Dec. 17\, join Wenatchee River Institute (WRI) and NCW Audubon Society for the 120th Audubon Christmas Bird Count. This is citizen science at its best\, as birds both seen and heard will be tallied! WRI and NCW Audubon will lead birders of all experience levels from the WRI campus\, 347 Division Street\, on one of the routes along Leavenworth’s Waterfront Trail from 9am-1pm. \nThe Audubon Society and other organizations will use the data collected from the nation’s longest-running community science bird project to assess the health of bird populations and help guide conservation actions throughout the year. The National Audubon Society protects birds and the places they need\, today and tomorrow. \nDress for cold weather and non-aerobic time outdoors. Bring binoculars if you have them\, a notepad\, a snack and something warm to sip from a thermos. Participants are not required to stay for the entire walk and all ages are welcome. Questions? We hold this event on a regular basis in the LocalTel Event Center inside Pybus Public Market. \nThis forum gives local residents an opportunity to hear from community leaders and personalities in a candid atmosphere on a variety of topics. One of our reporters or editors interviews the guest or guests live on stage based on questions they have researched and on questions submitted by Wenatchee World readers. DESCRIPTION:Outings will be on the 3rd Wednesday of the month and led by Wenatchee Naturalist\, Susan Ballinger. She will record bird sightings and enter them into the community science eBird database.\nWe will meet at the north parking lot at Walla Walla Park\, next to the restrooms\, and spend about 30 minutes in the park\, and then walk the 2-mile round trip loop within Horan Natural Area.\nThe walks begin ‪at 7:30 ‬a.m.and end about ‪10:00‬. It is possible for people to join in at the start and depart early if they need to be at work.\nThe Friends of Horan is dedicated to gathering and sharing information about the Horan area to increase public awareness about the area.\nThese bird walks will immerse you in the beauty of the Horan Natural Area and provide an opportunity to learn about the area’s history and the potential for future ecological improvements and use. \nParticipants are welcome to come for all or part of any walk. We welcome both active duty emergency responders and 2019 summer seasonal personnel to take a day for themselves to recharge and enjoy the mountain. \nOn December\, 21st we want to take a day to celebrate and publicly thank all of our local and regional Emergency Responders on the mountain \nAll Firefighters\, EMTs\, and Law Enforcement professionals need only bring some type of proof of employment like an ID card\, letterhead\, or pay stub to receive their complimentary lift ticket.

DESCRIPTION:Kick off the New Year with a FIRST DAY HIKE! Join volunteers and park staff for a brisk snowshoe hike around our frosty winter wonderland as we ring in the New Year in the great outdoors! This is a fantastic hike for first-timers in snowshoes or adults with children. The hike is easy with varying views\, plenty of opportunities for snowball fights and memorable photos! A limited number of snowshoes are available to rent\, please call ahead to reserve a pair. \nFollowing the hike\, hot cocoa\, and light snacks will be available for participants in the North Reservation Booth. \nTime: 11:00 a.m. \nLocation: Meet at the North Reservation Booth. We will hike down to the river\, gently proceed upriver to the North Beach\, and then along the shore and back into the woods. Options to shorten your hike are available via the “Easy Street” trail\, once we depart from the North Beach. We suggest taking a snack break and a group photo here! \nGear: Wear warm clothes and dress in layers. DESCRIPTION:Mission Ridge Yeti “Release” & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony \nLocation: At the top of the Liberator Express at Mission Ridge Resort \nJoin the creators and artists behind NCW’s newest mythological art installation for a Wenatchee Valley Chamber hosted ribbon cutting on Saturday\, January 4th\, 2020. The towering 11ft metal sculpture\, known affectionately as “The Yeti” will be officially introduced to the public and “released” to the wild at its new semi-permanent home near the top of the Liberator Express at Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort. \nThe life-size sculpture was created by a team of local artists called Project Yeti\, and installed in September 2019. Adorned