SUMMARY:Envir. Film & Speakers Series: Wenatchee Outdoors!
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Wenatchee Outdoors. This event is part of Wenatchee Outdoors Wenatchee Moves campaign\, happening the first two weeks of October.  \nJoin us online along with Sarah Shaffer and the WenOut team on Tuesday\, October 5 at 7 PM\, to watch two short films and have a conversation about the human need for connection with the great outdoors through many avenues including human-powered recreation. The two films that will guide our conversation are\, “The Important Places” by Gnarly Bay and “Unfenced” by Patagonia. Where have you been the closest to nature and noticed how infinitely small we are compared to the great outdoors? What actions can we take to preserve lands that remain undisturbed in our region?  \nABOUT “THE IMPORTANT PLACES” \nIn this heart-warming short film acclaimed photographer Forest Woodward and Brendan Leonard chronicle a father-son journey down the Colorado River. The trip simultaneously illuminates the beauty and fragility of the canyon and of life as Forest grapples with the reality of his rapidly aging father and struggles to find his own path. \nABOUT “UNFENCED” \nThe Red Desert in southwest Wyoming is the largest unfenced area in the continental United States. In order to raise awareness about this threatened ecosystem\, several Wyoming conservation groups have banded together to organize a trail race that brings runners\, local stakeholders\, and concerned citizens together to experience this place and see exactly what is at stake. \nPlease note there is adult content that includes brief nudity and strong language in “The Important Places.” \nREGISTER HERE \nRegister in advance for this webinar. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nThank you to Wenatchee Outdoors for partnering with us on this event. This film is a part of the Wenatchee Valley Museum’s Environmental Film & Speaker Series. Sponsorship support from foundations\, community sponsorships\, and individual giving allows us to offer these programs free to the community. This series helps connect our community to the world around us\, raise awareness of issues impacting the environment upon which we all depend\, and identify actions our community can take to improve and sustain our world and our Valley. \nPlease consider supporting the Wenatchee Valley Museum by joining us as a member and donor. Your support makes possible the programs\, exhibits\, and preservation of our local history that is an essential part of our community. Learn more at: https://www.wenatcheevalleymuseum.org/donate/

SUMMARY:Friends of the Horan Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:October 6 @ 7:30 AM – 10:00 AM \n\n\n\nLocation: Horan Natural Area \nRegistration is not required \nWe are pleased to announce that the NCWAS Friends of Horan monthly bird walks through Walla Walla Point Park and the Horan Natural Area are beginning again after months of pandemic denial. We follow the latest CDC guidelines for Covid protection. If you are vaccinated\, you can participate in these bird walks without using a mask. Carpooling to the parking area is fine if everyone is vaccinated. If you are not vaccinated\, please wear a mask and do not carpool to the parking area. Simple\, right? \nThere is no registration required for these walks. Just show up\, be prepared for the weather and\, walk about 2.5 miles on easy\, gravel trails. Each of the walks begins at 07:30am and ends by 10:00am. It is fine to leave the walk early if you have limited time. The walks begin at the north-most parking lot in Walla Walla Point Park near the restrooms. Parking does not require a Discovery Pass and is free (thank you Chelan PUD). \nEvery walk follows a protocol to visit several sites and the bird sightings are entered into eBird. This ensures that bird use in the Horan area and in Walla Walla Point Park are consistently documented. \nFor more information click here. \nThis event is a part of the Wenatchee Outdoors Wenatchee Moves campaign\, happening the first two weeks of October.

SUMMARY:The Creation of North Cascades National Park (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nClass Tuition: $15 \nLook at a map of the North Cascades and you’ll see a jigsaw puzzle of land designations and labels. How did one of the most remote\, wild regions in the contiguous United States come to be carved up into these disparate pieces? And why is North Cascades National Park among the least visited in the country? \nThe answer is a tale of politics\, passion\, and people. The park jump-started the modern environmental movement in the Pacific Northwest and influenced the wilderness preservation nationally\, forcing federal public lands agencies to change how they managed our national parks and forests. North Cascades is a reminder that national parks are not only scenic landscapes of national significance\, but political entities\, created through negotiation and compromise. \nLauren Danner traces the fascinating narrative of Washington state’s third crown jewel national park. \nFor more information and to register click here.

