gain of roughly 550 feet\, and take approximately 2 hrs. \nSuggested Gear: Boots that fit well and offer good ankle support\, goggles\, gloves\, a winter hat\, coat\, snow pants & headlamp. \nCreature Comforts if you have them: backpack\, gaiters\, and facemask. \nGroups will meet at 4:30 PM in front of the Hampton Lodge Rental/Retail Shop and will depart promptly at 5:00 PM. \nPrice \n$10 to register\, $30 to rent snowshoes. \nHow To Purchase \nTours are available by reservation every Friday and Saturday evening from January 6th to February 25th.

DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by North Cascades Institute \nClass Tuition: $10 \nTo register for this event click here. \nJoin award winning author and photographer Paul Bannick on an intimate visual exploration of the life history of the Snowy Owl\, based upon his 2020 book\, Snowy Owl: A Visual Natural History. \nThrough dozens of never-before-published images of the “Arctic Owl”\, Paul will help us understand how they survive\, breed and live alongside other wildlife on the Arctic tundra and in wintering areas further south. He will also look at how they compare to other North American Owls and what we can do to help them thrive. \nPaul’s startling photographs illustrate behaviors\, such as courtship displays\, that are heretofore only available as illustrations elsewhere. These images are complemented by decades of first-hand experience with these birds during all seasons of the year and reflect the latest science.

Dr. Ralph Dawes\, Earth Sciences professor at Wenatchee Valley College\, will talk about the latest insights on volcanics in the Wenatchee area: The Wenatchee Pinnacles: Wenatchee’s Own Volcanic Rocks. \nThe Wenatchee Pinnacles are volcanic rock protrusions on the hillsides west of Wenatchee\, including: Saddle Rock\, Castle Rock\, Old Butte\, the Wenatchee Dome\, and Rooster Comb. Over a century of controversy continues over their rock types\, ages\, origins\, their role in the gold deposits in the Wenatchee Gold Belt mining district and tectonic history of the area. \nYou can attend in-person at the Museum. Filming more than 60 species of bees\, from Britain’s largest\nbumblebees to scissor bees\, which are the size of a mosquito\, Dohrn observes how differences in behavior set different species apart from each other. DESCRIPTION:Yoga Basics with Dianne \nMondays and Wednesdays at 10 am at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center for the month of February. \nYou may choose to take the class one or two days per week.  One day\, either Monday or Wednesday\, is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.  Class on both Monday and Wednesday is $85 for members and $110 for non-members. \nImprove your flexibility\, balance\, strength\, and relaxation using basic yoga postures and breathing techniques. \nDianne McCammon will lead this small\, adults-only yoga series. Yoga Basics is slower-paced and focuses on developing a clear and safe alignment of fundamental postures. This series of classes is designed for beginners\, those recovering from injury or anyone wanting to refine their current practice. Come learn\, play\, and maybe even break a sweat in a supportive environment. All bodies are welcome. \nDianne is certified at the 500-hour level with Yoga Alliance and is a Registered Yoga Therapist with International Association of Yoga Therapists. \nPlease bring your mat and water. DESCRIPTION:This fun\, informative\, guided snowshoe trek leaves from the Mission Ridge Base Area and heads up to the Midway Lodge. The pace of each trek is fitted to the group’s interests and abilities. Great for first-time snowshoers and those looking for a unique\, non-skiing\, on-snow experience. Twilight Snowshoe Treks are approximately 1.5 miles in length\, with an elevation gain of roughly 550 feet\, and take approximately 2 hrs. \nSuggested Gear: Boots that fit well and offer good ankle support\, goggles\, gloves\, a winter hat\, coat\, snow pants & headlamp. \nCreature Comforts if you have them: backpack\, gaiters\, and facemask. \nGroups will meet at 4:30 PM in front of the Hampton Lodge Rental/Retail Shop and will depart promptly at 5:00 PM. \nPrice \n$10 to register\, $30 to rent snowshoes. \nHow To Purchase \nTours are available by reservation every Friday and Saturday evening from January 6th to February 25th.
