SUMMARY:Eyewitness Chronicles of Mount St. Helens
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee Valley Erratics Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute will meet at 7:00 P.M.\, Tuesday\, April 9 at the Wenatchee Valley Museum\, 127 South Mission\, Wenatchee. \nIn the Path of Destruction—Eyewitness Chronicles of Mount St. Helens \nRichard Waitt\, Research Geologist with USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory\, Vancouver\, will talk about his book\, In the Path of Destruction—Eyewitness Chronicles of Mount St Helens. The book portrays Mount St. Helens’ May 18\, 1980 eruption through first-person stories of people caught in\, racing from\, or witnessing the blast. Included are tales of the spring-1980 pre-eruption crisis period and of the explosion itself. And then the complicated aftermath of the eruption’s effects on landscape\, structures\, people\, and wildlife. \nA meticulous scientist with extensive knowledge of Mount St Helens\, Waitt scoured legal documents\, personal diaries\, and geologists’ field notes to assemble this detailed and accurate chronicle of events. Though only partly a science book\, science does lie within the hundreds of narratives he collected. \nThe program is free & open to the public. \nFor overviews of the Ice Age Floods and more information on the Ice Age Floods Institute\, please see their website: http://www.iafi.org; http://www.hugefloods.com; and quadricopter videos of Ice Age features\, http://www.brucebjornstad.com.

SUMMARY:Coexisting with Large Carnivores
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee River Institute Red Barn Speaker Event\, Coexisting with Large Carnivores \nCome out to the Wenatchee River Institute’s Red Barn on Wed.\, Apr. 17th and learn about coexisting with large carnivores from Western Wildlife Outreach (WWO). Doors open at 6:30pm for no-host refreshments and community social\, and the interactive presentation begins at 7pm. \nWWO is a Bellingham\, WA nonprofit organization focusing their outreach and education on helping people live\, work and recreate near large\, wild carnivores –bears\, cougars and wolves! \nExecutive Director Lorna Smith and her husband Darrell Smith\, WWO’s Lead Scientist\, frequently give talks and demonstrations all around the Pacific Northwest about large carnivore ecology and behavior\, providing information on what to do if any of these wild animals are encountered. \n“The world needs our top predators. Without them biodiversity and ecological health suffers\,” states Lorna. \nNumerous areas in and around the Cascade Range support healthy populations of black bear. WWO promotes safe coexistence among black bears\, humans\, pets\, and livestock. Their Grizzly Bear Outreach Project helps to disseminate a more accurate understanding of grizzly bear behavior\, as well as information about grizzly recovery in the North Cascades and Selkirk Ecosystems. \nThis past winter brought a number of cougar encounters to the upper Wenatchee Valley. WWO’s Cougar Outreach provides educational materials about cougar behavior\, habitat needs\, their prey base\, and what to do should you encounter a cougar. \nRich Beausoleil\, Bear and Cougar Specialist and Karelian Bear Dog Program lead for WA Department of Fish and Wildlife\, will also take part in the evening’s presentation. Beausoleil will be accompanied by his Karelian Bear Dog Indy\, and answer questions about non-lethal predator aversion\, wildlife issues in the Wenatchee Valley\, and preventing wildlife conflicts. Karelian Bear Dogs are trained to haze bears and other wild animals from areas where they are not welcome. \nSaid Beausoleil\, “I was just in downtown Leavenworth Monday [Mar. 25th] because a family of bears was utilizing Enchantment Park due to the amount of attractants people had left out. It is important to understand it is a matter of personal responsibility to avoid conflicts with wildlife.” \nWWO’s Gray Wolf Outreach provides current\, sound-science as well as techniques to successfully coexist with wolves\, and how to employ non-lethal wolf management measures whenever possible. Gray wolf populations are being reestablished across the Western United States and since 2008\, have come of their own volition north from Canada into Washington State. \nThe Smiths are a wildlife biologist-ecologist team and have spent their careers working on wildlife and wildlife habitat related issues\, as well as endangered species management. They share a lifelong interest in\, and experience with\, large carnivores. Lorna has served on boards of directors for a number of Northwest environmental organizations\, and has over 30 years of experience managing large conservation projects and campaigns. Darrell\, with degrees in both fisheries and wildlife\, has lead large-scale habitat restoration projects\, managed watershed and forestry evaluations\, and worked with large carnivores for more than 30 years. \nAll ages welcome and admission is by donation | 347 Division Street in Leavenworth www.wenatcheeriverinstitute.org | (509)548-0181 x4

