The race starts and ends at Sandcreek Trailhead and includes the Red Devil\, Red Hill\, Devil’s Gulch and Mission Ridge trail systems in the Wenatchee-Okanagan National Forest\, outside of Cashmere\, WA. These trails form an incredibly challenging 7\,200 feet of climbing to challenge even the most seasoned trail runner. We will have two fully staffed and supplied aid stations on the 50K course\, one of which you will pass twice at miles 9 and 26. The other you will pass at mile 17. \nThere will be a water only\, self-serve station at mile 5. At mile 9\, 17 and 26 we will have the usual Ultra running fare and plenty of Hammer Nutrition products as well. \nDepending on COVID-19 conditions at the time of the race\, we will be following additional precautions including wave starts\, aid station protocols and requirements for mask use. More details will be available within a month of the race depending on requirements in place and the state of the pandemic. \nFor a race report from 2019\, check out Team LaSportiva’s Maria Dalzot’s blog post.\nhttps://www.mariadalzotrd.com/thoughts/2019/6/4/red-devil-challenge-50k \n25K \nThe 25K — also a loop with the start and finish at Sandcreek Trailhead — includes the Red Devil\, Red Hill and Devil’s Gulch single track trails\, features close to 4\,300 feet of elevation gain and is the first 9 miles of the 50K course. One water only\, self-serve station will be located at mile 5 and a fully staffed aid station will be at mile 9. We will have the usual Ultra running fare\, to include PB and J sandwiches\, pickles and pickle juice\, water\, electrolyte drink\, cookies\, candy\, pretzels\, fruit\, gels\, etc. \n10K \nThe out-and-back 10K\, which also starts and ends at the Sandcreek Trailhead\, and is on well-maintained logging and Forest Service roads\, has an elevation gain of 1\,000 feet. More details will be available within a month of the race depending on requirements in place and the state of the pandemic. \nShuttle Service \nWe are planning on having COVID-19 compliant shuttle service to and from the start/finish area for racers only. Depending on COVID-19 conditions at the time of the race\, we will be following additional precautions including wave starts and requirements for mask use. More details will be available within a month of the race depending on requirements in place and the state of the pandemic. \nRaces are going cupless for 2021! \nWe are including a reusable\, collapsible drinking cup for all runners for our trail runs starting in 2021\, thus reducing our environmental impact by not having paper cups littering the course or in the landfill. \nCut-Off Times \nOur cut off times for the 50K are generous and allow for people to run the course. You will have to be able to move at an average of 3-3.5 mph to make the cut-offs. We reserve the right to pull you off the course if you are behind these times. At Mile 9 and 26 (Devils Gulch Trailhead) is an extraction point\, where runners can be shuttled back to the start/finish area if injured or do not meet the cut-off criteria. Here are the cut off times: \nMile 9 (Devils Gulch TH): 3 hours\nMile 17 (Henley’s Camp): 6 hours\nMile 26 (Devils Gulch TH): 8 hours\nFinish Line: 10 hours

DESCRIPTION:SINGLE RACE FORMAT RETURNS!\nFor 2021\, we are returning Echo Valley to its traditional format\, with a 1 mile kid’s race\, 10K\, half-marathon and 50K. Echo Valley remains an excellent race choice for many. The 1 mile kid’s race\, camping and location make it ideal for families\, while the 50k is a great course for a first time 50K runner or someone wanting to set a 50K PR time. \nBased in the pristine wine country of Lake Chelan\, Echo Valley offers stunning views\, runnable (is that even a word?) single tracks\, heaps of sunshine and a retreat from everyday life! \nTo top off this weekend away in the mountains\, you can camp pre- and post-race. Come and share an amazing weekend with us; we promise you will head back to work Monday full of heart and strength of mind! See below for details on accommodations. \nThis race is sponsored by Vin du Lac of Chelan\, one of the top Wineries in the region\, named “Winery of the Year” in 2010. \nA special thanks to Company Creek Pizza for supporting the Echo Valley races. SUMMARY:Summer Songbirds Sojourn
