DESCRIPTION:Red Barn Event: The Approach with Ingrid Backstrom \nRed Barn @ 347 Division Street\, Leavenworth \nJoin Leavenworth local and professional skier\, Ingrid Backstrom\, to view the film\, The Approach\, and talk about it’s creation. \nThe Approach film is an action-driven ski and snowboard film elevating women\, adaptive skiers\, and people of color. The Approach combines all kinds of skiing and riding in gorgeous locations throughout the west\, and gives a glimpse into the wide variety of narratives behind why riding is important to each athlete\, and their approach to the mountains and life. The Approach is directed\, filmed and edited by Anne Cleary\, with additional film and production work by Sofia Jaramillo\, Jeff Keenan\, and Leanne Pelosi\, and produced by Ingrid Backstrom and Mad Trees. Featured riders include: Emilé Zynobia\, Leanne Pelosi\, Brooklyn Bell\, Vasu Sojitra\, Ingrid Backstrom\, Anna Soens\, Sophia Rouches\, and more. \nIngrid Backstrom has been skiing professionally for 16 years and has appeared in over 20 ski films including Warren Miller\, Sherpas Cinema\, and Matchstick Productions. She has been fortunate to make first descents of mountains in China\, Greenland\, and Baffin Island\, as well as skiing in Pakistan\, Greenland\, and from the summit of Denali. She lives with her husband\, two kids\, and a dog in Leavenworth\, Washington. \nDoors open at 6:30pm for community social with local beer and wine available for purchase. The presentation begins at 7:00pm.\nFree event with a donation basket at door. \nSince these events are now indoors in close quarters\, only people who are vaccinated for COVID-19 (regardless of eligibility) may attend. SUMMARY:Paleoseismic History & Hazards of the Wallula Fault Zone
DESCRIPTION:Wenatchee Valley Erratics Zoom Program \nWhen: December 14\, 2021 at 7:00PM\, when Stephen J. Angster\, Research Scientist with the USGS Earthquake Science Center\, Seattle Field Office\, will present: \n“Paleoseismic history and hazards associated with the Wallula fault zone: A new look at clastic dike features in southeast Washington” \nIn an effort to better understand seismic hazards within the Tri-cities region of SE Washington and NE Oregon\, the USGS is leading an effort to characterize the paleoseismic and rupture history along the Wallula fault zone. In this talk\, Steve will share recent field observations and new geochronologic data collected from a paleoseismic trench and roadcut exposure that display Holocene age liquefaction features (e.g. clastic dikes). These features appear within late Pleistocene slackwater deposits of the Missoula Floods (aka. Touchet Beds); and cap Holocene loess. Stratigraphic and sedimentologic relationships along with luminesces ages of the liquefied sediment suggest up to four seismically-induced liquefaction events during the Holocene\, any of which were likely triggered by earthquakes sourced from either the Wallula fault zone and/or faults of the Yakima fold and thrust belt. Additional observations and analysis along a newly discovered late Holocene scarp indicate that the scarp is most-likely tectonic in origin and plausibly the surface rupture trace of the 1936 Milton-Freewater earthquake. \nHere’s our Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82730527571 Sign in at 7:00 PM\, Tuesday December 14.

DESCRIPTION:Lake Wenatchee State Park- Leavenworth\, WA\nJanuary 1st\, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nKick off the New Year with a FIRST DAY HIKE! Join volunteers and park staff for a brisk 1.3 mile snowshoe hike around our frosty winter wonderland as we ring in the New Year in the great outdoors! This is a fantastic hike for first-timers in snowshoes or adults with children. The hike is easy with varying views\, plenty of opportunities for snowball fights and memorable photos! A limited number of snowshoes are available to rent\, please call ahead to reserve a pair. \nFollowing the hike\, hot cocoa\, and light snacks will be available for participants in the North Reservation Booth. \nMeet at the North Reservation Booth. We will hike down to the river\, gently proceed upriver to the North Beach\, and then along the shore and back into the woods. Options to lengthen your hike are available via the “Water Works” trail\, once we depart from the North Beach. We suggest taking a snack break and a group photo here! Western Ave. \nWhat: Highland Wonders; Okanogan Ice Islands: Nunataks\, with George Thornton \nDescription: \nHigh\, craggy peaks rise to the West of the Okanogan. These mountains are home to unique plant communities\, and our glacial history holds a clue as to why and how those plants come to live where they do. The changing climate endangers these indicators of our glacial past. In this edition of Highland Wonders\, we will discuss various theories about local natural history and ecology using Chopaka Mountain as a primary example of several nearby Eastern Cascade peaks. \nJoin OHA and George Thornton\, high school teacher\, botanist\, and lifelong nature enthusiast\, at the Tonasket CCC on January 7\, 2022. George has lived his entire life in the Okanogan. SUMMARY:Prospector Antoine Etienne and the Flora of Etienne Creek
DESCRIPTION:Washington Native Plant Society Wenatchee Valley Chapter Presents: Prospector Antoine Etienne and the Flora of Etienne Creek \nThis is a zoom event. \nProgram Description \nIn 1860\, a black prospector named Antoine Etienne mined for gold in Peshastin Creek and the creek that now bears his name.  Reports claim that he found $1\,100 worth of gold\, which would be worth over $100\,000 today.  Who was Antoine Etienne?  In this presentation we will explore what we know about this fascinating Washington pioneer\, and trace his travels from Oregon City\, to the Wenatchee Valley and Entiat\, and then to Prosser.  We will also look at the area’s mining history and how Etienne Creek was renamed in 2009.  And of course we will learn about the flora!  In 2010\, Julia Bent and WNPS Fellow Don Knoke compiled a plant list which is now up to 210 species\, and as you will hear\, there is still lots to discover.  Etienne Creek was the destination for two chapter field trips last year.  Don Schaechtel will walk us through the mining history and flora of this local gem. \nPresenter Bio \nDon Schaechtel lives in Leavenworth and is a past president of both the Washington Native Plant Society and the Wenatchee Valley chapter of the WNPS.  Last year\, Don took an interest in the life of pioneer Antoine Etienne.  He discovered a fascinating story\, which he will share with us. \nYou can register in advance for this presentation here: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_mjMdijduS2G7-xkw7iFkpQ