with reclaimed metal chain\, the installation was designed to gather snow and ice to provide a different caricature upon each viewing. Some days it may be the mythical Bigfoot\, brown and rusty. Other days it will be the Yeti – gnarled and covered with snow and ice. “Mission Ridge provides the perfect ‘yeti sighting’ backdrop for the thousands of visitors to the mountain each year” says Project Manager\, Kasey Koski. “We hope that it becomes a beloved part of the Mission Ridge experience.” \nProject Yeti consists of Kasey Koski\, Project Manager; Zeb Postelwait & Thad Brewer\, Creative Leads and Oly Mingo\, Outreach Coordinator. The list of supporting sponsors includes Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center\, Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest\, Lemolo Cafe and Deli\, North 40 Productions\, Wenatchee Sand & Gravel\, Wenatchee Valley Scrap & Recycle\, Randy’s Towing\, American Shoe Shop and Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort. The project also raised several hundred dollars in public crowd funding. \nThe ribbon cutting is open to the public\, however a lift ticket is required to access the chair lift. DESCRIPTION:Adult STEM Night with Wenatchee River Institute and North Central Regional Library \nOn Tue.\, Jan. 7\, 2020\, come out to Wenatchee River Institute’s Red Barn\, 347 Division St. in Leavenworth\, for hands-on experiences with virtual reality\, robotics\, and lasers! \nImmerse yourself and dance your way through a virtual 3D world. Learn how to program North Central Regional Library’s (NCRL) newest Sphero RVR robot\, inspired by students and educators. The NCRL STEM department –science\, technology\, engineering and math– will partner with the WRI to bring fun STEM programs to adults. \nEnjoy yourself while working on motor skills with Beat Saber\, a virtual reality rhythm game. With a pair of light sabers\, slice through flying blocks representing musical beats of adrenalin pumping music while surrounded by a futuristic world. This is an interactive game and a great introduction to the world of virtual reality. \nSphero’s RVR robot works and looks much like a remote control car\, but with a programming interface. This activity is an opportunity to learn about writing code and having a good\, experiential time while doing it. Heather Inczauskis\, NCRL’s STEM Coordinator\, will also bring Arduino microbite controllers\, the small board that makes electronics we use interactive. Inczauskis will help you begin or expand your basic block coding and (legal) hacking skills. \n“Adults don’t usually get to play with robots and have missed out on experiencing this really fun stuff that transports you to a different world. Come out to experiment and play\, it’s really cool! Test out new technology and find out what your kids are doing in school\,” encourages Inczauskis. \nInczauskis will also bring a laser cutter to cut your original design into a piece of wood\, along with something from National Geographic’s interactive virtual reality explorations\, like climbing Mount Everest or choosing your own story about a bear. “Many adults haven’t taken time to draw things in years. People forget how creative they can be!” said Inczauskis about the laser cutter. \nDoors open at 6:30pm. The event is FREE with donations appreciated. On Thur.\, Jan. 16\, 6-7:30pm\, Wenatchee River Institute (WRI) and The Bubblery\, a soap company in Leavenworth\, will offer a class on making your own bars without of the use of plastic containers and harsh chemicals! \nThe Bubblery’s owner Shawna Lassen\, will teach you how to make shampoo and conditioner bars by formulating a palm and sulfite free vegan base designed to benefit your particular hair type. Various essential oils and herbs will be used such as charcoal\, coconut oil\, rosemary\, orange and lemon peel. \n“My initial motivation to make these bars was simply to cut down on waste and have a more natural haircare option. I also really like DIY projects like this because it educates people on how to create simple items used daily that will have a lower environmental impact and are geared toward personal needs\,” said Lassen.\nTake the step away from commercial shampoos and conditioners often made with harsh ingredients (including lye!) and dispensed in plastic containers not easily recycled. Participants will leave with their own personalized shampoo and conditioner bars. Class cost is $38 for WRI-members and $45 for non-members\, with a limit of 15 participants.