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nThink spring birding season is almost over? Think again! Pacific Northwest birdwatching excitement extends into the summer season. And who better than local avian aficionado Libby Mills to help us direct our curiosity? Drawing on her 50 years of bird watching experience\, Libby will point out the potential second clutches of resident chickadees\, wrens and robins as well as searching out just arrived tropical warblers\, grosbeaks and flycatchers. \nThe course will be located on private land outside of Deming\, in our socially-distanced small group with no public crowds. We are extremely lucky to have access to this unique area – the first time an Institute course has been offered at this property! \nThe day will start relatively early and move between a few different micro-habitats on the landscape. This will allow us to see our bird neighbors late in the breeding season and in their respective summer activities. \nThere will be opportunities to listen to birds sing and respond on their territories\, as some species’ young will be making their first sojourns into independence! \nClass cost: $110 \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Plate Tectonics & Cascadia Earthquakes
DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Erratics\, Ice Age Floods Institute’s next Zoom program\, “Plate Tectonics and Cascadia Earthquakes\,” will be on Tuesday June 8 at 7:00 PM with Kelsay Stanton\, Erratics past vice-president and current UW PhD candidate. \nCalifornia is known for its earthquakes\, but what about the rest of the west coast? What are our seismic hazards? Why don’t we have as many earthquakes as our more southerly neighbor? This talk examines the tectonic setting for the Pacific Northwest and its many seismic sources\, such as: \n\n– “The Big Ones\,” megathrust earthquakes caused by the Juan de Fuca plate subducting under North America;\n– Slow slip earthquakes and episodic tremor and slip;\n– Deep crustal earthquakes\, such as the 2000 Nisqually event;\n– And shallow crustal earthquakes\, such as the 900 Seattle fault earthquake\, and the 1872 Central Washington earthquake from the fault near Entiat.\n\nKelsay will show how these fit into the tectonic picture\, and what it means for shaking in Central Washington and beyond. \nPlease click the link below to join the webinar at 7:00 PM on Tuesday\, June 8:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86120141272\nWebinar ID: 861 2014 1272

SUMMARY:Discovering Local Birds with Mary Gallagher
DESCRIPTION:Event by Plain Valley Adventure Women \nLocation: Tall Timber Ranch 27875 White River Road Leavenworth\, WA \nMary is a local bird enthusiast and enjoys sharing the joy birds can bring to your life. Bring your curiosity and let’s see what we can discover about our local birds as we walk the varied habitats of the Tall Timber valley between the Napeequa and White River confluence. We will stroll through meadows\, forests and wetlands exploring the riparian habitat and learning the art of identifying birds. Before this walk\, spend some time thinking about a bird you know\, such as a robin or a crow. Ask yourself the following questions: What size and shape (silhouette) does it have? What do its calls or songs sound like? What do you usually see that particular bird do? Where do you typically see them? What time(s) of year do you see them? \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Lichen it with Evan
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nCost for class: $50 \nAmong the most quizzical and overlooked of all life on our planet is the lovely lichen. Lichen can be found on every corner of the earth\, from the poles to the tropics. They are fascinating organisms with many properties\, such as\, food\, medicine\, and dye. \nBridging two kingdoms of life\, lichens are a composite life form. They feature a fungal component as well as a botanical. This accessible workshop provides you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the most unfamiliar inhabitants of your backyard! \nAstonishing variety and near-omnipresence make lichens awfully hard to describe and conceptualize. In this workshop we’ll visit living specimens in the forest to illustrate the basics. The 100-acre woods feature a variety of lichens\, including those of the main growth types that will help us wrap our heads around the incredible variability of shape and form. \nEvan is a program coordinator and field educator at North Cascades Institute who fancies all things fungal in his free time. He has taken numerous visitors “lichen hikin'” around the Environmental Learning Center and this workshop is a way to bring his knowledge to the Bellingham area. \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Sauk Mountain Wildflower Wander
