People are tuning in from further afield\, and our persectives on our home region are informed by considering other distant ecosystems. Thanks to a fellow environmental educator on the other side of our continent\, we have an opportunity to consider an ecosystem on the Atlantic coast with some intriguing similarities! \nJoin Dr. Sarah Bois\, Director of Research and Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation based on Nantucket Island\, Massachusetts for a discussion about the similarities and differences in habitats\, ecology\, and land use between our two coasts. \nWe’ll explore our cross-continent similarities starting with the geologic history that defines both regions and on through current land ownership and the challenges each region faces. Sarah will use her experiences in conservation on both coasts to look at invasive species\, coastal grassland management and rare species conservation comparing and contrasting the two regions. \nWe’ll highlight what we can learn from each other both in terms of successes and areas in need of improvement. Mealworms\, we like to say\, are a super bug\, digesting waste that ordinarily has low or no value. Our insect-protein production platform converts mealworms and their waste into high-value proteins\, oils\, and nutrients for agriculture. However\, the conservation and recreation fields in the U.S. have been disproportionately shaped by white\, able-bodied figures and the trail has not been a welcoming place for diverse people. \nWhile Black\, Indigenous\, and people of color (BIPOC) have always been out on the trail despite this history\, we’re now seeing a welcome increase in participation\, as well as overlapping conversations about social justice and outdoor recreation. More people of diverse identities are getting out\, having fun\, and adding to the richness of outdoor culture. DESCRIPTION:Date: Wed\, 11/10/2021\n\n\nTime: 12 PM – 3 PM\n\n\nLocation:\nEnd of Maiden Lane\, access to Balsamroot Trail south TH\n\n\n\n\nChelan-Douglas Land Trust invites you to plant over 300 native big sagebrush seedlings in the Wenatchee Foothills\, within the footprint of both the 2012 and 2015 wildfires. The seeds were collected nearby in 2020 by CDLT volunteers.  Derby Canyon Natives in Peshastin grew the seedlings.  The planting area is important mule deer wintering habitat. Our efforts to return woody sagebrush to the habitat will meet mule deer habitat by providing food and cover. The work will be moderately strenuous and will involve walking (carrying plants & tools) about 1/2-mile to access the off-trail hillside site.  To plant\, we’ll be on a slope and will be bending and crouching. CDLT volunteers will be joined a group of high-school aged youth. \nEveryone’s safety is our top priority at these events. Please read CDLT’s COVID Safety Protocol and do not attend the event if you are feeling unwell. Remember to bring a face mask to wear when you’re around other people\, work gloves\, hand sanitizer\, water\, snacks\, layers of clothing appropriate for the task & weather on site\, close-toed shoes. The Land Trust will bring long-tongued “tile spade” shovels for volunteers to use. \nPlease RSVP with the form so we can get an accurate headcount and provide you with details for the work party as the date approaches. \n*All work parties are weather and conditions dependent. DESCRIPTION:Date: Sat\, 11/13/2021 \nTime: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm \nLocation: Spiva Butte \nChelan-Douglas Land Trust and Conservation Northwest invite you to join a Saturday\, Nov. 13\, 2021\, work party to help collect big sagebrush seeds.  We welcome families and volunteers of all ages and abilities\, who will enjoy spending a day in the sagebrush grasslands of rural NE Douglas County where it is usually windy and cold.  The location is 1-1/2 hour drive from Wenatchee\, 2-1/2 hours from Spokane\, and 1-1/2 hour drive from Winthrop. We will meet at 10am (detailed location directions will be provided) and conclude at 2pm. \nOur goal is to collect seedheads to use to replant big sagebrush on CDLT’s Spiva Butte Nature Preserve where the 2020 Pearl Hill Wildfire killed all sagebrush.  Greater Sagegrouse\, Sage Thrashers\, and many other native wildlife depend upon sagebrush for food and habitat. Our goal is to quickly re-seed this shrub on the 1300-acre preserve.  Part of the seeds will be used in nurseries to grow seedlings. Most will be used in late fall\, distributed by a field crew who will fling seedheads within the preserve to simulate natural wind-blown dispersal.  CDLT conducted a pilot flinging project in 2020 and the positive results show the effectiveness of this novel method. \nParking is along a well-maintained county gravel road. Volunteers will walk cross country on uneven flat ground for up to 1-mile.  Volunteers will be within sight of parked vehicles\, so extra clothes\, food\, and water can be left in vehicles for easy access.   Volunteers will use hand clippers or scissors to cut seedheads and place them into a lightweight bag\, tucked into a belt. \nEveryone’s safety is our top priority at these events. Please read CDLT’s COVID Safety Protocol and do not attend the event if you are feeling unwell. Remember to bring a face mask to wear when you’re around other people\, work gloves\, hand sanitizer\, water\, snacks\, layers of clothing appropriate for the task & weather on site\, close-toed shoes.  We’ll supply some sweet treats and raffle off 4 gas cards. \nPlease RSVP by filling out the form so we can provide you with details for the work party as the date approaches. \n*All work parties are weather and conditions dependent. The Approach combines all kinds of skiing and riding in gorgeous locations throughout the west\, and gives a glimpse into the wide variety of narratives behind why riding is important to each athlete\, and their approach to the mountains and life. The Approach is directed\, filmed and edited by Anne Cleary\, with additional film and production work by Sofia Jaramillo\, Jeff Keenan\, and Leanne Pelosi\, and produced by Ingrid Backstrom and Mad Trees. Featured riders include: Emilé Zynobia\, Leanne Pelosi\, Brooklyn Bell\, Vasu Sojitra\, Ingrid Backstrom\, Anna Soens\, Sophia Rouches\, and more. \nIngrid Backstrom has been skiing professionally for 16 years and has appeared in over 20 ski films including Warren Miller\, Sherpas Cinema\, and Matchstick Productions. She has been fortunate to make first descents of mountains in China\, Greenland\, and Baffin Island\, as well as skiing in Pakistan\, Greenland\, and from the summit of Denali. She lives with her husband\, two kids\, and a dog in Leavenworth\, Washington. \nDoors open at 6:30pm for community social with local beer and wine available for purchase. SUMMARY:Paleoseismic History & Hazards of the Wallula Fault Zone
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee Valley Erratics Zoom Program \nWhen: December 14\, 2021 at 7:00PM\, when Stephen J. Angster\, Research Scientist with the USGS Earthquake Science Center\, Seattle Field Office\, will present: \n“Paleoseismic history and hazards associated with the Wallula fault zone: A new look at clastic dike features in southeast Washington” \nIn an effort to better understand seismic hazards within the Tri-cities region of SE Washington and NE Oregon\, the USGS is leading an effort to characterize the paleoseismic and rupture history along the Wallula fault zone. In this talk\, Steve will share recent field observations and new geochronologic data collected from a paleoseismic trench and roadcut exposure that display Holocene age liquefaction features (e.g. clastic dikes). These features appear within late Pleistocene slackwater deposits of the Missoula Floods (aka. Touchet Beds); and cap Holocene loess. Stratigraphic and sedimentologic relationships along with luminesces ages of the liquefied sediment suggest up to four seismically-induced liquefaction events during the Holocene\, any of which were likely triggered by earthquakes sourced from either the Wallula fault zone and/or faults of the Yakima fold and thrust belt. Additional observations and analysis along a newly discovered late Holocene scarp indicate that the scarp is most-likely tectonic in origin and plausibly the surface rupture trace of the 1936 Milton-Freewater earthquake. \nHere’s our Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82730527571 Sign in at 7:00 PM\, Tuesday December 14.
