DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Chelan Douglas Land Trust \nJoin us for an afternoon of planting native shrubs at the new\, not-yet-open-to-the-public Kenzie’s Landing trailhead. Volunteers can expect moderate work and walking 0.25 mile from the parking area to the planting location along a gravel road. Planting will require digging and bending to plant shrubs while standing on uneven surfaces – a few of the planting spots are on a steep hillside. This is a great activity for kids! Please bring work gloves\, water\, layers of clothing appropriate for the weather on site\, close-toed shoes\, and a planting tool if you have a favorite. The Land Trust will bring a first aid kit\, tools\, snacks\, and hot beverages. DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nJoin us online for a FREE poetry reading with Washington State’s Poet Laureate Rena Priest\, the first Indigenous poet laureate of our Evergreen State. \nPriest is a member of the Lhaq’temish (Lummi) Nation\, and she earned degrees from Western Washington University and Sarah Lawrence College. Her literary debut\, Patriarchy Blues\, was honored with a 2018 American Book Award\, and her second collection\, Sublime Subliminal\, was published as the finalist for the Floating Bridge Press Chapbook Award. \nIn her poems you will find multiple perspectives\, a full suite of linguistic skills\, and an incredible blend of wit\, sentiment\, perceptivity and boldness. Hearing her work read aloud offers insights into our relationship with the natural world\, compassion with the human experience\, humorous takes on life and her perspective as a member of Lummi Nation. \nFor this special engagement\, in addition to hearing Priest’s poetry\, we will be treated to a short workshop on the possibilities that poetry opens up. The Grand Canyon\, Mount Rushmore\, the USS Arizona Memorial\, and the Statue of Liberty are just a few of the national parks that have served as reminders of home to those stationed abroad. SUMMARY:Success and Tragedy on Howse peak: The last climb of David Lama\, Hansjorg Auer\, and Jess Roskelley
DESCRIPTION:Location: Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center \nOn April 16\, 2019\, three climbers went missing on Howse Peak in the Canadian Rockies. Two had received at least one prestigious Piolet d’Or international mountaineering award\, and the third nominated multiple times. All were members of the elite North Face athlete team. Early the next morning\, the Canadian Park service dispatched a search and rescue helicopter. They spotted evidence of a tragedy in avalanche debris at the base of the east face. Within forty-eight hours\, the public information officer at Lake Louise had received over 700 media inquiries from countries around the world. Five days later\, the men were recovered. This is the story of the last climb of Austrians David Lama and Hansjorg Auer\, and American Jess Roskelley. \nThis event is free to the public but limited to 80 people. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Pybus University with NCW Dahlia Society \nDahlias grow from tubers that are planted a few inches below the surface of the garden. Because of this\, tubers rarely survive our harsh winters if they are left in the ground at the end of the season. Although some growers purchase new tubers each year\, most people prefer to dig up this year’s crop in the fall\, saving the tubers for the next year. DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club\n\nCombining with local SUP group to make this a great community paddling tradition\nBring a costume (witch & warlock focus)\, your boat\, and some Halloween spirit!! SUPs\, kayaks\, canoes and rowing shells are all welcome!\nWe’ll meet at the swim/boat launch area of Confluence State Park at 2:00pm and paddle down to Pybus Market. A WRPC boat trailer will be available at Pybus to help with boat shuttles back to CSP. Donuts and hot chocolate provided by the WRPC at Pybus.\nThis is a great chance to have the Wenatchee paddling community meet & mingle and have some (spooky) fun together! Invite your friends!! Costumes are *highly* encouraged! We’ll have a few extra witches hats if you forget yours.\nFamily and friends event.
