SUMMARY:Wild Ideas: Everything You Wanted to Know About Pacific Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Chelan Douglas Land Trust: Wild Ideas-Everything You Wanted to Know About Pacific Salmon But Never Thought to Ask \nThis year for Wild Ideas\, we are exploring the hidden aspects of our local ecosystems through short Zoom talks with experts on three Thursdays in March. \nEverything you wanted to know about Pacific Salmon but never thought to ask. \nWhy do salmon travel hundreds of miles from freshwater to the ocean and back to complete their life cycle? Why are there seven species of Pacific salmon but only one Atlantic salmon species? How do salmon find their way home? Is there really such a thing as a saber-toothed salmon? Join fish ecologist and conservation biologist Tracy Bowerman for the answers to these questions and more. \nTracy has a Ph.D. in aquatic ecology and has studied salmon and charr throughout the Pacific Northwest for the past 14 years. Her research includes topics ranging from cutting open dead fish to count how many eggs they have left\, to modeling how much energy it takes for an adult salmon to travel 600 miles upstream over 8 dams and 8\,000 feet of elevation. Tracy loves learning about salmon\, as well as fishing for and eating them. When not researching salmon\, Tracy can be found exploring North Central Washington’s mountains and rivers. \nThis event is free. Registration is required\, but you can register up to the day of the event. Register here. \nWe’ll have a quick introduction\, then a 15-20 minute talk (pre-recorded to reduce technical difficulties)\, followed by a Q&A with the speaker. So feel free to get comfy\, grab a tasty beverage\, and join us!

SUMMARY:Indigenous Language Class
DESCRIPTION:Join Annette Timentwa\, Language Curriculum Coordinator for the Colville Confederated Tribes Language Department\, for this 5-week basic introductory class on the nxaʔamxčín language. The class will be covering Moses-Columbian language history\, phonetics/orthography\, vocabulary and grammar. Each class will cover 5-10 words or phrases\, along with some simple grammar concepts to try and make simple nxaʔamxčín sentences. Classes will cover family terms\, colors\, numbers\, and feelings because Annette feels that these are lessons that can be used at home and daily. Annette will be utilizing audio\, visual\, and video tools after the first class covers basic linguistic concepts and history. Participation is not mandatory\, but always encouraged- as I know Zoom can be a little intimidating at first. Using your free time to learn another language can be difficult\, but Annette commends anyone willing to try and get out of their comfort zone! \nlámlamt/ thank you. \nCost: Pay What You Can\nWe want to make this class available to those looking to learn their own language. Part of the funds collected will go to the Colville Confederated Tribes Language Program. \nClass limited to 20participants. SUMMARY:The Ethical Photographer: A Wildlife Photographer's Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by North Cascades Institute \nInstructor Mukul Soman \nClass Tuition: $15 \nThis is an online class. \nMukul Soman manages to get some breathtaking shots of wildlife. Looking at his images you’d swear he was right there with the animals. But in fact Mukul works hard to acquire his images while impacting his subjects as little as possible\, thereby preserving their wild way of life. And yet his photographs capture extremly evocative\, dramatic\, and beautiful moments. \nThis presentation by the Seattle-based photographer promises eye-popping work accompanied by a tempered and respectful approach to these subjects that Mukul\, and all of us\, so dearly love. \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Wild Ideas: Unbust the Crust: Restoring Unseen Desert Diversity
DESCRIPTION:The Chelan Douglas Land Trust presents: Wild Ideas-Unbust the Crust: Restoring Unseen Desert Diversity \nThis year for Wild Ideas\, we are exploring the hidden aspects of our local ecosystems through short Zoom talks with experts on three Thursdays in March. \nExplore the fascinating world of biocrusts\, hidden in plain sight. \nBiological soil crust (biocrusts) are the community of lichens\, mosses\, cyanobacteria\, and more which bind together the soil surface in drylands. Often overlooked\, biocrusts are an integral member of arid ecosystems and have complex influences on water infiltration\, soil stability\, nutrient cycling\, and plant communities. This talk will cover their biology\, ecological role\, and the exciting new field of biocrust as a restoration tool. \nLydia Bailey is currently pursuing a PhD with Dr. Matt Bowker and Dr. Anita Antoninka at Northern Arizona University. Born in Alabama\, she moved west to get her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science – Biology from Whitman College in Walla Walla\, WA. I found a new home in arid landscapes and have spent the last ten years living and working across the western US. Beginning as a botanist\, I worked for The Nature Conservancy\, National Park Service\, and Bureau of Land Management before beginning graduate school in Flagstaff. My dissertation focuses on the use of soil organisms to improve restoration outcomes on highly disturbed areas of the Mojave Desert\, in collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management. \nThis event is free. Registration is required\, but you can register up to the day of the event. Register here. \nWe’ll have a quick introduction\, then a 15-20 minute talk (pre-recorded to reduce technical difficulties)\, followed by a Q&A with the speaker. SUMMARY:The History of Rock: Geologic Knowledge in the North Cascades
