SUMMARY:Light the Loop
DESCRIPTION:On October 10\, 2020\, Serve Wenatchee Valley is bringing back their community event “Light the LOOP”\, only this year it is going to have a different look and goal! “We plan to coordinate lighting the entire 9.6 miles of loop trail”\, says Thom Nees\, Executive Director of Serve Wenatchee Valley. “We are inviting our communities to come together and stand in solidarity hand-in-hand or 6’ apart (depending on what phase the counties will be in and in cooperation with the local health district) to celebrate where we are as a Sign of HOPE!” \nLocal organizations\, businesses\, and churches are invited to adopt a 1/8-mile section of the loop within the circle from Chelan County’s Walla Walla Point Park southward across the Columbia River on the Pedestrian Bridge\, down the paved trail north on the waterfront of East Wenatchee\, crossing the Odabashian Bridge (Highway 97) on the north side of town\, and back to the western side. \nWe will begin to gather at 5:30PM\, get into place and light the loop at 7:17PM. Residents who cannot attend in person are invited to shine their light and sound their HOPE from their own homes at the 7:17PM mark. We are working with local media outlets in order to promote and broadcast the event live on radio\, television\, and online digital channels. Our goal is for everyone in our Valley to stop and join together in HOPE as we emerge from this pandemic. \nThe event is being coordinated by an expanding group of community leaders currently including: Wenatchee Valley Chamber of Commerce\, Digital Media Northwest\, Wenatchee Downtown Association\, Impact! Events\, Link Transit\, Numerica Performing Arts Center\, Chelan County PUD\, Confluence Rotary Club along with other members of our community. \nThe Lighting of the Loop will offer an amazing picture of what can be done when we all come together and Make HOPE Contagious. It will serve for years to come as a Sign of HOPE! \nIf you are a part of an organization or business locally and want to get involved\, you can do that here: https://hipaa.jotform.com/TeresaCraig/light-the-loop-2020 \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Living with Volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest Online
DESCRIPTION:North Cascades Institute Presents- \nFire and Brimstone: Living with Volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest Online \nWhat distinguishes the Pacific Northwest from other regions in the United States? Hint: it’s an explosive geological feature. That’s right – our many active volcanoes! From Mt. Baker and Glacier Peak in the north to Mts. Rainier\, Adams and St. Helens\, these iconic glacier-clad peaks of the Cascade Range are part of a 800 mile-long chain of volcanoes\, according to the USGS\, extending from northern California to southern British Columbia. \n\n\n\n“The volcanoes are the result of the slow slide of dense oceanic crust as it sinks beneath North America (subduction)\, which releases water and melts overlying rock\,” the geological agency explains. “Cascade volcanoes have erupted in the recent past and will erupt again.”Join science educator Gina Roberti for an interactive online presentation which will provide you the tools to observe and understand volcanic processes. Become acquainted with the volcanoes in our region and why we have so much volcanic activity concentrated in this part of the world. You’ll also gain awareness of volcanic hazards to serve as an informed community member. \nIn this virtual program\, we’ll use satellite images and aerial photography to make observations of the major stratovolcanoes of the Cascades range. You’ll learn how to observe evidence of past eruptive processes in the rock record on your next hike or drive over a mountain pass. We will also discuss how the science of volcano monitoring and hazards mitigation has shifted with modern technologies and become familiar with the international collaboration of government agencies. Finally\, we will discuss how we as communities can live safely with volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest. \nYour registration includes a 45-minute interactive comprehensive volcano presentation; dynamic exploration using Google Earth of regional volcanoes; discussion of local community and global scientific responses to volcano activity; and time for Q&A and discussion. \nPrepare to have the top blown off your curiosity in this red-hot program! For more information and to register click here.

SUMMARY:Salmon Bake-A Virtual Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center \nJoin us virtually as Wenatchi/P’squosa elder Randy Lewis presents a traditional blessing of water and salmon. One of the Plateau tribes’ most significant ceremonies is the First Salmon Feast\, marking the arrival of salmon to traditional fishing grounds. Lewis\, the great-great-grandson of Sam Miller\, founder of the Miller-Freer Trading Post\, the anchor to the original City of Wenatchee\, will retell origin stories related to the Creator’s calling of a grand council of the plants and animals to help feed and care for the newest of creations: humans. \nWenatchee Valley Museum members are invited to participate in a feast of salmon\, part of the traditional tribal religion in the Columbia Basin that reinforces the central role salmon and water play for Columbia Basin tribal people in your own home.  With a series of videos\, we will lead you through building a traditional fire pit as well as preparing and cooking the salmon.  Randy will then present the traditional blessing live and you are invited to participate via Zoom. \nYou decide on how much or how little you would like to participate\, whether you go all out and build the fire pit or just cook the fish in your oven\, you won’t want to miss Randy’s retelling of the origin story or the moving and sacred blessing of water and salmon. The live blessing will take place at 3:00 pm on Saturday\, October 17th. \nThe videos and Zoom link will be sent in separate emails. \nPlease register here: 61981.blackbaudhosting.com/61981/Salmon-Bake-Virtual and the videos will be sent to you.  The live ceremony will be held on October 17 at 3:00 pm.  A Zoom link will be sent in a separate email.

