SUMMARY:Writer in a Life Vest
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 13\, 2022\n7:00 pm 8:00 pm\n\n\nHYBRID EVENT! Come in person in WRI’s Red Barn or livestream via Zoom\n\nZoom link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87378715780 \nIf you’re looking for information\, insight\, and inspiration about climate change\, put on your life vest and settle into Writer in a Life Vest\, thirty-six lyric essays about the Salish Sea by Lopez Island\, WA author Iris Graville. The Wenatchee River Institute and A Book for All Seasons will host Graville at a reading and discussion Tuesday\, September 13th at 7 pm. She’ll be joined by a few Leavenworth residents to dramatize some of the essays. \nDrafted when Graville served as the first Writer-in-Residence for Washington State Ferries\, the essay collection explores threats to Southern Resident killer whales\, highlights the voices of climate activists and marine scientists\, and relates the joys (and challenges) of ferry transport among the San Juan Islands. Graville tackles complex interconnections and conflicts with a storyteller’s hand\, following the advice of poet Kim Stafford to\, “Figure out playful ways to write hard news that bring hope\, that end in a song.” \nDescribed as “nature writing at its best” by Washington State Book Award finalist Ana Maria Spagna\, Writer in a Life Vest leads readers to ask questions and find hope. If you’re angry\, fearful\, or despondent about the climate crisis\, these heartfelt ruminations will buoy you to act on the planet’s behalf. This is Graville’s fourth nonfiction book\, including the memoir\, Hiking Naked\, about the two years she and her family lived in Stehekin. \nThis is a FREE event with a donation basket at door.\nDoors open at 6:30pm for a community social with beer and wine available for purchase. The presentation will start at 7:00pm.\nA Book for All Seasons will be at this event to sell Iris’s book.\nAll Red Barn Events are now hybrid\, you may join us in person in the Red Barn or livestream virtually via Zoom. \nAddress: 347 Division Street\, Leavenworth\, WA 98826 \nPlease click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/87378715780\nWebinar ID: 873 7871 5780 \nOr One tap mobile :\nUS: +12532158782\,\,87378715780# or +16699006833\,\,87378715780#\nOr Telephone:\nDial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\nUS: +1 253 215 8782 or +1 669 900 6833 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 669 444 9171 or +1 386 347 5053 or +1 564 217 2000 or +1 646 931 3860 or +1 929 205 6099 or +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799\nWebinar ID: 873 7871 5780\nInternational numbers available: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kdzhmJkm6y

SUMMARY:Attempting the World Record for Longest Distance Traveled by Hand Cycle
DESCRIPTION:The VID Expedition-Attempting the World Record for Longest Distance Traveled by Hand Cycle \nThere’s a great opportunity coming up on Tuesday\, September 20\, to hear about the VID Expedition. This expedition was started by Michiel Desmet who is from Belgium and has been living with a spinal cord injury for the past 10 years. He is currently attempting to break the world record for the longest distance traveled by hand cycle. His route is more than 4000 miles long (6500 km; 6500 is VID in Roman numerals). He started in Anchorage\, AK in June and plans to finish in Los Angeles\, CA by the end of November. \nHe is currently passing through NCW and will be giving a presentation about his journey at The Mercantile on Tuesday\, September 20\, at 6:30 PM. The Mercantile is located at 14 N Wenatchee Ave. Michiel definitely has an interesting story to tell and unique logistics to manage as he makes this record-breaking attempt. \nThis will be a very informal event and there will likely be time to ask Michiel questions that you have about his experiences\, both on and off the bike. This presentation is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Red Barn Event: Beautiful Wounds
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, September 28\, 2022\n7:00 pm8:00 pm\n\n\nHYBRID EVENT: WRI’s Red Barn 347 Division Street\, Leavenworth\, WA 98826 or livestream via Zoom\n\nCarved and scoured by catastrophic floods at the end of the most recent ice age\, the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington unfold with rugged beauty and the diversity of their natural features and wildlife habitat\, including braided waterfalls\, sprawling canyons and cinematic palisades. With Beautiful Wounds\, writer/photographer Timothy Connor leads us on a lush photographic journey into the origins and sanctum of one of America’s most enigmatic natural treasures. On one level\, the trek through history and terrain is a deeply personal sojourn to ward off depression in the wake of heartbreak. Yet the broader dimensions capture the light\, texture and wonder of nature as time unfolds in quiet acts of recovery\, pierced by birdsong and the distant howls of coyotes. \nTimothy Connor is a national award-winning journalist and nature photographer based in Spokane. Born at Camp Hanford\, WA in 1956\, Tim was named the outstanding graduate in journalism from Washington State University in 1979. His investigative reporting on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation’s environmental and public health hazards in the early 1980s led to a decade of successful public activism to bring the nation’s nuclear weapons plants under stricter public scrutiny and regulation. He has also been deeply involved in efforts to reform police accountability and to protect vulnerable communities in Washington from air pollution created by mass agricultural burning. \nAs a journalist he has earned multiple regional and national awards from the Society of Professional Journalism for both his print and broadcast reporting. He has also been recognized (2011) by the Washington State Bar Association for a career of excellence in reporting on legal issues. \nPrior to Beautiful Wounds\, he authored (with Major Margaret Witt) “Tell: Love\, Defiance and the Military Trial at the Tipping Point of Gay Rights” (2017)\, the story of Major Witt’s successful legal battle that ultimately resulted in Congressional repeal of the military’s policy of expelling homosexual service members. \nBeautiful Wounds is his fifth book and is being nationally distributed by The Countryman Press\, an imprint of W.W. Norton & Co. \nThis is a FREE event with a donation basket at door.\nDoors open at 6:30pm for a community social with beer and wine available for purchase. The presentation will start at 7:00pm.\nA Book for All Seasons will be at this event to sell Tim’s book.\nAll Red Barn Events are now hybrid\, you may join us in person in the Red Barn or livestream virtually via Zoom. \nAddress: 347 Division Street\, Leavenworth\, WA 98826 \nPlease click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/87804170323\nOr One tap mobile :\nUS: +12532158782\,\,87804170323# or +16699006833\,\,87804170323#\nOr Telephone:\nDial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\nUS: +1 253 215 8782 or +1 669 900 6833 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 669 444 9171 or +1 929 205 6099 or +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 386 347 5053 or +1 564 217 2000 or +1 646 931 3860\nWebinar ID: 878 0417 0323\nInternational numbers available: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kdZF7ltcjS