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nInstructor: Gina Roberti \nClass Tuition: $15 \nThis is an online class. \nWhat makes the mountains of the North Cascades so distinct? Why do these mountains rise so abruptly amidst the surrounding landscape? Why are river canyons cut so deeply\, and the spires so jagged and sharp? \nLearn about the complex geologic history of the North Cascades through the stories of people who came to read the rocks. Since the 1950s\, geologists have sought to explain why the North Cascades host so many distinct types of rocks with such varied and complex metamorphic history. \nLearn about the people who seek to explain what forces shape the landscape of the past and continue to shape the landscape into the future. Join Gina Roberti for the story of the geologic history of the North Cascades and how it has been interpreted over time. \nIf you can’t make this specific date or time\, you can still register and we will send you a link to the workshop to view on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time approximately one week after the workshop. \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Sign Tracking & Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Introductory Series to Wildlife Tracking \nHosted by Wenatchee River Institute \nEvery time we step outside of our door\, there are myriad stories to be told of the comings and goings of animals in the world\, and one of the oldest human capacities is to read and interpret these stories. The art and science of tracking offers a holistic ecological window into the happenings of the living world around us. \nIn this 3-part series\, you will gain a foundational introduction to the vast world of wildlife tracking. We will explore:\n• The art of inquiry and engaging curiosity in the natural world\n• Basic wildlife foot physiology and morphology\n• Clear print identification\n• Concepts in behavior and wildlife sign interpretation\n• How wildlife interacts with landscapes \nLimit of 30 participants. You can sign up for individual classes or the whole series.\nCost: $15 per class\, $32 (members) whole series\, $40 (non-members) whole series\nREGISTER FOR INDIVIDUAL CLASSES UNDER THE CALENDAR EVENT FOR THAT SPECIFIC DATE. \nEach of the session will be online and last for 75-90 minutes. We will cover three core concepts of wildlife tracking: \nApril 20th – Sign Tracking and Ecology\nIn this final session\, we will look at all the ways that animals leave “tracks” on the landscape that are not just from their feet. Sign tracking involves taking a larger ecological perspective into all of the ways animals go about their daily lives in the world. This practice brings us into the fuller story of the ways that animals use the landscape\, and that the landscape has shaped them. \nEnvironmental educators\, naturalists\, outdoor leaders\, or simply amateur naturalists are who have been interested in reading the stories left behind on the landscape are sure to find this 3-part series fun and engaging. \nInstructor Bio:\nMarcus is a naturalist\, educator\, facilitator\, and photographer. He has worked in wilderness education\, outdoor leadership\, and conservation for numerous organizations and communities across North America and Europe. He is engaged in telling stories that bring to light and life\, the complexity of humans living in the 21st century. Marcus currently lives in the Snoqualmie Valley in Washington State\, just east of Seattle. He is the Lead Instructor for an internationally renowned environmental leadership immersion program for adults at the Wilderness Awareness School in Duvall\, WA\, and is also an evaluator with Cybertracker Conservation\, an organization dedicated to providing leading edge assessment and certification in the art and science of wildlife tracking across the globe. \n\n\n\n\n\nCONTACT INFO\n Rachel Bishop\n rbishop@wenatcheeriverinstitute.org\n 509-548-0181 ext 5

SUMMARY:Alpinism & Consumerism: Montanismo y Consumismo no es lo mismo
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nThis is an online class. \nInstructor Stuart Vazquez \nClass Tuition: $5 \nJoin us for a conversation with Stuart Vázquez\, founder and director of the Eco-Lógica Magazine educational project. For more than 20 years\, Stuart has followed the solid waste route to understand how to reduce waste generation. As a mountaineer and environmentalist\, Stuart includes proposals in his presentations that invite us to reflect and learn alternatives to reduce waste generation and its connection with the natural areas that we enjoy so much when we practice outdoor activities. \nThis conversation\, primarily shared in English\, will have Spanish weaved throughout so that both language speakers have a great experience. We will find that the connection with nature and outdoor activities is something personal that only you can experience in your own way and at your own pace\, without the need to spend large amounts of money. We will learn alternatives that can help us to reduce waste generation\, save resources\, and enjoy nature. \nWe will talk about the way in which solid waste\, as indicators of our consumption habits\, can give us ideas to reduce consumerism\, modify our lifestyles and move towards a more sustainable system that can help us reduce the impact of solid waste in the environment; one of the causes of climate change. \nIf you can’t make this specific date or time\, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the class on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time after the program. \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Heather Ecology & Restoration Efforts
