SUMMARY:Envr. Film Series: Plant Rich Diet Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center \nJoin the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center on Thursday\, October 13 at 7 PM as we partner with Wenatchee Confluence Rotary Club for our Environmental Film and Speaker Series for a presentation and panel discussion about how choosing plant-rich diets can make a real and immediate impact in reducing greenhouse gas emissions\, deforestation\, biodiversity loss\, soil degradation\, and air and water pollution. It can even address the growing problems of antibiotic resistance\, future pandemics\, and chronic illnesses. The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group Plant-Rich Diet Task Force takes us on a surprising journey to learn how what’s on our plates can make a positive difference for our personal and planetary health. The presentation will be followed by a panel of local experts to help deepen our understanding and explain how to participate in the 15 Day Plant-Rich Diet Challenge. Enter a free drawing for a plant-based cookbook and enjoy a plant-based tasting bar! \nOur 21st annual Environmental Film & Speaker Series explores topics important to our community by connecting us to the world around us\, raising awareness of issues impacting the environment upon which we all depend\, and identifying actions our community can take to impove and sustain our Valley. These family-friendly films are offered by donation to the Museum. There are two viewing options\, please register below to attend in-person or to participate vitrually through the livestream. For the in-person participants there will be a no-host bar\, free popcorn\, and treats. \nREGISTER HERE to attend in-person \n\nREGISTER HERE for the livestream

SUMMARY:History of W.T. Clark's Highline Canal
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center \nLocation of event: The Historic Wells House \nIn the fall of 1901 W.T. Clark was asked to come to Wenatchee to build a gravity flow irrigation canal.  From Dryden\, the water flowed to Sunnyslope\, Wenatchee and Rock Island as well as across the Columbia River bridge to East Wenatchee.  It flowed for 34 miles without one single pump.  The Highline Canal was finished in 1903 and is still in use today. \nWaylon Marshall and Alice Meyer\, both from the Wenatchee Reclamation District\, will be at the Wells House on October 12 to talk about the history of the canal that was truly a lifesaver to orchardists then and now. \nThis one-hour talk starts at 6:30 and the cost is $10. \nPlease register here.

SUMMARY:(Online) Trees of the West with Molly Hashimoto
DESCRIPTION:Class Tuition: $10 \nThis event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nArtist and long-time Institute instructor Molly Hashimoto has appreciated trees all her life—they have shaped her as a hiker\, outdoors lover\, gardener\, traveler\, and artist. She pays homage to them through her art\, working in many different media\, each revealing different aspects of these stalwart companions: crisp lines\, imposing silhouettes\, and the subtle–or sometimes brilliant—hues of foliage. Hashimoto also delves into the process of creating art\, discussing the mediums she used in the featured pieces and the reasons she chose them\, as well as sidebars with tips and techniques. \nAs in her popular books Colors of the West and Birds of the West\, in her new volume Hashimoto emphasizes her personal experiences with nature\, telling stories about her encounters with trees everywhere from her backyard to national parks and forests throughout the West. She focuses primarily on native trees\, rather than cultivars\, with a special interest in 45 major species found across the region\, ranging from the stately Coast redwoods to the diminutive but distinctive Fishhook Barrel Cactus. And the Fall colors of the trees around the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center are one of her greatest inspirations! \nTo complement her in-person events related to the release of the book (including an October 16 event at Village Books in Bellingham)\, Molly will share her latest work with us in an exclusive online presentation. Participants will get to hear about the process of creating the book\, learn about her painting techniques through a live demonstration and hear personal reflections about her process and experience as a professional artist. \nRooted in place\, trees offer endless opportunities for observation\, admiration\, relaxation\, and inspiration. Trees of the West invites us to pause and appreciate these sentinels in all their quiet glory. \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:It’s all about the Timing\, Topography and [Rock] Type
DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Erratics\, Ice Age Floods Institute’s next program will be on Tuesday\, October 11 at 7:00 PM at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center. Brent Cunderla\, long-time Erratics’ president\, will discuss “It’s all about the Timing\, Topography and [Rock] Type.”Timing of the Pleistocene Cordilleran Ice Sheet with topography (Purcell Trench in northern Idaho\, and the Okanogan Valley) allowed blockage-forming glacial lakes. Ice dams created Glacial Lakes Missoula and Columbia. Break-up of ice dams caused lake flood waters to surge across eastern and central Washington to the Pacific Ocean\, in two to three days\, possibly 100 times over a few thousand years. The nature in which the basalt bedrock and deep loess soils were then eroded created the unique landscapes we see today in eastern Washington.Brent will highlight some of the Ice Age Floods pathways in north-central Washington\, emphasizing the Grand and Moses coulees and the Columbia Valley north of Wenatchee.  This is a bi-modal meeting. You can attend in-person at the Museum. If so\, please wear a mask to protect yourself and others. OR\, you can participate via a Zoom link on your computer at home:Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84812873290Passcode: erraticswebinar ID: 84812873290Please sign in at 7:00 PM\, October 11!

