DESCRIPTION:Red Devil Trail Runs\n\nRed Devil 50K\, 25K and 10K\nJune 5\, 2021\nSandcreek Trailhead\, Wenatchee National Forest\, Cashmere\, WA\n \nWe are excited to be back on these great Wenatchee National Forest trails south of Cashmere! The 50K\, 25K and 10K runs held on single-track trails and old logging roads have earned a reputation as some of the most challenging in the Pacific Northwest! \nStart times \n50K — 6:30 a.m. \n25K — 7:30 a.m. \n10K — 8 a.m. \n  \n50K \nThe Red Devil 50K has quickly become one of the Pacific Northwest’s must-do races. The race starts and ends at Sandcreek Trailhead and includes the Red Devil\, Red Hill\, Devil’s Gulch and Mission Ridge trail systems in the Wenatchee-Okanagan National Forest\, outside of Cashmere\, WA. These trails form an incredibly challenging 7\,200 feet of climbing to challenge even the most seasoned trail runner. We will have two fully staffed and supplied aid stations on the 50K course\, one of which you will pass twice at miles 9 and 26. The other you will pass at mile 17. \nThere will be a water only\, self-serve station at mile 5. At mile 9\, 17 and 26 we will have the usual Ultra running fare and plenty of Hammer Nutrition products as well. \nDepending on COVID-19 conditions at the time of the race\, we will be following additional precautions including wave starts\, aid station protocols and requirements for mask use. One water only\, self-serve station will be located at mile 5 and a fully staffed aid station will be at mile 9. We will have the usual Ultra running fare\, to include PB and J sandwiches\, pickles and pickle juice\, water\, electrolyte drink\, cookies\, candy\, pretzels\, fruit\, gels\, etc. \n10K \nThe out-and-back 10K\, which also starts and ends at the Sandcreek Trailhead\, and is on well-maintained logging and Forest Service roads\, has an elevation gain of 1\,000 feet. There is one water/electrolyte station\, which you pass twice as the course is out and back. \nMaps \n50K map \n25K map \n10K map \nEvent Details \nEach finisher will receive an iconic Red Devil medal\, a RunWenatchee face mask/buff\, shuttle transportation to and from the start/finish\, staffed aid stations that have full COVID-19 safety precautions in place. and plenty of food and hydration products. We partner with Chelan County Mountain Search and Rescue to provide course support and they are the event’s non-profit beneficiary. \nRace shirts are available for purchase\, online-only\, as part of registration checkout. \nMilepost 111 Brewing Co. in Cashmere will once again offer discounts to racers for food and beverage\nafter the race. \nDepending on COVID-19 conditions at the time of the race\, we will be following additional precautions including wave starts\, aid station protocols and requirements for mask use. More details will be available within a month of the race depending on requirements in place and the state of the pandemic. \nRaces are going cupless for 2021! \nWe are including a reusable\, collapsible drinking cup for all runners for our trail runs starting in 2021\, thus reducing our environmental impact by not having paper cups littering the course or in the landfill. \nCut-Off Times \nOur cut off times for the 50K are generous and allow for people to run the course. You will have to be able to move at an average of 3-3.5 mph to make the cut-offs. We reserve the right to pull you off the course if you are behind these times. At Mile 9 and 26 (Devils Gulch Trailhead) is an extraction point\, where runners can be shuttled back to the start/finish area if injured or do not meet the cut-off criteria. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nThink spring birding season is almost over? Think again! Pacific Northwest birdwatching excitement extends into the summer season. And who better than local avian aficionado Libby Mills to help us direct our curiosity? Drawing on her 50 years of bird watching experience\, Libby will point out the potential second clutches of resident chickadees\, wrens and robins as well as searching out just arrived tropical warblers\, grosbeaks and flycatchers. \nThe course will be located on private land outside of Deming\, in our socially-distanced small group with no public crowds. We are extremely lucky to have access to this unique area – the first time an Institute course has been offered at this property! \nThe day will start relatively early and move between a few different micro-habitats on the landscape. DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Erratics\, Ice Age Floods Institute’s next Zoom program\, “Plate Tectonics and Cascadia Earthquakes\,” will be on Tuesday June 8 at 7:00 PM with Kelsay Stanton\, Erratics past vice-president and current UW PhD candidate. \nCalifornia is known for its earthquakes\, but what about the rest of the west coast? What are our seismic hazards? Why don’t we have as many earthquakes as our more southerly neighbor? This class is a wildlife track and sign certification class through CyberTracker North America. David’s approach to this class is highly interactive\, engaging participants in identification and interpretation of tracks and signs. Lots of time for questions and discussion is built in. This style is an excellent way to learn and investigate\, with the chance to achieve a wildlife tracking certificate through Cybertracker Conservation. Certificates are awarded on three levels. You will not want to miss this opportunity! \nCybertracker classes provide an opportunity for quality\, focused learning from some of the best trackers in the country. They are designed to further participant’s tracking knowledge\, as well as to rigorously test and document their current tracking skill set. Originally designed to help African Bushmen gain employment on game preserves\, they also provide an internationally recognized certification of tracking ability\, an important credential for wildlife researchers and environmental educators as well as for people who want to test and push their own ability. Before this walk\, spend some time thinking about a bird you know\, such as a robin or a crow. Ask yourself the following questions: What size and shape (silhouette) does it have?
