SUMMARY:Forest at the Fringes
DESCRIPTION:A note from the WenOut Staff: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, please contact the organization hosting the event or check their website or Facebook page to verify if the event is continuing to take place. Thank you. \nAll events are open to the public\, and run from 4 to 5 p.m. and will be held at the WSU Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center on Wednesdays from 4-5 P.M. (1100 N. Western Ave.\, Wenatchee). \n4/29/2020 Dr. Tara Barrett\, Research Forester\, USDA Forest Service\n“Forest at the fringes: projecting climate-related tree species shifts in western forests”\nClimate is changing\, and that is altering which tree species can grow where. But predicting how habitat for different species will alter in future decades is complicated given uncertainty in both future climate and imperfect knowledge about impacts on disturbance\, competition\, migration\, and basic biophysical processes. This talk focuses on a research project that combines modelling (to predict current and future tree species habitat) and forest inventory data (to monitor how tree species are currently changing).

SUMMARY:Birding Nahahum Canyon with N.C.W.A.S.
DESCRIPTION:A note from the WenOut Staff: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, please contact the organization hosting the event or check their website or Facebook page to verify if the event is continuing to take place. Thank you. \nBirding Nahahum Canyon with North Central Washington Audubon Society \nJoin Joe Veverka for a morning of birding at Nahahum Canyon outside of Cashmere. We will park near Mile Marker 1 and walk up a service road looking for migrants and returning breeding birds. I expect to find flycatchers\, vireos\, sparrows\, warblers of many species\, as well as Lewis’s and possibly White-headed Woodpeckers. There is also an excellent view of Cashmere backed by Cashmere Mountain. This is a 3.6 mile round trip hike with 600ft of elevation gain. It is a well graded two-track but it can get the heart rate up even at birding pace. Plan to meet at 6:30am at Mile Marker 1(there is a sign) along Nahahum Canyon Road. Bring binoculars\, good shoes\, plenty of water and snacks. Don’t forget a camera. All skill levels welcome. If you have any questions email Joe Veverka at joe_veverka@yahoo.com
