The 25K\, 10-mile\, and 5-mile Horse Lake Trail Runs are held on an amazing 1\,700-acre reserve\, owned and managed by the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust\, in the Wenatchee Foothills. \nStart times \n25K — 7 a.m. \n10-Mile — 7:30 a.m. \n5-Mile — 8 a.m. \nCOVID-19 Protocols \nDepending on COVID-19 conditions at the time of the race\, we will be following additional precautions including wave starts\, aid station protocols and requirements for mask use. More details will be available within a month of the race depending on requirements in place and the state of the pandemic. \nSwag \nEach entrant will receive a RunWenatchee running mask/buff\, a reusable cup for aid stations\, and a commemorative Horse Lake race medal. T-shirts are available for purchase. \nRace Day Information \nPacket pick-up and race day information will be posted closer to the event date. \nParking/Shuttle Service \nThere will be parking available at the trailhead and a parking plan will be implemented within a month of the race. \nShuttle service MAY BE possible for the event\, but again will be determined within a month of the event depending on Health District requirements and the state of the pandemic. \nCourse Description \nThe 25K\, 10-Mile and 5-Mile courses encompass the incredible single track and double track trails of the Horse Lake Reserve. We have added a new option called Rucking.\nRUCK•ING [VERB] // Walking/hiking with a weighted rucksack (aka backpack). It implies action\, energy\, and purpose. Rucking requires strength\, endurance\, and character — and builds it\, too. \nRucking is the foundation of Special Forces training\, but is also a great alternative to running for those that are not able to run but are avid hikers\, walkers\, and fast packers. \nMany of us have taken on rucking as another way to stay fit and challenge ourselves on the trails\, so we decided to add this to our event schedule! \nThe rules: Complete the 25K\, 10-mile or 5-mile wearing the pack. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nInstructor: John Rohrer and Scott Fitkin \nClass Tuition: $110 \nAt first glance\, our snake friends get a bad rap\, yet they become fascinating\, even personable\, once you learn about their special niche within our local ecosystem. \nThese cold-blooded creatures need hiding spaces to take refuge from the hot and cold\, while also needing places to bask in sunlight to warm their bodies\, and the Methow Valley is a premier classroom for finding them in their natural habitats. \nJoin field biologists John and Scott for an intimate look at Eastern Washington’s reptiles and amphibians in the magical Methow Valley! Located on the sunny side of the North Cascades\, we’ll spend our day in the field searching for these remarkable critters in sunny meadows and dramatic canyons while also learning about the latest scientific research on local populations. DESCRIPTION:Red Devil Trail Runs\n\nRed Devil 50K\, 25K and 10K\nJune 5\, 2021\nSandcreek Trailhead\, Wenatchee National Forest\, Cashmere\, WA\n \nWe are excited to be back on these great Wenatchee National Forest trails south of Cashmere! The 50K\, 25K and 10K runs held on single-track trails and old logging roads have earned a reputation as some of the most challenging in the Pacific Northwest! \nStart times \n50K — 6:30 a.m. \n25K — 7:30 a.m. \n10K — 8 a.m. \n  \n50K \nThe Red Devil 50K has quickly become one of the Pacific Northwest’s must-do races. The race starts and ends at Sandcreek Trailhead and includes the Red Devil\, Red Hill\, Devil’s Gulch and Mission Ridge trail systems in the Wenatchee-Okanagan National Forest\, outside of Cashmere\, WA. These trails form an incredibly challenging 7\,200 feet of climbing to challenge even the most seasoned trail runner. We will have two fully staffed and supplied aid stations on the 50K course\, one of which you will pass twice at miles 9 and 26. The other you will pass at mile 17. \nThere will be a water only\, self-serve station at mile 5. At mile 9\, 17 and 26 we will have the usual Ultra running fare and plenty of Hammer Nutrition products as well. \nDepending on COVID-19 conditions at the time of the race\, we will be following additional precautions including wave starts\, aid station protocols and requirements for mask use. There is one water/electrolyte station\, which you pass twice as the course is out and back. \nMaps \n50K map \n25K map \n10K map \nEvent Details \nEach finisher will receive an iconic Red Devil medal\, a RunWenatchee face mask/buff\, shuttle transportation to and from the start/finish\, staffed aid stations that have full COVID-19 safety precautions in place. and plenty of food and hydration products. You will have to be able to move at an average of 3-3.5 mph to make the cut-offs. We reserve the right to pull you off the course if you are behind these times. DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Erratics\, Ice Age Floods Institute’s next Zoom program\, “Plate Tectonics and Cascadia Earthquakes\,” will be on Tuesday June 8 at 7:00 PM with Kelsay Stanton\, Erratics past vice-president and current UW PhD candidate. \nCalifornia is known for its earthquakes\, but what about the rest of the west coast? What are our seismic hazards? Why don’t we have as many earthquakes as our more southerly neighbor? This class is a wildlife track and sign certification class through CyberTracker North America. David’s approach to this class is highly interactive\, engaging participants in identification and interpretation of tracks and signs. Lots of time for questions and discussion is built in. This style is an excellent way to learn and investigate\, with the chance to achieve a wildlife tracking certificate through Cybertracker Conservation. Certificates are awarded on three levels. You will not want to miss this opportunity! \nCybertracker classes provide an opportunity for quality\, focused learning from some of the best trackers in the country. They are designed to further participant’s tracking knowledge\, as well as to rigorously test and document their current tracking skill set. Lichen can be found on every corner of the earth\, from the poles to the tropics. They are fascinating organisms with many properties\, such as\, food\, medicine\, and dye. \nBridging two kingdoms of life\, lichens are a composite life form. They feature a fungal component as well as a botanical. This accessible workshop provides you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the most unfamiliar inhabitants of your backyard! \nAstonishing variety and near-omnipresence make lichens awfully hard to describe and conceptualize. In this workshop we’ll visit living specimens in the forest to illustrate the basics. The 100-acre woods feature a variety of lichens\, including those of the main growth types that will help us wrap our heads around the incredible variability of shape and form. \nEvan is a program coordinator and field educator at North Cascades Institute who fancies all things fungal in his free time.
