SUMMARY:Wenatchee River Salmon Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee River Salmon Festival is held each year to celebrate the return of the salmon to our northwest rivers. The rivers that are home to the salmon also provide sustenance for birds\, frogs\, salamanders\, foxes\, deer\, bugs\, bears and countless trees\, bushes\, and flowers. Learn about the connections between our rivers\, salmon and people\, and other wildlife and habitats through educational and recreation activities. \nThe Wenatchee River Salmon Festival is a three-day natural resource education event held every fall\, with 2 school days and 1 community day. The Festival is held on the grounds of the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery off Icicle Creek Road\, located at the mouth of the scenic Icicle Canyon in Leavenworth\, Washington. \nOur theme this year is “Catch the Salmon Fest Fever!”.  An exciting menu of hands-on activities and “edutainment” gives students from throughout North Central Washington a unique opportunity to discover and appreciate the complexities of the natural world and the significance of salmon to people of the northwest. \nSalmon Fest is also excited to partner with the Chelan County PUD and their River Ramble Activities for the 2019 Salmon Fest events! These include storytelling\, tipi setup\, traditional canoe use\, traditional drumming demo\, traditional salmon bake\, traditional salmon fishing techniques\, and a tribal lithic technology demo with Atlatl throw and flint knapping. \nSalmon Fest thanks all the amazing contributors\, supporters\, and exhibitors! \nVisit www.salmonfest.org for more information about the history and full details. \nThe Wenatchee River Salmon Festival is made possible by their 501c3 nonprofit parent organization the Friends of Northwest Hatcheries\, based in Leavenworth\, WA. SUMMARY:Wenatchee Row & Paddle Club-Guano Rocks Regatta!
DESCRIPTION:The 28th annual Guano Rocks Regatta with Wenatchee Row & Paddle Club is coming up on Saturday\, September 28th at Lincoln Rock State Park. \nWhat is the Guano Rocks Regatta you ask? Well let us explain. WRPC’s regatta is a fun human powered boat race for all kinds of boats and skill levels. If you paddle a kayak\, or a surfski or a board or you row a shell\, or rowboat\, or even cycle a pedal boat there’s a category for you. Some experience is necessary\, but you don’t have to be an expert to participate. \nYou can opt for the 3.2-mile Little Turtle race. Or step up to the challenge of the 5.5-mile Guano Rocks race. Both races start and finish at the Lincoln Rock boat launch. The Little Turtle race goes around Turtle Rock island in a counter clockwise direction. In that race you are never far from shore. The Guano Rocks race also goes around island but continues a mile or so past the end of the island to a small pile of rock covered with\, you guessed it\, guano. Now you know how the race got its name. At that point you turn around and head for the finish. \nAfter the race there is a BBQ lunch. It’s free for racers and volunteers\, $12 for others. The award ceremony is held during the lunch. \nThe race is a Sound Rowers Open Water Rowing and Paddling Club sanctioned event. More information and a link to registration can be found on the Sound Rowers web site: http://soundrowers.org/wp/race-schedule/guano-rocks/ \nIt promises to be a lot of fun. In the past we have had good attendance from folks west of the mountains. This year we’re really hoping for a big WRPC turn-out. So get together with your friends and plan to participate. This is a family friendly event!

SUMMARY:Fall Salmon Walks with W.R.I.
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee River Institute Fall Salmon Walks\, Oct. 4th and 11th\, witness the return of the Pacific Salmon \nThe fall Pacific Salmon migration has begun. Walk along the banks of the Wenatchee River guided by a WRI naturalist to watch these fish jump fully out of the water while in search of spawning grounds. The females move gravel to build a ‘nest’ for their redds (salmon eggs)\, as males battle over fertilization. This is an amazing experience for nearby residents as well as those from out of area\, and not to be missed! \nThe fish now at this river location migrated from the Pacific Ocean to the Columbia River in the summertime. “For someone who has seen salmon spawning many times\, the fascination never diminishes. Considering what they have gone through to get this part of the river –hundreds of miles of river and over dams\, they don’t seem tired at all\, even jumping completely out of the river!” exclaimed Rachel Bishop\, WRI Community Education Lead and Fall Salmon Walk trip guide. \nWRI Fall Salmon Walks\, 10am on Oct. 4 and 11\, 10am-12noon. Meet at Wenatchee River Institute’s River Haus located at 347 Division Street in Leavenworth. Travel by foot along Leavenworth’s waterfront trail system to watch and learn about salmon and their breathtaking journey. Dress for changing weather and pack a snack and water. \nAdmission is free\, donations are appreciated. All ages welcome and binoculars are available for use during the walk. Questions? SUMMARY:A FOOLS Journey-with Wenatchee Valley Erratics
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee Valley Erratics Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute will meet at 7:00 P.M.\, Tuesday\, October 8 at the Wenatchee Valley Museum\, 127 South Mission\, Wenatchee. \n“Searching the Okanogan Drainage for Multiple Ice Age Events and Catastrophic Flooding: A FOOLS Journey” \nGlacial features of the Okanogan area have stories to tell\, and a FOOL has come to tell them. Don Hruska\, retired mining geologist\, is one of four Okanogan residents who formed the FOOLS\, Friends of the Okanogan Lobe. Their quest has been to investigate how geologic forces shaped the Okanogan landscape. \nThe Okanogan drainage is in the heart of the last ice sheet of the 2.6 million-year-old Pleistocene Ice Age. That ice sheet left a covering rich in glacial drift and associated glacial topography in the Okanogan. A number of theories abound about the pre-ice terrain. When was the onset and gradual decay of the ice? Are there indications of older ice events? Is there evidence of flooding episodes\, some perhaps catastrophic\, that may have contributed to the large scabland floods that are familiar to us? \nPlan on joining the field trip next spring\, when we will visit many of these Ice Age features. \nDon’s book\, Okanogan Ice Skating: Three Million Years of Glacial Impact and Basement Rumbling\, will soon be on sale in the IAFI bookstore (https://iafi.org/product-category/book/). \nThe program is free & open to the public. \nFor overviews of the Ice Age Floods and more information on the Ice Age Floods Institute\, please see our website: http://www.iafi.org; http://www.hugefloods.com; and quadricopter videos of Ice Age features\, http://www.brucebjornstad.com.