SUMMARY:National Geographic LIVE
DESCRIPTION:National Geographic LIVE\nSpeaker Series featuring Steve Winter\n\nImmersive storytelling and unforgettable imagery. Hear behind-the-scenes stories straight from National Geographic’s photographers\, scientists\, filmmakers\, and adventurers live on stage.\n\nTuesday\, October 4th\, 7:30pm\nTickets: $24 | $29 | $34 (Student/Senior Discounts Available)\n\nLocally sponsored by Martha Locke\n\nON THE TRAIL OF BIG CATS\nFrom trekking India’s Himalayas in search of rare snow leopards and stalking the elusive jaguar through Latin American jungles to chronicling the nocturnal activities of the “American lion” or cougar\, award-winning photographer Steve Winter ventures far and wide to come face-to-face with his subjects. This is no easy task: many big cat species are in danger of extinction\, so they have good reason to avoid humans. Endangered\, wild\, and unpredictable\, caution is required in the presence of these felines\, and negotiating their habitats can be dangerous. Winter has been charged by rhinos and stuck in quicksand. He’s had mishaps with remote-controlled cameras and captured more than his share of hikers with his camera trap on a Southern California hillside before catching his memorable shot of a cougar under the iconic “Hollywood” sign. Throughout it all\, Winter’s mission is to share the beauty of big cats and work to save them.\n\nSTEVE WINTER\nSteve Winter has been stalked by jaguars in Brazil\, charged by a grizzly in Siberia\, and trapped in quicksand in the world’s largest tiger reserve in Myanmar. He’s flown over erupting volcanoes and visited isolated villages where residents had never before seen a blond foreigner—or a camera.\nGrowing up in Indiana\, Winter dreamed of traveling the world as a photographer for National Geographic. His first camera was a gift from his father on his seventh birthday. Over the next few years\, Winter’s dad taught him the basics of photography.\nAfter graduating from the Academy of Art and the University of San Francisco\, Winter signed on as a photojournalist for Black Star Photo Agency. Since then\, he has produced stories for National Geographic\, GEO\, Time\, Newsweek\, Fortune\, Audubon\, Smithsonian\, Scientific American\, and Stern. His nonprofit and commercial clients include African Parks\, Wildlife Conservation Society\, Panthera\, UNICEF\, and Merck Pharmaceuticals.\nIn 1991\, Winter began shooting for National Geographic. Among the many subjects he has covered for National Geographic magazine are including life along Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River\, captive tigers in the United States\, the nature of Cuba\, and\, of course\, big cats—including jaguars\, snow leopards\, tigers\, cougars\, and leopards. He has worked on three shows on big cats for Nat Geo WILD and published the National Geographic book Tigers Forever: Saving the World’s Most Endangered Big Cat.\nWinter lives with his wife\, two dogs\, and a not-so-big cat named Punky in Hoboken\, New Jersey.\n\nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Red Barn Event: Beautiful Wounds
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, September 28\, 2022\n7:00 pm8:00 pm\n\n\nHYBRID EVENT: WRI’s Red Barn 347 Division Street\, Leavenworth\, WA 98826 or livestream via Zoom\n\nCarved and scoured by catastrophic floods at the end of the most recent ice age\, the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington unfold with rugged beauty and the diversity of their natural features and wildlife habitat\, including braided waterfalls\, sprawling canyons and cinematic palisades. With Beautiful Wounds\, writer/photographer Timothy Connor leads us on a lush photographic journey into the origins and sanctum of one of America’s most enigmatic natural treasures. On one level\, the trek through history and terrain is a deeply personal sojourn to ward