DESCRIPTION:Join the Washington Native Plant Society (W.N.P.S.) to celebrate Native Plant Appreciation Month! Join W.N.P.S. for a free webinar on Heather Ecology and Restoration Efforts which will help us all learn more about restoration efforts in popular day-hike locations along the North Cascades Highway: \n“Heather Ecology and Restoration Efforts” with Kelly Baraibar\, USFS Biologist in the Methow Valley Ranger District. \nHeather provides some subalpine plant communities with the essential requirements to exist in harsh conditions. They form hardy mats which trap soil\, water and nutrients\, and provide protection for other plant species to establish. Yet it only takes about 20 footsteps to cause a heather mat to begin to die\, leading to the unraveling of the subalpine community in which it exists. Kelly will present the ecology of the heather species found in our area\, species distribution\, colonization strategies\, heather adaptations\, climate change\, and other fascinating facts. Her talk will also cover restoration efforts in popular day hike locations along the North Cascades Highway and challenges posed in the face of upward trends in the recreation. \nSpeaker Bio: \nKelly Baraibar\, U.S.F.S Botanist in Winthrop \nKelly is the District Botanist on the Methow Valley Ranger District in Winthrop.  Her career began with the Forest Service nearly 25 years ago as a wildland firefighter.  She spent the summer fighting fire while saving money to travel the world in the winter months.  When she grew weary of rappelling out of helicopters\, Kelly decided to hit the books and complete her degree at the University of Washington.  Kelly was the last graduating class at the U of W to earn a degree dedicated strictly to Botany.  Soon after graduation\, she was offered a permanent position on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.   Her first job as a permanent was spent between the Wenatchee River Ranger District and the Methow Valley Ranger District.  After a summer season\, she transferred to Okanogan to work with the Forest Service Ecology Program.  In 2010\, she accepted the District Botanist position on the Methow Valley R.D.  Kelly enjoys paddle boarding with her daughters down the Methow River in the summer\, and skiing as much as she can in the winter. \nHer evening talk is sponsored by our local Wenatchee Valley Chapter of the WNPS. \nThe hour-long webinar will occur on April 27 at 7pm; \nFree registration and for more information click here: https://www.wnps.org/wv-events/calendar/1010 \n

SUMMARY:Wolves in Washington: Updates from WDFW & the Wolf Advisory Group
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nClass Tuition: $15 \nAfter nearly being eradicated in the early 1900s\, the gray wolf (Canis lupus)\, a native Washington species\, has naturally returned to the state. A wolf pack with pups was confirmed in July 2008 in western Okanogan and northern Chelan counties and represented the first fully documented breeding by wolves in the state since the 1930s! Since then\, the state’s wolf population has increased at an average rate of 28% every year\, and many other wolf packs have been confirmed. \nThe first to return to Washington came on their own from existing packs in Idaho\, Montana\, Wyoming\, Oregon\, and British Columbia. Although there have been no federal or state efforts to proactively reintroduce wolves to Washington\, they have successfully repopulated parts of eastern Washington and the North Cascades. \nAccording to Conservation Northwest\, at the end of 2018\, Washington was home to a minimum of 126 wolves\, 27 wolf packs and 15 successful breeding pairs! \nJoin us for a Zoom presentation with biologists from the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife. They will share an overview of the status of wolves in the state\, provide updates on current wolf packs and take questions too. \nParticipants will learn how they can stay updated\, get involved\, and how the Washington Wolf Advisory Group is working to promote equitable\, inclusive\, and respectful dialogue and decision-making among diverse people to foster durable peace by transforming the root causes of social conflict and providing high quality recommendations on wolf recovery\, conservation\, and management. \nIf you can’t make this specific date or time\, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the class on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time after the program. \nFor more information click here.

We have added a new option called Rucking.\nRUCK•ING [VERB] // Walking/hiking with a weighted rucksack (aka backpack). It implies action\, energy\, and purpose. Rucking requires strength\, endurance\, and character — and builds it\, too. \nRucking is the foundation of Special Forces training\, but is also a great alternative to running for those that are not able to run but are avid hikers\, walkers\, and fast packers. \nMany of us have taken on rucking as another way to stay fit and challenge ourselves on the trails\, so we decided to add this to our event schedule! \nThe rules: Complete the 25K\, 10-mile or 5-mile wearing the pack. Special award given to those that complete the event wearing the pack. \nWeight Requirements:\nBodyweight under 150 lbs: 20 lbs + Rucksack/Backpack\nBodyweight over 150 lbs: 30 lbs + Rucksack/Backpack \nNeed a pack\, weighted plates or other gear? SUMMARY:Spring Snake Count in the Methow Valley
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nInstructor: John Rohrer and Scott Fitkin \nClass Tuition: $110 \nAt first glance\, our snake friends get a bad rap\, yet they become fascinating\, even personable\, once you learn about their special niche within our local ecosystem. \nThese cold-blooded creatures need hiding spaces to take refuge from the hot and cold\, while also needing places to bask in sunlight to warm their bodies\, and the Methow Valley is a premier classroom for finding them in their natural habitats. \nJoin field biologists John and Scott for an intimate look at Eastern Washington’s reptiles and amphibians in the magical Methow Valley! Located on the sunny side of the North Cascades\, we’ll spend our day in the field searching for these remarkable critters in sunny meadows and dramatic canyons while also learning about the latest scientific research on local populations. Together\, we’ll survey for snakes in drier climes\, going through areas near an active den sites hopefully increasing the probability of finding a variety of snakes. \nOur team will be recording snake observations for the Center for Snake Conservation’s nationwide effort to create an instantaneous snapshot of the continent’s snake populations. \nExpand your intimacy with the animal kingdom in this small-group\, socially-distanced field excursion with two of our state’s leading field biologists. \nFor more information click here.