SUMMARY:Moses Coulee Megafloods-Wenatchee Valley Erratics
DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Erratics\, Ice Age Floods Institute’s next ZOOM program will be on Tuesday\, October 12 at 7:00 PM. Joel Gombiner\, PhD candidate at U. of Washington will discuss “Moses Coulee Megafloods.” \nMoses Coulee is unique from other Scabland canyons because it lacks an obvious tie-in to the Columbia River. It heads in the middle of the Waterville Plateau\, but lacks clear feeder channels or flood-scoured surfaces that link to the Columbia River. How did it get there? How was it formed? And when? \nUsing field observations and laboratory analyses of rocks and minerals transported by the megafloods\, Joel will present new\, unpublished data using megaflood deposits in the Coulee that suggest it formed before the last glaciation\, that it flooded prior to the Grand Coulee during the last glaciation\, and that Lake Missoula was a flood source for at least some\, but not all\, Moses Coulee floods. \n\n\nZOOM link:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86226617396

SUMMARY:Cross Continent Ecosystem Comparisons (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by North Cascades Institute \nClass Tuition: $15 \nVirtual programming has really enabled us to expand our sense of place. People are tuning in from further afield\, and our persectives on our home region are informed by considering other distant ecosystems. Thanks to a fellow environmental educator on the other side of our continent\, we have an opportunity to consider an ecosystem on the Atlantic coast with some intriguing similarities! \nJoin Dr. Sarah Bois\, Director of Research and Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation based on Nantucket Island\, Massachusetts for a discussion about the similarities and differences in habitats\, ecology\, and land use between our two coasts. \nWe’ll explore our cross-continent similarities starting with the geologic history that defines both regions and on through current land ownership and the challenges each region faces. Sarah will use her experiences in conservation on both coasts to look at invasive species\, coastal grassland management and rare species conservation comparing and contrasting the two regions. \nWe’ll highlight what we can learn from each other both in terms of successes and areas in need of improvement. We hope for open discussion and participation from both coasts. \nFor more information and to register click here.

SUMMARY:Beta Hatch-Insect Entrepreneurs
DESCRIPTION:Red Barn Event: Beta Hatch – Insect Entrepreneurs \nThursday\, October 28th 7:00PM-8:30PM @ WRI Red Barn \nJoin us to learn about our valley’s very own mealworm hatchery\, combating our problem of food production and waste! By 2050\, the world will need to feed 10 billion people. Today\, 30% of crops feed meat\, meaning feed production competes with food production. Beta Hatch is industrializing insect agriculture here in the Wenatchee Valley to solve these problems. Mealworms\, we like to say\, are a super bug\, digesting waste that ordinarily has low or no value. Our insect-protein production platform converts mealworms and their waste into high-value proteins\, oils\, and nutrients for agriculture. The opening of our flagship facility in Cashmere\, WA marks the establishment of North America’s largest mealworm hatchery\, producing insect protein and organic insect manure (frass). \nMore information: https://wenatcheeriverinstitute.org/event-calendar.html/event/2021/10/28/red-barn-event-beta-hatch-insect-entrepreneurs/348091

SUMMARY:Diversity in the Outdoors: A Conversation with Chevon Powell (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nClass Tuition: $15 \nThe outdoor scene presents an opportunity for all people to connect with our shared earthly home. However\, the conservation and recreation fields in the U.S. have been disproportionately shaped by white\, able-bodied figures and the trail has not been a welcoming place for diverse people. \nWhile Black\, Indigenous\, and people of color (BIPOC) have always been out on the trail despite this history\, we’re now seeing a welcome increase in participation\, as well as overlapping conversations about social justice and outdoor recreation. More people of diverse identities are getting out\, having fun\, and adding to the richness of outdoor culture. Discussions about diversity in the outdoors help to grow a diverse and just outdoor scene. \nPlease join us in welcoming Chevon Powell to our virtual platform. Chevon is the founder of Golden Bricks Events (GBE) and Refuge Outdoor Festival—an annual outdoor recreation camping experience geared toward Black\, Indigenous\, People of Color. She is an experienced event professional and community advocate for outdoor access and environmental justice. \nChevon will be sharing with us her story of exploring natural and social landscapes\, as well as facilitating a reflective conversation in small groups. \nThis online program offers an opportunity to participate in a thought-provoking and inspiring conversation around building diversity in the outdoors. \nFor more information or to register click here.