SUMMARY:Pacific Salmon in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:Pacific Salmon in a changing climate \n\nWednesday\, October 9\, 2019\n7:00 pm 9:00 pm\n\n\nRed Barn\, Wenatchee River Institute\, 347 Division Street\, Leavenworth\n\nPacific Salmon have survived volcanic eruptions\, repeated glaciations\, shifting rivers\, the commercial fishing boom of the late 1800s\, an era of dam building\, and many other human-related changes to their environment. They now face additional stressors related to climate change\, including increased stream temperatures and altered river flows. Join local biologist Tracy Bowerman in a discussion about the adaptations salmon have evolved to persist in a highly dynamic environment\, and how salmon have responded to recent climatic shifts. Tracy will present the latest research on how climate change is expected to affect salmon populations and other organisms that rely on salmon for food and nutrients. \nTracy Bowerman lives in Leavenworth and conducts research on salmon and trout throughout the Columbia River Basin. She has a Ph.D. in Aquatic Ecology from Utah State University where she studied bull trout populations and conservation biology. \nPhoto courtesy of Barrie Kovich and Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. \nDoors open at 6:30pm for community social and no-host refreshments\, presentation begins at 7:00pm. \n\n\n\n\n\nContact Info\nRebecca Ryan\nrryan@wenatcheeriverinstitute.org\n509-548-0181 ext. 2

This is an amazing experience for nearby residents as well as those from out of area\, and not to be missed!\nThe fish now at this river location migrated from the Pacific Ocean to the Columbia River in the summertime. “For someone who has seen salmon spawning many times\, the fascination never diminishes. Considering what they have gone through to get this part of the river –hundreds of miles of river and over dams\, they don’t seem tired at all\, even jumping completely out of the river!” exclaimed Rachel Bishop\, WRI Community Education Lead and Fall Salmon Walk trip guide.\nWRI Fall Salmon Walks\, 10am on Oct. 4 and 11\, 10am-12noon. Meet at Wenatchee River Institute’s River Haus located at 347 Division Street in Leavenworth. Travel by foot along Leavenworth’s waterfront trail system to watch and learn about salmon and their breathtaking journey. Dress for changing weather and pack a snack and water.\nAdmission is free\, donations are appreciated. All ages welcome and binoculars are available for use during the walk. Questions? Brewery \nWenatchee River Institute brings Birds of Borneo to Science on Tap! to the Wenatchee Valley Brewing Co. Brewery on Tue.\, Oct. 15\, 6-7pm. Suzanne Tomassi\, Wenatchee Valley ornithologist and Research Scientist with the University of Sheffield\, UK\, will give a present about her 10-year study in Borneo’s Danum Valley. \nPerhaps the oldest rainforest on Earth\, the remote and unforgettable Danum Valley is a biodiversity hotspot. “I love talking about Danum Valley because most people don’t realize such a place exists. When you step into this deep\, ancient forest\, you can almost feel it breathing around you. Every day you encounter a human-like primate face peering at you through the trees\, or a silent cat creeping by\, and always a cacophony of birds and insects. It’s a wild Disneyland!” tells Tomassi. \nTomassi’s fieldwork uses birds as a means to measure wildlife responses to both natural and human-driven phenomena. Come learn about this ancient forest and see photos of the spectacular wildlife that make it their home. She is a Professional Wetland Scientist and Certified Wildlife Biologist\, holds a Master of Science degree in Fish and Wildlife Biology\, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology. \nThere will be a raffle of WRI and Wenatchee Valley Brewery goods following the presentation.
