DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Wenatchee River Institute \nTuesday\, December 13th from 7-8pm @ WRI’s Red Barn              \nJoin WRI and the Washington Native Plant Society for a Red Barn Event! You’ll learn more about the Wenatchee Mountains\, the geology of the area\, and some special plants that call this place home. Join us in person in the Red Barn or virtually via Zoom. \nThe Wenatchee Mountains contain\, in a relatively small area\, a diverse mix of igneous\, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. These mountains are also one of the three main centers of endemic plants in Washington state. These geologic and floral diversities are related in several ways. In particular\, the uncommon presence of ultramafic soils\, derived from metamorphic rocks created deep in the earth’s crust\, including serpentinite\, has led to strangely beautiful landscapes and plant species specially adapted to these toxic soils. \nTED ALWAY is a Peshastin resident\, orchardist and\, until recently\, owner of Derby Canyon Natives. He is fond of most plants and\, more recently\, rocks. \nThis is a FREE event with a donation basket at door.\nDoors open at 6:30pm for a community social with beer and wine available for purchase. You probably noticed that there are tons of mountains to climb\, rivers that flow generously\, sagebrush as far as the eye can see\, and plentiful wildlife. What you may have not noticed while traveling here are three federally-listed plants (Eriogonum codium\, Sidalcea oregana var. calva\, and Hackelia venusta) under the Endangered Species Act. This is understandable because these endemic plants occur only in Central Washington and some occupy less than a couple hundred acres. Tara Callaway\, the Shrub Steppe Zone Supervisor for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service)\, will present on the status of those species. Her talk will explore some of the threats facing each species and how the Service and partners have begun to address them. She will also cover some new and exciting research that may help guide future recovery actions and activities.

DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Chelan Douglas Land Trust \nJoin us for an afternoon of planting native shrubs at the new\, not-yet-open-to-the-public Kenzie’s Landing trailhead. Volunteers can expect moderate work and walking 0.25 mile from the parking area to the planting location along a gravel road. Planting will require digging and bending to plant shrubs while standing on uneven surfaces – a few of the planting spots are on a steep hillside. This is a great activity for kids! Please bring work gloves\, water\, layers of clothing appropriate for the weather on site\, close-toed shoes\, and a planting tool if you have a favorite. The Land Trust will bring a first aid kit\, tools\, snacks\, and hot beverages. DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nJoin us online for a FREE poetry reading with Washington State’s Poet Laureate Rena Priest\, the first Indigenous poet laureate of our Evergreen State. \nPriest is a member of the Lhaq’temish (Lummi) Nation\, and she earned degrees from Western Washington University and Sarah Lawrence College. Her literary debut\, Patriarchy Blues\, was honored with a 2018 American Book Award\, and her second collection\, Sublime Subliminal\, was published as the finalist for the Floating Bridge Press Chapbook Award. \nIn her poems you will find multiple perspectives\, a full suite of linguistic skills\, and an incredible blend of wit\, sentiment\, perceptivity and boldness. Hearing her work read aloud offers insights into our relationship with the natural world\, compassion with the human experience\, humorous takes on life and her perspective as a member of Lummi Nation. \nFor this special engagement\, in addition to hearing Priest’s poetry\, we will be treated to a short workshop on the possibilities that poetry opens up. SUMMARY:Horse Lake Trail Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Chelan Douglas Land Trust \nJoin us for trail maintenance at Horse Lake Reserve. We will be clearing drainages and water bars along selected trails at Horse Lake. This is our annual “preparing the trails for winter” maintenance. The event involves a nice 2-mile hike with a grubbing tool. We are happy to have both experienced and new volunteers. Most volunteer work can be adapted to include everyone. Please inquire at the contact below about possible adaptations to the work. \nEveryone’s safety is our top priority at these events. DESCRIPTION:Free entrance to National Parks to honor Veterans Day. \nMany national parks have direct connections to the American military—there are dozens of battlefields\, military parks\, and historic sites that commemorate and honor the service of American veterans. In addition\, every national park is part of our collective identity that defines who we are and where we came from as a nation. They are tactile reminders of the values\, the ideals\, and the freedoms that our veterans protect. \nThe majestic landscapes\, natural wonders\, and patriotic icons that we cherish as a society have also inspired military members through the years. The Grand Canyon\, Mount Rushmore\, the USS Arizona Memorial\, and the Statue of Liberty are just a few of the national parks that have served as reminders of home to those stationed abroad. On Veterans Day\, or any day\, honor those who have served and sacrificed for our country with a visit to a national park. \nThe National Park Service invites all visitors to remember our veterans by visiting any National Park Service site for free on Veterans Day (November 11). Find tips to recreate responsibly while you visit!

SUMMARY:Success and Tragedy on Howse peak: The last climb of David Lama\, Hansjorg Auer\, and Jess Roskelley
DESCRIPTION:Location: Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center \nOn April 16\, 2019\, three climbers went missing on Howse Peak in the Canadian Rockies. Two had received at least one prestigious Piolet d’Or international mountaineering award\, and the third nominated multiple times. All were members of the elite North Face athlete team. Early the next morning\, the Canadian Park service dispatched a search and rescue helicopter. They spotted evidence of a tragedy in avalanche debris at the base of the east face. Within forty-eight hours\, the public information officer at Lake Louise had received over 700 media inquiries from countries around the world. Five days later\, the men were recovered. This is the story of the last climb of Austrians David Lama and Hansjorg Auer\, and American Jess Roskelley. \nThis event is free to the public but limited to 80 people. SUMMARY:Horse Lake Restoration Planting
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Chelan Douglas Land Trust \nJoin us for an afternoon of planting native grasses at Horse Lake Reserve. Volunteers can expect light/moderate work and walking 0.5 mile from the parking area to the planting location\, elevation change of 100 feet (an optional planting location is 1-1.5 miles with an elevation change of 200-250 feet). The walk to the site is about half a mile along a dirt road (may be muddy). Planting will require digging and bending to plant grass plugs. This is a great activity for kids! Please bring a face mask if you plan to carpool\, work gloves\, water\, layers of clothing appropriate for the weather on site (Horse Lake can get windy!)\, close-toed shoes\, and a planting tool if you have a favorite. The Land Trust will bring a first aid kit\, tools\, snacks\, and hot beverages. If you have dietary restrictions\, please plan to bring your own snacks. \nWe are aiming to get 30-40 people at this event! Please RSVP by noon the day before. \nClick here to register for the event.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center on Thursday\, November 3 at 7 PM as we partner with the National Parks Conservation Association for our Environmental Film and Speaker Series viewing “Finding Gulo”. This film follows a backcountry ski guide & field biologist who set out to document an elusive population of wolverines. This short film celebrates the power of community science to protect endangered wildlife in the face of climate change. \nOur 21st annual Environmental Film & Speaker Series explores topics important to our community by connecting us to the world around us\, raising awareness of issues impacting the environment upon which we all depend\, and identifying actions our community can take to improve and sustain our Valley. These family-friendly films are offered by donation to the Museum. There are two viewing options\, please register below to attend in-person or to participate virtually through the livestream.