SUMMARY:Sagebrush Planting in the Wenatchee Foothills
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wed\, 11/10/2021\n\n\nTime: 12 PM – 3 PM\n\n\nLocation:\nEnd of Maiden Lane\, access to Balsamroot Trail south TH\n\n\n\n\nChelan-Douglas Land Trust invites you to plant over 300 native big sagebrush seedlings in the Wenatchee Foothills\, within the footprint of both the 2012 and 2015 wildfires. The seeds were collected nearby in 2020 by CDLT volunteers.  Derby Canyon Natives in Peshastin grew the seedlings.  The planting area is important mule deer wintering habitat. Our efforts to return woody sagebrush to the habitat will meet mule deer habitat by providing food and cover. The work will be moderately strenuous and will involve walking (carrying plants & tools) about 1/2-mile to access the off-trail hillside site.  To plant\, we’ll be on a slope and will be bending and crouching. CDLT volunteers will be joined a group of high-school aged youth. \nEveryone’s safety is our top priority at these events. Please read CDLT’s COVID Safety Protocol and do not attend the event if you are feeling unwell. Remember to bring a face mask to wear when you’re around other people\, work gloves\, hand sanitizer\, water\, snacks\, layers of clothing appropriate for the task & weather on site\, close-toed shoes. The Land Trust will bring long-tongued “tile spade” shovels for volunteers to use. \nPlease RSVP with the form so we can get an accurate headcount and provide you with details for the work party as the date approaches. \n*All work parties are weather and conditions dependent. Canceled work parties will be rescheduled if possible. \nQuestions? Please email Susan Ballinger\, Conservation Fellow at susan@cdlandtrust.org

SUMMARY:National Park Free Admission Day for Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Day to the National Parks in honor of Veterans Day \nMany national parks have direct connections to the American military—there are dozens of battlefields\, military parks\, and historic sites that commemorate and honor the service of American veterans. In addition\, every national park is part of our collective identity that defines who we are and where we came from as a nation. They are tactile reminders of the values\, the ideals\, and the freedoms that our veterans protect. \nThe majestic landscapes\, natural wonders\, and patriotic icons that we cherish as a society have also inspired military members through the years. The Grand Canyon\, Mount Rushmore\, the USS Arizona Memorial\, and the Statue of Liberty are just a few of the national parks that have served as reminders of home to those stationed abroad. On Veterans Day\, or any day\, honor those who have served and sacrificed for our country with a visit to a national park. \nThe National Park Service invites all visitors to remember our veterans by visiting any National Park Service site for free on Veterans Day (November 11). Find tips to recreate responsibly while you visit!

SUMMARY:Sagebrush Seed Collection near Spiva Butte
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sat\, 11/13/2021 \nTime: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm \nLocation: Spiva Butte \nChelan-Douglas Land Trust and Conservation Northwest invite you to join a Saturday\, Nov. 13\, 2021\, work party to help collect big sagebrush seeds.  We welcome families and volunteers of all ages and abilities\, who will enjoy spending a day in the sagebrush grasslands of rural NE Douglas County where it is usually windy and cold.  The location is 1-1/2 hour drive from Wenatchee\, 2-1/2 hours from Spokane\, and 1-1/2 hour drive from Winthrop. We will meet at 10am (detailed location directions will be provided) and conclude at 2pm. \nOur goal is to collect seedheads to use to replant big sagebrush on CDLT’s Spiva Butte Nature Preserve where the 2020 Pearl Hill Wildfire killed all sagebrush.  Greater Sagegrouse\, Sage Thrashers\, and many other native wildlife depend upon sagebrush for food and habitat. Our goal is to quickly re-seed this shrub on the 1300-acre preserve.  Part of the seeds will be used in nurseries to grow seedlings. Most will be used in late fall\, distributed by a field crew who will fling seedheads within the preserve to simulate natural wind-blown dispersal.  CDLT conducted a pilot flinging project in 2020 and the positive results show the effectiveness of this novel method. \nParking is along a well-maintained county gravel road. Volunteers will walk cross country on uneven flat ground for up to 1-mile.  Volunteers will be within sight of parked vehicles\, so extra clothes\, food\, and water can be left in vehicles for easy access.   Volunteers will use hand clippers or scissors to cut seedheads and place them into a lightweight bag\, tucked into a belt. We’ll supply some sweet treats and raffle off 4 gas cards. \nPlease RSVP by filling out the form so we can provide you with details for the work party as the date approaches. \n*All work parties are weather and conditions dependent. Canceled work parties will be rescheduled if possible. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Susan Ballinger (susan@cdlandtrust.org) or Keith Watson (keith@conservationnw.org).
