Since the 1950s\, geologists have sought to explain why the North Cascades host so many distinct types of rocks with such varied and complex metamorphic history. \nLearn about the people who seek to explain what forces shape the landscape of the past and continue to shape the landscape into the future. These trails are truly spectacular and will allow you to experience the best the desert has to offer\, taking you on a journey through canyon-like gorges\, along the shores of ancient desert lakes and to the base of cascading waterfalls. You will feel like you are in the desert southwest but with a Washington flare. With a distance for everyone\, and the same great support and swag you have come to expect from Run Super Series events\, this is an event you won’t want to miss at this exciting new venue! \nWith a unique cloverleaf design\, our scenic course will allow you to experience the best of the Ancient Lakes area. The larger 25k loop features 3 smaller loops\, each beginning and ending at a common aid station. The 25k loop features about 2\,200’ of rolling up and down\, with no single climb or descent more than 400’. The trails are primarily single track. The first loop will take you to the a spectacular waterfall and then run along the shores of the Ancient Lakes. The green loop will run out to yet another lake and feature a return trip through some canyon like desert terrain. The blue loop will drop you down into the Columbia River Gorge\, and have you run along the river before climbing back out and rolling to the finish line. The 50k will run the 25k course twice and the 50M will run the 25k course three times. The 10k course will run on portions of the red and green loop and will have about 1\,000’ of elevation gain. DESCRIPTION:Introductory Series to Wildlife Tracking \nHosted by Wenatchee River Institute \nEvery time we step outside of our door\, there are myriad stories to be told of the comings and goings of animals in the world\, and one of the oldest human capacities is to read and interpret these stories. The art and science of tracking offers a holistic ecological window into the happenings of the living world around us. \nIn this 3-part series\, you will gain a foundational introduction to the vast world of wildlife tracking. We will explore:\n• The art of inquiry and engaging curiosity in the natural world\n• Basic wildlife foot physiology and morphology\n• Clear print identification\n• Concepts in behavior and wildlife sign interpretation\n• How wildlife interacts with landscapes \nLimit of 30 participants. You can sign up for individual classes or the whole series.\nCost: $15 per class\, $32 (members) whole series\, $40 (non-members) whole series\nREGISTER FOR INDIVIDUAL CLASSES UNDER THE CALENDAR EVENT FOR THAT SPECIFIC DATE. \nEach of the session will be online and last for 75-90 minutes. We will cover three core concepts of wildlife tracking: \nApril 20th – Sign Tracking and Ecology\nIn this final session\, we will look at all the ways that animals leave “tracks” on the landscape that are not just from their feet. Sign tracking involves taking a larger ecological perspective into all of the ways animals go about their daily lives in the world. This practice brings us into the fuller story of the ways that animals use the landscape\, and that the landscape has shaped them. \nEnvironmental educators\, naturalists\, outdoor leaders\, or simply amateur naturalists are who have been interested in reading the stories left behind on the landscape are sure to find this 3-part series fun and engaging. \nInstructor Bio:\nMarcus is a naturalist\, educator\, facilitator\, and photographer. He has worked in wilderness education\, outdoor leadership\, and conservation for numerous organizations and communities across North America and Europe. He is engaged in telling stories that bring to light and life\, the complexity of humans living in the 21st century. Marcus currently lives in the Snoqualmie Valley in Washington State\, just east of Seattle. For more than 20 years\, Stuart has followed the solid waste route to understand how to reduce waste generation. As a mountaineer and environmentalist\, Stuart includes proposals in his presentations that invite us to reflect and learn alternatives to reduce waste generation and its connection with the natural areas that we enjoy so much when we practice outdoor activities. \nThis conversation\, primarily shared in English\, will have Spanish weaved throughout so that both language speakers have a great experience. We will find that the connection with nature and outdoor activities is something personal that only you can experience in your own way and at your own pace\, without the need to spend large amounts of money. DESCRIPTION:Join the Washington Native Plant Society (W.N.P.S.) to celebrate Native Plant Appreciation Month! Join W.N.P.S. for a free webinar on Heather Ecology and Restoration Efforts which will help us all learn more about restoration efforts in popular day-hike locations along the North Cascades Highway: \n“Heather Ecology and Restoration Efforts” with Kelly Baraibar\, USFS Biologist in the Methow Valley Ranger District. \nHeather provides some subalpine plant communities with the essential requirements to exist in harsh conditions. They form hardy mats which trap soil\, water and nutrients\, and provide protection for other plant species to establish. Yet it only takes about 20 footsteps to cause a heather mat to begin to die\, leading to the unraveling of the subalpine community in which it exists. Kelly will present the ecology of the heather species found in our area\, species distribution\, colonization strategies\, heather adaptations\, climate change\, and other fascinating facts. Her talk will also cover restoration efforts in popular day hike locations along the North Cascades Highway and challenges posed in the face of upward trends in the recreation. \nSpeaker Bio: \nKelly Baraibar\, U.S.F.S Botanist in Winthrop \nKelly is the District Botanist on the Methow Valley Ranger District in Winthrop.  Her career began with the Forest Service nearly 25 years ago as a wildland firefighter.  She spent the summer fighting fire while saving money to travel the world in the winter months.  When she grew weary of rappelling out of helicopters\, Kelly decided to hit the books and complete her degree at the University of Washington.  Kelly was the last graduating class at the U of W to earn a degree dedicated strictly to Botany.  Soon after graduation\, she was offered a permanent position on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.   Her first job as a permanent was spent between the Wenatchee River Ranger District and the Methow Valley Ranger District.  After a summer season\, she transferred to Okanogan to work with the Forest Service Ecology Program.  In 2010\, she accepted the District Botanist position on the Methow Valley R.D.  Kelly enjoys paddle boarding with her daughters down the Methow River in the summer\, and skiing as much as she can in the winter. \nHer evening talk is sponsored by our local Wenatchee Valley Chapter of the WNPS. \nThe hour-long webinar will occur on April 27 at 7pm; \nFree registration and for more information click here: https://www.wnps.org/wv-events/calendar/1010 \n

SUMMARY:Wolves in Washington: Updates from WDFW & the Wolf Advisory Group
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nClass Tuition: $15 \nAfter nearly being eradicated in the early 1900s\, the gray wolf (Canis lupus)\, a native Washington species\, has naturally returned to the state. A wolf pack with pups was confirmed in July 2008 in western Okanogan and northern Chelan counties and represented the first fully documented breeding by wolves in the state since the 1930s! Since then\, the state’s wolf population has increased at an average rate of 28% every year\, and many other wolf packs have been confirmed. \nThe first to return to Washington came on their own from existing packs in Idaho\, Montana\, Wyoming\, Oregon\, and British Columbia. Although there have been no federal or state efforts to proactively reintroduce wolves to Washington\, they have successfully repopulated parts of eastern Washington and the North Cascades. \nAccording to Conservation Northwest\, at the end of 2018\, Washington was home to a minimum of 126 wolves\, 27 wolf packs and 15 successful breeding pairs! \nJoin us for a Zoom presentation with biologists from the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife. They will share an overview of the status of wolves in the state\, provide updates on current wolf packs and take questions too. \nParticipants will learn how they can stay updated\, get involved\, and how the Washington Wolf Advisory Group is working to promote equitable\, inclusive\, and respectful dialogue and decision-making among diverse people to foster durable peace by transforming the root causes of social conflict and providing high quality recommendations on wolf recovery\, conservation\, and management. \nIf you can’t make this specific date or time\, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the class on your own time!