SUMMARY:Virtual Watercolor with Molly Hashimoto
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee River Institute Presents- \nLearn how to paint the vibrant colors of autumn in the Cascades with Molly Hashimoto!\nIn this hands-on class\, you will paint along with her\, trying out techniques with fun skill-building exercises\, as well as more complete paintings of landscapes. We will share work at the end of the workshop with lots of positive feedback and helpful suggestions. \nCost: $53 members\, $60 non-members\nLimit of 12 participants\nAfter registering\, you will receive the Zoom link information \nWatercolor Supply List:\n**NOTE: the materials you already have at home are fine! The only item Molly suggests you buy is Arches 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper.\n-Drawing pencil HB (for watercolor under sketches) \n-Artist eraser\, white Mars plastic (made by Staedtler) \n-Paper: Arches 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper\, 100% rag cut to your preferred size for painting. Check out the new horizontal and square format blocks\, too. \n-Lightweight board for paper mounting for ease of painting if you use single sheets with clips or rubber bands. \n-Brushes: Sable or sable/synthetic blend watercolor brushes: #12\, #6\, and #4 round\, ¾” flat.\nOther sizes and types are optional. Do not buy a synthetic brush in #12 or #8 size: they are too stiff and do not lay smooth washes. Synthetics are fine for #4 and smaller sizes. I like Da Vinci Maestro sable rounds the best\, but they are expensive. A sable/synthetic blend works well and is cheaper. Other brushes I like using are smaller flat brushes with chisel edges (which are useful for softening edges\, and lifting out)\, riggers or liners for small line work. \n-Water and water containers or waterbrushes \n-Palette: Alvin 18 pan with blue waterproof seal\, filled with the following tube paints:\nPaints: I use Daniel Smith watercolors\nReds: Cool: permanent alizarin crimson\nWarm: pyrrol scarlet\nBlues: Cool: phthalo blue (green shade)\nWarm: phthalo blue (red shade) or French ultramarine blue or ultramarine blue\nYellows: Cool: hansa yellow light\nWarm: hansa yellow medium\nViolet: carbazole violet\nBrowns and golds: quinacridone burnt orange\, yellow ochre or raw sienna (you can substitute burnt umber or burnt sienna for the quinacridone burnt orange).\nOther colors you may want to add\, in order of their usefulness: cobalt blue\, hansa yellow deep or new gamboge\, perylene green\, perinone orange\, indanthrone blue\, Chinese white or Winsor and Newton permanent white gouache-it has more covering power than Chinese white. \n-Paper towels\, rags \n-Optional: Winsor and Newton Masking Fluid\, white pens (I like Posca paint pens for corrections)\nSea sponge for corrections\, Cheap Joe’s Fritch scrub brushes\, also for corrections \n\n\n\n\n\nCONTACT INFO\n Rachel Bishop\n rbishop@wenatcheeriverinstitute.org\n 509-548-0181 ext 5

SUMMARY:Prognosis Planet Earth 2020: 50 Years after the first Earth Day with Joan Qazi
DESCRIPTION:Pybus University presents:\nPrognosis Planet Earth 2020: 50 Years after the first Earth Day\, with Joan Qazi \nThis is a FREE virtual event. Register using Pybus University’s link below. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/prognosis-planet-earth-2020-50-years-after-the-first-earth-day-tickets-115769845725 \nThe fiftieth anniversary of the first Earth Day is a significant time to reflect on the health of our planet and on what kind of ancestors we want to be for those who celebrate Earth Day’s 100th anniversary. This course is designed to rethink our legacy away from destruction and towards restoration and reconnection with the natural world and our place in it. We start by asking\, what is the state of our planet in terms of climate\, species extinctions and vital ecosystems? You will learn about the basic science of climate change and its various impacts here in North Central Washington and abroad with data gathered from NASA\, NOAA\, Carbon Brief\, and UW’s Climate Impacts Group. We will then put this data into the context of climate justice—who is most vulnerable to harm\, and climate grief—how can we deal with this harm and potential losses? The best antidote often seems to be action\, and we will need it at all levels from individual to international\, from personal to policy. We will conclude the class with an overview of existing solutions to help mitigate the crisis and then envision how each of us can use our skills or talents to take appropriate action and become a better 100th Earth Day ancestor. \n(FYI Reference to be explained in the talk: Robin Kimmerer asks in her essay\, On Choosing to Belong to a Place\, “What kind of ancestor do you want to be?”) \nPresenter Bio: Joan Qazi is a professor of Geography and Sustainability at Wenatchee Valley College. She is on the board of Sustainable Wenatchee and trained as a Climate Reality Leader\, teaching and researching about climate change for 25 years. As a teacher and a mother\, Joan wants to find ways to meet our needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Becoming a Conscious Consumer
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by NCW Libraries & Sustainable Wenatchee\n\nDid you know that the things we buy can impact our personal health as well as the environment\, society\, and the economy?\nJoin us for Becoming a Conscious Consumer: The high cost of cheap stuff and how to be a better buyer to learn more.\n\nSustainable Wenatchee Executive Director\, Jana Fischback will help us identify ways to make more responsible purchases. Jana will cover the ethical problem of all the cheap stuff that we buy\, including global environmental and societal implications. Now\, that can get a little depressing\, so then we’ll talk about solutions!\n\nFirst\, Jana will share ideas for how to buy less. And then\, she will teach us how to buy smarter in four main categories: clothes\, groceries\, everyday household goods\, and electronics. She will also briefly touch on the issues of personal health\, greenwashing\, and advocating for manufacturers to take responsibility for the environmental cost of their products.\n\nSustainable Wenatchee is a nonprofit that promotes a culture of environmental stewardship and social sustainability in the Wenatchee valley. Jana is a Wenatchee native and earned her Master’s in Environmental Studies from Evergreen State College. She worked as a Sustainability Coordinator on the west side before returning to the valley in 2016. She co-founded Sustainable Wenatchee a year later. She is passionate about showing how social justice and economic sustainability are both intricately tied to environmental issues.\n\nAll NCW Libraries’ virtual events are free and open to the public. Events will be held through the Zoom digital meeting platform. To participate\, register. Registrants will receive an email with the Zoom meeting information. During this event\, attendees hear from the presenter and then have an opportunity to submit questions to the presenter to answer live.\n\nFor more information click here.