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nInstructor: Mari Schramm \nClass Tuition: $110 \nPlant identification is an essential naturalist practice. Wherever you go\, you can introduce yourself to the botanical residents you meet! As the poet Gary Snyder instructs us: \nWhile seemingly complex at first blush\, plant ID is simplified if you learn to recognize not the species\, not the genus\, but the family of the plants you find. \nThis workshop takes place on the quintessential Sauk Mountain with a marvelous meander with Mari Schramm. Sauk Mountain provides incredible views of the valley lowlands\, the Skagit River\, the Salish Sea and the sea of peaks that is North Cascades National Park. The steep-but-easy trail winding up delivers us to subalpine meadows where Mari will orient us to the lupines\, penstemons\, fireweeds\, paintbrushes\, lilies and other wonders blooming below our feet. We have timed this hike at the typical peak of wildflower bloom\, making it easy to observe all of their parts. \nMari\, a long-time instructor at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center\, will instruct you in the use of a hand lens\, botanical field guides\, and even a dissecting microscope. \nBy the end of the day you will know how to recognize common northwest plant families\, and you’ll find an entirely new layer of interest and wonder on any trail. And the Sauk Mt. trail is probably the most spectacular locale to learn these skills – just don’t let the views distract you from the workshop! \nWondering what you might see on this trip? Read a Sauk Mountain trip report from around the same week from last year on our blog: blog.ncascades.org \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Homewaters: A Human & Natural History of the Puget Sound
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nInstructor: David Williams \nClass Tuition: $15 \nWhat lies beneath the surface of the waters near Seattle? How have people and other living creatures engaged with Puget Sound? What are today’s challenges and opportunities? \nJoin Institute Education Manager Molly Harrigan as she interviews David B. Williams about his newest book\, Homewaters: A Human and Natural History of Puget Sound. In offering a hopeful perspective on how we can work together to make Puget Sound more habitable for all\, his book comes at a critical moment as residents are working to create a more nuanced and complex picture of this beautiful but suffering place. \nTheir conversation will dive deep into the mysteries of the Sound’s kelp forests. Through research and interviews with archaeologists\, biologists\, and tribal authorities\, David traces how generations of humans have interacted with these underwater ecosystems\, which are as complex as any terrestrial ecosystem. We will dive into the attributes of kelp itself as well as the many species—rockfish\, salmon and crabs—that live\, depend\, and thrive in and around the kelp. \nDavid B. Williams is an author\, naturalist and tour guide whose award-winning books include Too High and Too Steep: Reshaping Seattle’s Topography\, Seattle Walks: Discovering History and Nature in the City and Stories in Stone: Travels Through Urban Geology. Williams is also a Curatorial Associate at the Burke Museum. \nThis conversation between passionate naturalists about our beloved homewaters is not to be missed! \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Corvids Mythology: From Ancient Greece to Today's Salish Sea
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nInstructor Kaeli Swift \nClass Tuition $15 \nWhether you are keen on them or not\, crows\, ravens and other corvids are often daily parts of our lives. They live and nest throughout the human world from cities to rural communities\, exploiting our resources and watching us perhaps even more closely than we watch them. \nBut our relationship to these intelligent and sociable birds extends far beyond our contemporary experiences with them\, reaching as far back as humans have been telling and recording stories. \nRavens are associated with Apollo in Greek mythology. In the Book of Genesis\, Noah releases a raven from the ark after the great flood to test whether the waters have receded. In Norse mythology\, Odin is accompanied by two ravens – Huginn and Muninn – that serve as his eyes and ears: huginn meaning “thought” and muninn meaning “memory.” The depiction of a three-legged crow is prevalent in various mythologies and arts of East Asia\, while in China magpies are associated with children and marriage. The Kingdom of England will fall\, according to legend\, if the ravens that live at the Tower of London are removed. And\, closer to home\, ravens play a prominent role in the stories of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast\, including the Tsimishians\, Haidas\, Heiltsuks\, Tlingits\, Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish. \nJoin us online as Dr. Kaeli Swift walks us through the various mythology that surrounds corvids from their symbolism in ancient Greece to the creation stories of the Coast Salish people\, and how we can use best practices to celebrate the role of corvids in the cultures of others. \nFor more information click here.
