SUMMARY:Something to Crow About: Explore Deep Connections of Corvids & Humans
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nThis is a virtual event \nClass Tuition: $10 \nTo register for this class click here. \nCorvids are everywhere: they are found on nearly every continent and many species thrive in human dominated environments. They have influenced art and literature throughout history\, and whether they inspire love or hate\, they have certainly impacted the hearts and minds of the humans who share their space. But being “common” isn’t enough to earn this level of connection. So what is it about corvids that positions them to take such a prominent role in culture and storytelling traditions? And how does that relationship impact the birds themselves? \nJoin Dr. Kaeli Swift as she explores the unique features of corvids that make them so appealing to watch and study\, how they have influenced our cultures across time and space\, and how human attention towards these birds has shaped their own ecology and culture. \nIf you can’t make this specific date or time\, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the class on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time after the program.

SUMMARY:Bird Fest Recon Trip at Stormy Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Location: Stormy Preserve \nJoin Cascadia Conservation District’s Mark Ingman and Chelan-Douglas Land Trust’s Susan Ballinger to explore a variety of Entiat watershed bird habitats including recently restored riverside forests and shrubby creeks. We’ll walk off-trail for ½-mile along the Entiat River where over 60 species of birds use the riverside forest habitat during May. We hope to see resident American dipper\, belted kingfisher\, common merganser\, and dozens of just-arrived migrant songbirds\, especially flycatchers\, warblers\, and vireos. We will then drive a few miles on a dirt USFS road to explore Potato Creek that experienced the 2018 Cougar Creek Fire. The fire moved through the Entiat watershed in 33 days burning over 135\,000 acres and 20% of the Potato Creek watershed. The mid-high severity fire left behind a charred landscape but also many snags for bird habitat. Now five years later\, through a large investment from area restoration partners such as the USFS\, Cascadia CD\, Trout Unlimited and Cascade Fisheries\, Potato Creek is vibrant and green—replete with birds\, wildlife\, and even more water! Come learn more about how beaver dams are accelerating the rate of post fire recovery and how they help form a containment line to future fires. \nTo REGISTER CLICK HERE \nContact Susan Ballinger if you have any questions. susan@cdlandtrust.org.

SUMMARY:Grizzly Bears: Guardians of the Wilderness (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nCost: $10 \nGrizzly bears\, one of North America’s most iconic wildlife species\, once roamed across half the continent. Today\, their range and numbers are much diminished. They are gone from 25 percent of their former territory in Canada and 94 percent in the Lower 48 states. And they are no longer found at all in the southern part of their original range\, which once extended all the way to central Mexico. \nIn 1975\, grizzly bears in the Lower 48 states were listed under the newly minted U.S. Endangered Species Act. The following decades saw increased protections implemented in most other jurisdictions. Yet despite making slow but steady gains in some places\, grizzlies continue to lose ground in others. Their uneven recovery leaves wildlife managers and communities asking questions like: Why is it so hard for grizzlies to survive in the modern world? And what do we lose when they disappear from the landscape? \nFrances Backhouse is a Vancouver Island-based journalist and author who writes about nature and human history\, often exploring their intersections in a conservation context. For this unique online program\, she will discuss the challenges grizzly bears face\, their vital contributions to ecosystem health and how they can serve as guardians of the wilderness. \nAnd we’re excited to welcome Joe Scott from Conservation Northwest to the conversation to provide us with a timely update on the on-again\, off-again Grizzly Bear Reintroduction efforts in the North Cascades. Joe leads Conservation Northwest’s trans-boundary grizzly bear recovery and habitat connectivity efforts in the North Cascades and southwestern BC\, working collaboratively with several First Nations\, research biologists\, governments and other conservation organizations. \nAudience members will have the opportunity to ask questions of both speakers during the final segment of the program. \nIf you can’t make this specific date or time\, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the class on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time after the program. \nFor more information or to register click here.
