The Wenatchee Valley YMCA is offering FREE community swim lessons to 500 youth\, teens\, and adults as part of our Y SPLASH outreach. Registration for the weeklong event opens on March 23. DESCRIPTION:The Columbia Rolls On: A Vision for the Future \n\n\nModernizing a treaty to sustain a river and its people into the 21st Century \nPresented by the Wenatchee Valley Museum: \nSpeaker panel discussion highlights the history\, status and opportunities related to the historic Columbia River Treaty and its renegotiation. Panelists include Chelan County PUD General Manager Steve Wright\, “A River Captured” author Eileen Delahanty Pearkes and John Sirois of the Upper Columbia United Tribes. The program is moderated by Museum board member Sara Rolfs and sponsored by the Wenatchee River Institute and the Cascade Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group. It is a part of the Wenatchee Valley Environmental Film and Lecture Series. \nEach speaker will share their unique perspectives and stories about how the 50-year-old Columbia River Treaty has impacted river communities and offer insights into what an updated\, modernized Columbia River Treaty has the potential to create in terms of sustaining and restoring the Columbia River and its people during a time of climate change and uncertainty. The treaty is an agreement established 50 years ago between Canada and the United States to jointly manage hydropower production and flood management. While this agreement brought important benefits to the Northwest\, it also caused catastrophic harm to the river’s health and communities on both sides of the international border. \nThe panel discussion is in four parts beginning with Steve Wright’s experiences with the treaty and his ideas for a balanced solution providing broad benefits to the Pacific Northwest. Author Eileen Delahunty Pearkes’ portion of the presentation is titled “Healing the Columbia” and features historical images and details the losses to the river basin as the result of the original treaty. John Sirois shares the historical perspective of the river from a First Nations point of view and talks about the importance of restoring salmon runs above Grand Coulee and Chief Joseph dams. After the three presentations\, there will be an opportunity for guests to ask questions of the panel.

SUMMARY:Foothills Wildflower Field Study
DESCRIPTION:This class at WVC Continuing Education program (wvc.edu/ced) will use all your senses to explore and learn about blooming wildflowers in the Wenatchee Foothills. Each week\, you will study 3-5 plants on site\, learning key identification characteristics and creating a personal field journal (provided). The study will include learning about each wildflower’s habitat\, ecological role\, and its use by animals and people. Loaner magnifying lens and a field identification guide will be provided. This class is in partnership with Chelan-Douglas Land Trust and we will use trails at the Jacobson Preserve. In case of rain\, we will meet at a nearby covered location. Fitness Level: Participants need to be able to walk on uneven surface of an uphill and downhill trail. The course will cover up to 1 mile total roundtrip\, walking at a slow pace. DESCRIPTION:LMA’s mission is to strengthen the community through climbing and what better way to do that than by hosting the annual Leavenworth Rockfest! A grassroots rock climbing event\, Rockfest has been Washington’s largest climbing festival for the past 18 years. Now it’s hosted by the Leavenworth Mountain Association as their largest fundraiser of the year and supported by several amazing people and companies\, all of which have played an integral part in the success of past Rockfests as well as this years. \nThe festival has several different elements aimed at educating and introducing climbing to everyone as well as encouraging seasoned climbers to push their limits in fun and competitive ways. The culmination of these elements is a festival for climbers and non-climbers alike! SUMMARY:Horse Lake Half-Marathon
DESCRIPTION:The Horse Lake Half-Marathon\, 7-Mile and 5-Mile Trail Runs are held on the 1\,700-acre Horse Lake Reserve\, located in the Wenatchee Foothills near the city of Wenatchee\, and owned by the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust. The reserve is known for its plant life and stunning views of the North Cascades and the Wenatchee River and Columbia River valleys. This 6th-annual trail run event is again a fundraiser for the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust. Proceeds will be go directly to trail construction and maintenance at the Horse Lake Reserve. \nThe Horse Lake event is part of the three-event Wenatchee Valley Trail Run Series put on by RunWenatchee. Other races in the series include the Red Devil Challenge Trail Runs (June 2\, 2018) in the Wenatchee National Forest near Cashmere; and the Oktoberfest Trail Runs (Oct. 20\, 2018) at Leavenworth. \nClick HERE for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Don’t get stranded in the wilderness with an injury! What do you need for emergencies when help is delayed by hours or days? In this course you will learn what to pack\, how to move a victim (building stretchers\, etc.) water rescues\, tourniquets\, possible wilderness injuries\, teamwork (who makes the decisions) and prolonged patient care. This American Red Cross course is appropriate for the seasoned wilderness travelers as well as casual recreationists. This is a Mountaineer Oriented First Aid (MOFA) course. The Land Trust will be stationed at the beginning of the trail to help you get started\, and Land Trust staff\, local volunteers and nature lovers will be stationed along the trail to help you navigate\, complete the scavenger hunt\, and learn more about the plants and animals of our beautiful Foothills. Return to the starting booth with a completed scavenger hunt and win a nature journal to take home! \nYour family can show up anytime between 3:00 and 5:30 pm to start the scavenger hunt. It usually takes families 30 minutes to an hour to complete the hunt. The Wenatchee Racquet and Athletic Club graciously provides some parking. Please park only in designated parking spaces in the WRAC parking lot or along the street. Please note\, there are no bathrooms at Jacobson Preserve. \nRSVPs are appreciated but not required.
