SUMMARY:A Climate Scientist's Case for Hope & Healing in a Divided World
DESCRIPTION:A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World \nInstructor: Katharine Hayhoe \nClass Tuition: $10 \nTo register click here. \nIn her new book Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World\, Katharine Hayhoe demonstrates that whether you’re a parent or a person of faith\, a beach-goer or a dedicated foodie\, climate change affects someone or something you already care about. While others offer doomsday scenarios and point fingers of blame\, Hayhoe approaches this topic with optimism and inclusivity. She argues that climate action isn’t about being a certain type of person or voting a certain way. It’s about connecting the values we already have\, to act for our future. \nA leading expert on the science\, impacts\, and communication of climate change\, Hayhoe has been profiled in The New York Times\, the Washington Post\, People\, and Rolling Stone\, and her TED Talk titled “The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it” has been viewed almost 4 million times. She gives nearly a hundred talks a year to audiences ranging from corporate symposiums\, top-tier universities\, and global climate summits to local churches\, schools\, and city council meetings. \nSaving Us is the result of thousands of conversations she’s had with people from all walks of life\, from the oil and gas tycoon who insists “we’re not the bad guys” to the college instructor angry that “the EPA is just making all of this up to take away my wood-burning stove” to the NASA scientist frustrated that “my friends don’t see it like I do.” Drawing equally from interdisciplinary research and personal stories\, Hayhoe shows how small conversations can have astonishing results. Saving Us shows readers how each of us has a role to play in changing the world. \nKatharine Hayhoe is a climate scientist and chief scientist for The Nature Conservancy. She has been named a United Nations Champion of the Earth and one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People\, and was a lead author for the U.S. Second\, Third\, and Fourth National Climate Assessments.

SUMMARY:Planting Party!
DESCRIPTION:Join CDLT\, Team Naturaleza\, and the City of Wenatchee for Make a Difference Day at Saddle Rock\, Saturday\, October 22\, from 9 am until 3 pm. We will be planting nearly 2\,000 native grasses\, wildflowers\, shrubs\, and trees around Saddle Rock. The work will involve hiking to various planting locations along the main trail/road\, using a shovel to dig a hole\, then planting small to medium-sized plants. We will pre-drill some of the larger holes when possible. Much of the planting will be done on uneven ground\, though some can be done from the graveled road. Please leave pets at home\, and we recommend not to bring small children (see soil content note at the end). \nCDLT will provide lunch at noon – delicious tacos from La Tortuga Loca. You will have an option between chicken or veggie tacos\, plus rice and beans. If you have dietary restrictions\, we recommend bringing your own lunch in case this doesn’t meet your needs. Please make sure to bring close-toed\, sturdy shoes\, long pants\, water\, snacks\, garden/work gloves that can be washed\, and a shovel if you have it. \nSoil/Rock Content Note: Saddle Rock Natural Area contains naturally high levels of arsenic in some areas the soil and bedrock. Even after removing mining waste\, there are natural hot spots for arsenic on site that have been meticulously mapped\, which we will avoid planting into. Your safety is important to us. To provide extra precautions\, we will have extra work gloves\, disposable masks\, and washing stations for use at the Make a Difference Day event. We suggest people wash their hands at the washing stations before eating\, and after the event: wash clothes\, rinse off boots\, and shower. You can read more about arsenic by clicking on this CDC website link. \nFor more information click here

SUMMARY:Envr. Film Series: Plant Rich Diet Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center \nJoin the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center on Thursday\, October 13 at 7 PM as we partner with Wenatchee Confluence Rotary Club for our Environmental Film and Speaker Series for a presentation and panel discussion about how choosing plant-rich diets can make a real and immediate impact in reducing greenhouse gas emissions\, deforestation\, biodiversity loss\, soil degradation\, and air and water pollution. It can even address the growing problems of antibiotic resistance\, future pandemics\, and chronic illnesses. The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group Plant-Rich Diet Task Force takes us on a surprising journey to learn how what’s on our plates can make a positive difference for our personal and planetary health. The presentation will be followed by a panel of local experts to help deepen our understanding and explain how to participate in the 15 Day Plant-Rich Diet Challenge. Enter a free drawing for a plant-based cookbook and enjoy a plant-based tasting bar! \nOur 21st annual Environmental Film & Speaker Series explores topics important to our community by connecting us to the world around us\, raising awareness of issues impacting the environment upon which we all depend\, and identifying actions our community can take to impove and sustain our Valley. These family-friendly films are offered by donation to the Museum. There are two viewing options\, please register below to attend in-person or to participate vitrually through the livestream. For the in-person participants there will be a no-host bar\, free popcorn\, and treats. \nREGISTER HERE to attend in-person \n\nREGISTER HERE for the livestream

