SUMMARY:New Old Way: Reflections on Health Habitat Connection
DESCRIPTION:New Old Way: Reflections on the health-habitat connection\, Frank Forencich \nJoin community and friends in the Wenatchee River Institute’s Red Barn on Wednesday\, June 19 for author and movement teacher Frank Forencich’s presentation and slide show New Old Way: Reflections on the health-habitat connection. Forencich will guide us in exploring the nature of the human-habitat connection. Doors will open at 6:30pm for community social and no-host refreshments\, with the presentation beginning at 7pm. \nIn conversations about health\, Forencich recognizes that most of our attention is focused on diet\, exercise and more recently\, stress. He wants us to understand\, however\, that the natural world is an essential part of our physical\, mental and spiritual function and that if we neglect this element\, or worse\, destroy our natural surroundings\, we would greatly compromise our health\, our future\, and even our sanity. In New Old Way\, Forencich will share research and ideas that reveal the deep and essential unity of body and habitat\, and suggest some ways we can all do better. \nForencich has worked at the intersection of health\, biology\, ecology and athletics for over 30 years. As a speaker and movement teacher\, he brings a unique perspective to the human predicament and offers practical solutions for some of the most pressing problems of our age. Forencich is known to be a superb public speaker –articulate\, knowledgeable\, and passionate in his presentations. He has an enlightening and entertaining interactive style that captivates audiences\, offering unique and practical advice. \n“Frank Forencich’s engaging and passionate call to action strives to awaken inspiration\, awareness and contagious hope within each of us. It takes bold steps towards shaping a much-needed narrative as we embark on this journey to unlock our personal and planetary potential\,” Susan Prescott MD\, author of The Secret Life of Your Microbiome. \nEarning a BA in Human Biology from Stanford University\, Forencich is the author of several books relating to health and the human predicament including Exuberant Animal\, Beautiful Practice\, New Old Way\, and The Exuberant Animal Experience: Teacher’s Guide to Philosophy\, physicality and rapport. He is a member of Council of Directors of the True Health Initiative\, holds black belt ranks in karate and aikido\, and was a contributor to Paleo Magazine\, 2012-2016. \nAdmission is by donation to help keep WRI Red Barn Speaker Events on the calendar! SUMMARY:On the Hunt for the Humble Bumble Bee
DESCRIPTION:June 22: On the hunt for the humble bumble bee – learn new skills to make your summertime hikes buzzworthy \nOkanogan Highlands Alliance and Xerces Society Offer Bumble Bee Field Trip \nLocation: Okanogan Highlands \nOn June 22\, 2019\, community members have an opportunity to learn about the bumble bee species in our area\, their importance to our ecosystems\, as well as ways we can help conserve them. In an effort to learn more about bumble bees to improve evidence-based bumble bee conservation guidance\, the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation\, in partnership with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife\, Idaho Department of Fish and Game\, and the Oregon Bee Project\, has launched the Pacific Northwest Bumble Bee Atlas. On a hike in the Okanogan Highlands\, Rich Hatfield\, Xerces Society conservation biologist\, will share information about the Atlas Project\, how to participate\, and the value that the project will have to our area\, both locally\, and more regionally. The group will conduct a point survey at Lost Lake to help determine the number of bumble bee species living there. \nThis field trip will connect the community with our native bumble bees and other pollinators and the contributions they make. The event will provide inspiration and a user-friendly method of getting involved in citizen science to make positive strides toward effective conservation. \nRich Hatfield is a Senior Conservation Biologist with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. The Xerces Society\, founded in 1971\, is a non-profit environmental organization that focuses on the conservation of wildlife\, through the protection of invertebrates and their habitat. Rich is a leader in bumble bee conservation\, with a demonstrated history of effectively using science\, advocacy\, and citizen science to protect wildlife species and their habitat. Rich has a Master’s degree in Conservation Biology from San Francisco State University. He has special knowledge of our region’s species and issues due to his ongoing involvement in the Sinlahekin Wildlife Area in Okanogan County. \nThis event is provided free of charge to the community in partnership with Humanities Washington\, and with support from Bob Raymer’s Machine Works. \nDue to the nature of the outdoor event\, participation is limited\, and priority registration has been offered for OHA members. The general public can now register\, and once the event is full\, a waiting list will be generated on a first-come\, first-serve basis. To begin or renew OHA membership and be first in line to register for the summertime events\, community members can donate online\, or contact OHA for more information. Further details will be provided to those who register for the field trip. \nTo sign up for this event\, please email julie@okanoganhighlands.org or call 509-476-2432. \n
