SUMMARY:Plant Foraging Series: Elderberry
DESCRIPTION:When: Tuesday\, September 24\, 2024\nTime: 6:00 pm7:30 pm\n\nWhere: Wenatchee River Institute\, 347 Division St. Leavenworth\, WA\nJoin WRI for our Plant Foraging Series. We will be hosting plant foraging workshops to introduce people to the abundance of local plants and their edible\, medicinal\, and functional uses. Each workshop will feature a new plant at its unique harvest time. Participants will learn hands-on how to identify\, harvest\, propagate\, and make use of the plant. Our goal is to empower people to respectfully and reciprocally engage with the plants that live here. \nThis fall workshop will be with local herbalist Kyra Skaggs. The class is designed to instruct you on foraging and harvesting elderberries and what you can make with them. This will be a hands-on class to become more familiar with this plant. \nKyra owns and operates Balsamroot Botanicals\, a small herbal medicine business focused on making high quality medicines and body care products using locally wildcrafted herbs. She grew up exploring the wildlands of the Pacific Northwest and has always had a special love for plants. Following this passion for plants and the outdoors\, she received a BA in Environmental Education from Western Washington University in 2016 and completed a clinical herbalism program with Wildroot Botanicals in 2020. She started Balsamroot Botanicals in 2022 because she is passionate about using plant medicine to help others take ownership of their health and deepen their connection to the world around them. \nRegistration required.\nSpace is limited\, so sign up fast! Class size: 15 \nCost is Pay What You Can. Choose a price that is reasonable for you. WRI offers this in recognition that not everyone can afford to pay for classes. We hope that people who can\, will pay to help those you cannot. \nEvent Link

SUMMARY:Soul Of the Skagit: Climate Change\, Conservation and Connection-Online
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Christain Murillo \n\n\n\nThe Skagit River is one of the great natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest. It’s watershed is the 2nd largest in Washington State and the largest in the Puget Sound Basin\, contributing more than 30 percent of all the water that fills the deep trough of the Sound\, nearly 10 billion gallons every single day.  \n\n\n\nThe Skagit is around 120 miles long and drains over 3\,100 square miles\, including land in its headwaters in British Columbia. The USGS estimates that the Skagit River transports 2.8 million tons of sediment every year\, delivering about 40 percent of all fluvial sediment entering the Sound at its’ North and South Forks deltas on Skagit Bay. The river’s estuary is the wintering home to a profound number and variety of migratory bird life\, while the wild mosaic of marshes\, farmlands\, eelgrass beds\, beaches and sloughs create habitat for a whopping 80% of western Washington’s waterfowl and 70% of the shorebird population. \n\n\n\nJoin photographer and author Christian Murillo for a 75-minute storytelling and Q+A session. Murillo will share stories from throughout the Skagit River Watershed\, all the way from the glacial headwaters to the delta and the Salish Sea beyond.   \n\n\n\nWe will explore how climate change\, conservation and our relationship with the natural world can benefit from our understanding of the Skagits ecological interconnectedness.   \n\n\n\nWhether you have lived in this great watershed your whole life\, or know next to nothing about it\, you will certainly learn why they call our local valley “The Magic Skagit\,” as well as a new way of looking at the natural world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