She pays homage to them through her art\, working in many different media\, each revealing different aspects of these stalwart companions: crisp lines\, imposing silhouettes\, and the subtle–or sometimes brilliant—hues of foliage. Hashimoto also delves into the process of creating art\, discussing the mediums she used in the featured pieces and the reasons she chose them\, as well as sidebars with tips and techniques. \nAs in her popular books Colors of the West and Birds of the West\, in her new volume Hashimoto emphasizes her personal experiences with nature\, telling stories about her encounters with trees everywhere from her backyard to national parks and forests throughout the West. She focuses primarily on native trees\, rather than cultivars\, with a special interest in 45 major species found across the region\, ranging from the stately Coast redwoods to the diminutive but distinctive Fishhook Barrel Cactus. And the Fall colors of the trees around the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center are one of her greatest inspirations! \nTo complement her in-person events related to the release of the book (including an October 16 event at Village Books in Bellingham)\, Molly will share her latest work with us in an exclusive online presentation. Participants will get to hear about the process of creating the book\, learn about her painting techniques through a live demonstration and hear personal reflections about her process and experience as a professional artist. \nRooted in place\, trees offer endless opportunities for observation\, admiration\, relaxation\, and inspiration. Trees of the West invites us to pause and appreciate these sentinels in all their quiet glory. \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:It’s all about the Timing\, Topography and [Rock] Type
DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Erratics\, Ice Age Floods Institute’s next program will be on Tuesday\, October 11 at 7:00 PM at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center. Brent Cunderla\, long-time Erratics’ president\, will discuss “It’s all about the Timing\, Topography and [Rock] Type.”Timing of the Pleistocene Cordilleran Ice Sheet with topography (Purcell Trench in northern Idaho\, and the Okanogan Valley) allowed blockage-forming glacial lakes. Ice dams created Glacial Lakes Missoula and Columbia. Break-up of ice dams caused lake flood waters to surge across eastern and central Washington to the Pacific Ocean\, in two to three days\, possibly 100 times over a few thousand years. The nature in which the basalt bedrock and deep loess soils were then eroded created the unique landscapes we see today in eastern Washington.Brent will highlight some of the Ice Age Floods pathways in north-central Washington\, emphasizing the Grand and Moses coulees and the Columbia Valley north of Wenatchee.  This is a bi-modal meeting. You can attend in-person at the Museum. If so\, please wear a mask to protect yourself and others. OR\, you can participate via a Zoom link on your computer at home:Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84812873290Passcode: erraticswebinar ID: 84812873290Please sign in at 7:00 PM\, October 11!

SUMMARY:National Geographic LIVE
DESCRIPTION:National Geographic LIVE\nSpeaker Series featuring Steve Winter\n\nImmersive storytelling and unforgettable imagery. Hear behind-the-scenes stories straight from National Geographic’s photographers\, scientists\, filmmakers\, and adventurers live on stage.\n\nTuesday\, October 4th\, 7:30pm\nTickets: $24 | $29 | $34 (Student/Senior Discounts Available)\n\nLocally sponsored by Martha Locke\n\nON THE TRAIL OF BIG CATS\nFrom trekking India’s Himalayas in search of rare snow leopards and stalking the elusive jaguar through Latin American jungles to chronicling the nocturnal activities of the “American lion” or cougar\, award-winning photographer Steve Winter ventures far and wide to come face-to-face with his subjects. This is no easy task: many big cat species are in danger of extinction\, so they have good reason to avoid humans. Endangered\, wild\, and unpredictable\, caution is required in the presence of these felines\, and negotiating their habitats can be dangerous. Winter has been charged by rhinos and stuck in quicksand. He’s had mishaps with remote-controlled cameras and captured more than his share of hikers with his camera trap on a Southern California hillside before catching his memorable shot of a cougar under the iconic “Hollywood” sign. Throughout it all\, Winter’s mission is to share the beauty of big cats and work to save them.\n\nSTEVE WINTER\nSteve Winter has been stalked by jaguars in Brazil\, charged by a grizzly in Siberia\, and trapped in quicksand in the world’s largest tiger reserve in Myanmar. He’s flown over erupting volcanoes and visited isolated villages where residents had never before seen a blond foreigner—or a camera.\nGrowing up in Indiana\, Winter dreamed of traveling the world as a photographer for National Geographic. His first camera was a gift from his father on his seventh birthday. Over the next few years\, Winter’s dad taught him the basics of photography.\nAfter graduating from the Academy of Art and the University of San Francisco\, Winter signed on as a photojournalist for Black Star Photo Agency. Since then\, he has produced stories for National Geographic\, GEO\, Time\, Newsweek\, Fortune\, Audubon\, Smithsonian\, Scientific American\, and Stern. His nonprofit and commercial clients include African Parks\, Wildlife Conservation Society\, Panthera\, UNICEF\, and Merck Pharmaceuticals.\nIn 1991\, Winter began shooting for National Geographic. Among the many subjects he has covered for National Geographic magazine are including life along Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River\, captive tigers in the United States\, the nature of Cuba\, and\, of course\, big cats—including jaguars\, snow leopards\, tigers\, cougars\, and leopards. He has worked on three shows on big cats for Nat Geo WILD and published the National Geographic book Tigers Forever: Saving the World’s Most Endangered Big Cat.\nWinter lives with his wife\, two dogs\, and a not-so-big cat named Punky in Hoboken\, New Jersey.\n\nFor more information click here.