SUMMARY:Rock Glaciers of the Eastern Cascades
DESCRIPTION:Red Barn Event at the Wenatchee River Institute\, Wednesday\, April 24th \nRock Glaciers of the Eastern Cascades\, Professor Karl Lillquist PhD\, Geography Department at Central WA University \nCentral WA University Professor Karl Lillquist will present Rock Glaciers of the Eastern Cascades in Wenatchee River Institute’s Red Barn on Wednesday\, April 24th. Doors open at 6:30PM for community social and no-host refreshments\, presentation begins 7PM. \nWhen we think of the Cascade Mountain Range\, glaciers often come to mind. Author and prolific climber Fred Beckey’s classic book is aptly titled A Range of Glaciers: The Exploration and Survey of the Northern Cascade Range. However\, rock glaciers have not claimed the same amount of fame. These oft-overlooked glaciers elongate to broad deposits of rock and ice\, showing evidence of movement away from steep slopes in mountainous terrain. \nTraditionally\, Rock glaciers were considered key landforms and climate indicators of the more continental mountain ranges\, where snowfall and winter temperatures are lower than their marine counterparts –little attention was given to rock glaciers in the marine-influenced Cascade Range. Rock glaciers across Washington’s Eastern Cascades have now been identified\, mapped\, and analyzed in an effort to understand how\, why\, and when\, they formed. Such glaciers are also being used as a tool to better understand permafrost in the Eastern Cascades\, and its significance as a regional water supply in a warming world. \nLillquist is a physical geographer who has been a CWU faculty member since 1995. His first academic love is physical geography field study and\, growing up in Coulee City\, WA\, this likely played a big part in developing his focus. \n“I grew up amidst the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington. My parent’s house was situated on a late Pleistocene flood scoured basalt surface\, and I grew up recreating in this unique landscape. Also\, I spent my summers removing rocks\, glacial erratics\, from wheat fields located behind the terminus of the Okanogan Lobe of the Cordilleran Ice sheet\,” tells Lillquist. \nLillquist teaches physical geography\, geomorphology\, soils\, snow\, air photo analysis\, field methods\, mountain environments\, arid lands\, and graduate research. His current research is focused on environmental change in the mountains and deserts of the western U.S.\, with an emphasis on using geomorphology\, soils\, and stratigraphy to better understand glaciers\, rock glaciers\, glacial lakes\, and arroyos. \nAll ages welcome and admission is by donation | 347 Division Street in Leavenworth www.wenatcheeriverinstitute.org | Event Link

SUMMARY:We Are Community-Findings From the PCT Trail
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Series presents Richard Brinkman on the Pacific Crest Trail and community May 2 The 2018-2019 WVC Speaks Lecture Series presents “We Are Community: Finding Gemeinschaft in a Gesellschaft World\,” by WVC faculty Richard Brinkman. \nBrinkman will be presenting a second time for the lecture series his research findings from traveling the Pacific Crest Trail. Brinkman first presented about his journey in 2016. The lecture is Thursday\, May 2 at 2 p.m. in Wenatchi Hall room 2105 and room 901 in Omak\, via ITV. It is free and open to the public. \nThe Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a 2\,650 mile footpath that runs from Mexico to Canada. A notoriously up and down route\, the PCT passes four national monuments\, six national parks\, five state parks\, 25 national forests and 48 federal wilderness areas. Brinkman—who hiked the PCT from April through September\, 2015—explored not only the incredible majesty of the trail\, but a subculture of those who attempt to hike the entire length of the trail. He studied the long-distance hiking subculture as a participant observer and conducted interviews with fellow thru-hikers along the length of the trail. His journey took 150 days. \nBrinkman is collaborating with Marshall University sociology professor Dr. Kristi Fondren\, who pioneered the first of such studies on the Appalachian Trail (AT)\, the PCT’s sister trail on the Atlantic coast and one of three long trails in the United States. The two have presented two papers on the subject at Rural Sociological Society annual meetings. A few of the focal points of the research include the very strong emotional bonds that develop among long-distance hikers\, how ‘trail names’ affect personal identity\, and how our society and world could learn from the long-distance hiking subculture. \nRichard Brinkman is a sociology professor at WVC and has taught sociology at the college or university level since 1992. Prior to teaching full-time at WVC\, Brinkman served the cities of Aberdeen\, Wenatchee and Leavenworth\, the latter as a city administrator. Both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in sociology from the University of Oregon and Iowa State University respectively\, and he served in the United States Peace Corps from 1990-92 in Central America. Brinkman has served many years with charitable organizations including The United Way and Red Cross\, and performed comedy magic for many years benefitting such causes. In 2015\, he was awarded a sabbatical from Wenatchee Valley College to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and conduct research on the long-distance hiking subculture. \nDaily parking passes on the Wenatchee campus cost $2. Parking permit machines are available in the Wells Hall/Music and Art Center\, Smith Gym\, Brown Library and Sexton Hall lots. Students must have valid WVC parking permits.