off depression in the wake of heartbreak. Yet the broader dimensions capture the light\, texture and wonder of nature as time unfolds in quiet acts of recovery\, pierced by birdsong and the distant howls of coyotes. \nTimothy Connor is a national award-winning journalist and nature photographer based in Spokane. Born at Camp Hanford\, WA in 1956\, Tim was named the outstanding graduate in journalism from Washington State University in 1979. His investigative reporting on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation’s environmental and public health hazards in the early 1980s led to a decade of successful public activism to bring the nation’s nuclear weapons plants under stricter public scrutiny and regulation. He has also been deeply involved in efforts to reform police accountability and to protect vulnerable communities in Washington from air pollution created by mass agricultural burning. \nAs a journalist he has earned multiple regional and national awards from the Society of Professional Journalism for both his print and broadcast reporting. He has also been recognized (2011) by the Washington State Bar Association for a career of excellence in reporting on legal issues. \nPrior to Beautiful Wounds\, he authored (with Major Margaret Witt) “Tell: Love\, Defiance and the Military Trial at the Tipping Point of Gay Rights” (2017)\, the story of Major Witt’s successful legal battle that ultimately resulted in Congressional repeal of the military’s policy of expelling homosexual service members. \nBeautiful Wounds is his fifth book and is being nationally distributed by The Countryman Press\, an imprint of W.W. Norton & Co. \nThis is a FREE event with a donation basket at door.\nDoors open at 6:30pm for a community social with beer and wine available for purchase. The presentation will start at 7:00pm.\nA Book for All Seasons will be at this event to sell Tim’s book.\nAll Red Barn Events are now hybrid\, you may join us in person in the Red Barn or livestream virtually via Zoom. \nAddress: 347 Division Street\, Leavenworth\, WA 98826 \nPlease click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/87804170323\nOr One tap mobile :\nUS: +12532158782\,\,87804170323# or +16699006833\,\,87804170323#\nOr Telephone:\nDial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\nUS: +1 253 215 8782 or +1 669 900 6833 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 669 444 9171 or +1 929 205 6099 or +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 386 347 5053 or +1 564 217 2000 or +1 646 931 3860\nWebinar ID: 878 0417 0323\nInternational numbers available: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kdZF7ltcjS

SUMMARY:Attempting the World Record for Longest Distance Traveled by Hand Cycle
DESCRIPTION:The VID Expedition-Attempting the World Record for Longest Distance Traveled by Hand Cycle \nThere’s a great opportunity coming up on Tuesday\, September 20\, to hear about the VID Expedition. This expedition was started by Michiel Desmet who is from Belgium and has been living with a spinal cord injury for the past 10 years. He is currently attempting to break the world record for the longest distance traveled by hand cycle. His route is more than 4000 miles long (6500 km; 6500 is VID in Roman numerals). He started in Anchorage\, AK in June and plans to finish in Los Angeles\, CA by the end of November. \nHe is currently passing through NCW and will be giving a presentation about his journey at The Mercantile on Tuesday\, September 20\, at 6:30 PM. The Mercantile is located at 14 N Wenatchee Ave. Michiel definitely has an interesting story to tell and unique logistics to manage as he makes this record-breaking attempt. \nThis will be a very informal event and there will likely be time to ask Michiel questions that you have about his experiences\, both on and off the bike. This presentation is free and open to the public.
